NY chicken lover!!!!

Nasty stinkin rain today. Windy and wet.

Mowed the back chicken yard and birds don't even have enough sense to run when the mower turns on. All under my feet. They are just too comfortable when I'm around.

While I can't pick them up they have no problem coming for corn. Even the chicks in the coop have learned who it is that feeds them.

I do need some advice on how to keep the mother hen from scratching and knocking over the water dish though. Stupid bird. I have to stand there and shoo her away while the little bits drink.

I use big flat horse feed tubs. they don't knock over, but they do get debris in it.

Well the power is out here! 400+ in my area without it. The ducklings have no lamp, ugh! And I just took them out the tub too! That's their place to play while I clean their brooder. The minute I placed them back in their brooder the lamp went out with the rest of the house. Supposed to be back by 2, we shall see....

Rancher I use large rocks as well now. I was getting tired of seeing the red dish filled with everything but water so I removed the dish, turned the bucket opened end up, filled it with water, placed a couple of rocks in. Works great! Keeps the water from getting dirty with pine chips and poops and keeps the chicks from drowning if they happen to fall in.

Syracuse, NY. Chickens sometimes allowed. Depends on zoning. No roosters.

The City Chicken Law page.

I searched and searched but could fine nothing in zoning or code sites that specifically says no chickens.

I did find a site about "planning" and that mentioned legalizing bees and chickens with licensing.

I will search again and see if I can't find something regarding chickens in the city, but so far can find nothing I can print out that is specific.

I put a heavy rock in every water dish. I also got tired of the spilling. That stops it

My momma was doing the same thing. Water & food....................... finally I took the chicks from her & put them in a brooder. No more mess !! & Momma is back with the flock.

I let momma keep them for 10 days, I think that was a BIG mistake, they are skittish, wild little creatures. They've been in the house in the brooder for 2 days now and seem to be getting a bit better with being handled.

It never occurred to me to use something else for water other than the metal chick waterer. I'd prefer to leave them where they are as I have two brooders, a crate and pool with chicks. I figure between all that and broody hens I've got over 20.

I expect someone to come thurs for three del roosters. I can't incorporate the new BM roo into the coop as there are four hens sitting on eggs. One has a chick but she's reluctant to leave her unhatched eggs. If they each hatch one chick I will pull all other eggs.

Hello again, fellow NY'ers. I'm trying to figure out who's who with the chicks I hatched during the Easter Hatch-a-long.
So, if any of you would be so kind as to take a look, that would be great!

Rancher,
For the momma hens with their chicks, I use a nipple water inside the chicken tractor and outside is a 1 gal plastic water and several black round rubber dishes used for horses, cows, etc. I'll have to remember the rock trick, as I didn't want any to drown in the deep water dishes. But, I overlooked the duck's kiddie pool and two chicks tried to swim - one made out alive and the other didn't. Now, I have cinder blocks in there, so hopefully if anyone tries again, they'll have a way out. I tried fencing it in, with a small opening for the ducks, but the chicks still found their way in and were more likely to fall in that when it wasn't fenced in.

I did copy and print it. I can follow directions!Q Thank you!!

Will this work on a mac as well?
I honestly don't know anything about macs. I haven't touched one in about 16 years I think if not longer. Closest thing I come to is ipad and it's different. I pad runs on the mobile site and don't do it the same. When I try the ipad on the desktop website it wont even let me pick an image from the ipad it just wants a url.

Ipad click the image button. A window comes up says embed and image. This window you have the option to click uplaode from my device ----or------ from a url. I click my device. Then it gives the option of take photo or choose existing. I clicke choose existing. then it let me pick picture I want I don't see a way to do multi pics on ipad beside opening the load screen but when I do that it wont load them all when I hit submit at the end of my post.

sorry not much help with macs.
