NY chicken lover!!!!

I'm ready for more of that sunny warm weather. Bella is exhausted from the thunderstorms, and even her Thundershirt is not as comforting as it was. And who knows what time it is all the clocks say something different if they're not blinking. But through it all, one of the BRs, three of whom are named Gabby, is being broody. She is very accommodating to the others, and gets out of the box to allow the hens to lay more eggs in her box. Sometimes she forgets where her eggs are and I'll find her in a different box with wooden eggs. So I just put her back where she belongs. Sometimes there is a different hen sitting on the eggs. Since I can't really tell one of the Gabbys from another, it's all very strange. If I hadn't marked the eggs and removed the new ones, she would have about 20 eggs. I have left 7 for her. All this is after I had bought more chicks than I should have. Well, there is that thing about counting chicks, so we'll see.

I have a chick!! LOL.. I have eggs in the bator ready to give just a few chicks out to my NINE broodies to get them off the nests but I did throw a few eggs (literally a few) under the ones that had been broody longest.. Yesterday morning saw two broodies in one nest and lo and behold they had hatched a chick even after the rotten egg disaster a few days ago. Came home last night and couldn't find the chick- seems one mama made off with it and had already moved it to a floor nest box..

Oh, and my LEGHORN is still broody!! ROFL. I guess she's going to get chicks next week when they hatch from the bator - I know they aren't supposed to go broody but she's a rebel..

Aw haha well some girls are just meant to be mothers!

I hope Bella feels better soon I thought I heard that the weather was suppose to subside for a bit but in general its going to be a rough summer for storms for all of us on the east cost and even a few category 3 hurricanes. UGH Good luck with your broody girl.

Good morning all I'm hoping that this weather will subside for a few days I got some time off after Saturday and I really want to get a lot of work done in my garden and chicken coop. Plus we are getting another dog and I want to access behaviors and get potty training and socializing.

The wandering eggs are starting to hatch. One chick so far. I am surprised ANY hatched after the number of times I moved them from nest to nest as more eggs came into my life. This is the second time in a row this hen has sat on a clutch of eggs. First clutch not one single egg hatched. I pulled them after 26 days and gave her eggs from under the broody twins, thereby making room for the duck eggs. Then I added 2 from under my D'uccle when I got the Brahma eggs. (The D'uccle got some of those. She's a proven broody and good momma) I hope this hen turns out to be a good momma, cuz she sure has earned her chick(s). Next week the duck and brahma eggs hatch. I am going to have to move that group to a more secure place. I just can't see the rest of the flock leaving 15+ new chicks/ducklings alone. Nor can I see the mommas being able to fend off the entire flock and protect that many birds. (Space is to crowded as it is, 15 more will really stress them out.) I think I will wait till the night before the first eggs are supposed to hatch and move them at night to the small side of the coop, big wooden box and all and move the 3 non-broody birds from that side to the big side.

more hatching today and in a few days. 5 broody's had their hatches and many more nearly ready. Plus more just sat . Mid 20's in new confirmed chicks so far this year. All from broody's

That is awesome, how is everyone handling all this rain? looks like they are just fine though! My girls don't give a poop the messier the better LOL.

Well after 2 hours of sleep wife wakes me up in a panic that the coop is wet. Guess the one window I wasn't worried about let in more rain than I wanted roosts was wet and the ground under was wet. Took DE to it all then went and got my spare bag of shaveings dumped them all over went. I mixed it all up and it wasn't as wet as I thought only part of floor that was wet at all was under food where it was scraped to bare floor. Hammered some wood over the window for now. Looks like I got some work to do this weekend. Been meaning to do some shutters or old style window coverings like my mother inlaws house has but been picking up too much over time to do anything with chickens this past week and half.

well back to bed

Rancher---the humidity causes me to overheat easily. I have trouble keeping my body temp down when it is hot or humid. Feels like my blood is literally boiling in my veins. My dad was the same way. AC and/or a cool dip in the lake or a shower is the only way I can get it back down. Sounds like those broodies are giving you a run for your money! Good luck with them and their hatch!

Well depending on how things turn out if you were closer you could take home some chicks.

Hope this weather helps you to feel better. DW and I are on the opposite ends of the scale. She's too hot and I keep hoping for one of her hot flashes so I can sidle up next to her and get warm up.

Morning All,
We had quite the drop in temperature last night. Had the AC on upstairs for the kids and in our bedroom, woke up this morning and it was colder in my kitchen/living room than it was in the bedrooms with the AC on! Got worried about the ducklings since they've been in their coop without a heat lamp, they seem to be doing just fine.

Stony great pics (as always

Glad to hear of everyone's hatches! I think I'm going to try making my own incubator and see if I can hatch out some of these silkie eggs. My son has been wanting to do an "experiment" and this will be one indeed! LOL

I went out to close up the coop, had a look around and one of my red sexlinks was dead under the coop...I have NO idea what happened. I looked over over and there were no visible signs of injury, just a bunch of feathers scattered around. I think she got into it with the roo and maybe broke her neck? She was very healthy otherwise (at least visibly) and she was acting fine....ugh what do you guys do with the bodies of your birds?
