NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning Everyone,
We're back from Boston. Everyone did well while we were away. Candled my 6 eggs this morning and they are doing well! Lots of visable veins for being only Day 4! And they were ALL fertile and all are growing!!

Let the big chickens out today for the first time in a week! I'm sure they are thrilled. Came home to three more eggs. I'm assuming 2 from Saturday and 1 from Sunday or vise versa and no eggs yet today since they were all cold. Plus I was out there pretty early at 8 and they usually haven't that early in the past. Today will be the test to see if they go back to the nestbox to lay. I'm sure they will and that wasn't the problem before I cooped them up. Just glad to be getting some eggs again!!!

FIL is out of surgery already. They found 3 pinhead sized tumors which they removed. They also did a biopsy of the red spot on the bladder wall to see if it is cancerous, if so, what type. We should know in 3 days. Then figure out from there what to do. So, at least so far, they haven't needed to remove the bladder at all. Phew!

JLaw, did you pull eggs from the fridge to hatch? I'd always read that once they are cooled in the fridge they are no longer hatchable. Maybe I'm wrong?

FIL is having surgery today. He has been battling bladder cancer for awhile and has had pollups (sp?) that they have been treating with fluid chemo that they put directly into his bladder. They found a spot on the wall of his bladder now. They are going in more for exploratory surgery, but will remove what they need to from his bladder. Hopefully they will not need to remove the entire thing, as this is a man who will NOT do well with a bag the rest of his life. He should be headed to surgery soon.

You can hatch from fridge but depending on temp and how long in it can kill the cells and they wont hatch. Mine have been in a few days I let them sit out in egg turner on desk over night and just now put them in the bator at noon. I have 40 of my own eggs in there so as long as none of these other roos mounted my girls i'll have some ee's. my wife and son are happy that I have them in the bator because now they can go back to eating the eggs lol. I don't think most will hatch wife says if even 50% hatch i'm a dead man. We average like 4-5 eggs a day so the oldest eggs are like 7-8 days old mainly the ones from fridge.

I hope everything goes alright with fil.

Well my hen with spurs laid her first egg right next to me the other day! Funny that it is still exciting to get that first egg from the new layers.

Congrats to everyone else with first eggs!

This is Ollie the up and coming Roo. He's turning into a real sweetie. I might just have to keep him...

The two in front are the 2 chicks I broke down and got from Natureberry a month ago.
The one in front is an EE and the one in the middle is the Speckled Sussex. Can't wait to bring them home!

Chickprincess I hope your FIL is doing ok, I will send positive thoughts your way!

Just real quick. If you're not to far from Cortland, Halls had an ad in the thursday paper for buy two lbs. get one free on their blue berries. Ad says they're $1.50 a lb. Might be worth the drive if you have a freezer or can.

Have some nice recipes for blueberries plus other fruits if you're interested. Did Blue/rasp and Sweet cherry blue both really good.

Forgot to say, I take my measuring cup and scale with me when I go to pick berries. Also my recipes so I know how much I need for each. Then when I get home I clean and bag them marked with how much and what recipe they are for.

EX. 2 cps for Blue/Rasp or 3 cps for Blue/SwtCherry This way I just pull the bags I need for whatever jam I'm making.

Chick - I hope Fil is well!
Lynzi - I'm glad your getting eggs again.

Rancher, I wish I lived close enough to cortland I'd so be there!

Jlaw - good luck with the hatch keep me posted on things I'm learning from you of you Lynzi as well.

Sunny - Congrats we are super excited everytime a new bird lays an egg.

Well had a killer 5 mile run with the dogs while my son skateboarded with the yorkie. I should do crunches, leg lifts, arm work, and so on as well to my work but I won't to much fun stuff to do with my son.
Our girls are doing great and the cats are lazy half *** swatting at flies as though it's too much work, my male is laying on the princess bed, yeah makes sense. Going to do some work on the coop and garden, and the fun part pay bills LOL. Have a good one.

Earl and the girls were being very noisy, so I went out the back door to see who was doing what to whom. A large mottled coyote trotted away from the back of the pen. Could be he knows something about those 6 missing youngsters. Think I'll go brush hog behind there to make a larger area without cover...

Pharm -- Neat pics.

Nutty-- Did your DD start losing her plug nearly 2 months early? Just thought I'd ask because I am. I have a doctor's appointment Wednesday. My aunt who is a nurse told me to drink more water and juice and try to not do as much.

Sunny, Yay! on the first egg.

Here's an easy recipe I got on FB a couple weeks ago. Easy and SO GOOD!

Broccoli Quiche (low carb but not low fat)

10 oz frozen chopped broccoli, cooked and well drained
8 oz cheddar cheese, shredded
2 oz onion, chopped, about 1/3 cup
6 eggs (I used up 8 small eggs)
1 cup heavy cream
salt and pepper to taste

Spray a large glass pie plate with cooking spray. Put the broccoli, onion and cheese in the bottom of the plate, spread out. Beat the eggs, then whisk in the cream, salt and pepper. Pour evenly over the cheese mixture. At this point, I used a spoon to push all the broccoli down a bit. Bake at 350 for 35 to 45 minutes, until a knife inserted in center comes out clean. Let stand 10 minutes before cutting.
Makes 6 servings. Can be frozen.

I've been getting a great crop from my blueberry bushes this year. I have 3 bushes that are 5 yrs old, 3 that are 3 yrs old and 4 that are from this spring. By the time they all produce berries, I'll be drowning in berries. The raspberries didn't do anything for the 2nd yr in a row. I guess I need to mow them down like I've read. The blackberries did great but they aren't the kind I wanted. They look more like black caps and aren't very sweet. I want the kind that resembles my thumb, lol. I'm pulling them all up and putting the ones I want in. Sometimes the labeling at the nurseries is wrong. I bought Iris that weren't the right color and clematis, the same. There is supposed to be a nice nursery up around Canadaigua Lake, can't think of the name. I might try there.
I'm going to try to make jam with Blueberries and orange and try to replicate the jam we bought while visiting along the Maine coast. It was soooo good. Rancher, I'd love to try some of your blueberry recipes. I also bag them in certain qty's and label what there for. So easy later on.
