NY chicken lover!!!!

Everyone's birds look beautiful.

Sorry Rancher I can't take a roo off your hands my neighbors would kill me. Though I'm not sure how they would know when they leave the music blasting 24/7 LOL

Lynzi i hope the ducks work out for you.

Thanks sunny I love the afro on Rhea too I tried to get a better pick of her cheek tuffs as well. She is a beautiful brabanter I'm surprised because her sister didn't fill out or grow and passed some time ago.

Nutty thanks I will try that where do you get the square buckets from?

I'm Want my Crazy sunflowers to bloom they are so close I feel like they are going to stop on me LOL There were planted early April before that nasty snow storm hit LOL but they are tough!

I live in Rochester does anyone know of a good butcher that I could buy 1/2 a cow or a whole one if that is how it's done? I don't remember the breed but my dad got us one that we picked out years ago and they had dreadlock looking hair. I was so scared when I walked in cuz the bulls were so aggressive and ramming the stalls but I finely picked one.
My parents got 1/2 a cow last year from a family in Newark. It was delicious! I'll ask if they still have their name. You can also go on localharvest.org and find someone near you or call around for the breed you are looking for.

He's looking for a new home

LOL, at the moment I have 2:8 Roos to hens....if you had caught me a month ago I would have been able to say yes.

I'll try to post pic tomorrow of the Aracaunas. How big are your EE girls ? I'm looking for colored ( blue / green ) egg layers or a pure Am roo, so I can produce my own EE's

Why are you getting rid of the Lav Am ???

I'll post pics of my blue barred pullets & roo. There is no mistaking the boys from the girls and the blues from the reg black barring. If they are pullets for sure I'll take them back, no problem. I do have 1 reg barred rock roo left from that hatch. I'll post a pic of him too.

I think everybody is in the same boat with the roosters ! I hatched 2-3 roos to every hen. There will be ALOT of boys going to freezer camp this fall, at my house

IF anyone is interested, I have : Several Speckled Sussex roos, 2 Golden Cuckoo Maran roos, 1 Iowa Blue mix roo, 1 Blue barred rock & 1 reg Barred rock roos, 1 Brabanter roo, & 3 Aracauna roos. I also have a boat load of BLRW roos, but I'm growing them out till the fall so I can pick 2 for breeding. I also have a boatload of Black Australorp roos, same thing, i'll be growing them out to pick my breeders

I keep other pure breeds, but for colored eggs I don't mind the cross to an EE. I've some of his daughters. So in order to not keep a shallow gene pool of EE's I'd thought I switch out the rooster.

He's not aggressive and nice. Though like many of my roosters I don't hold him and baby him. I got him from Chickenstalker in PA. He's at least three.

I've been growing out my BM roos and have picked the one I'm going to keep. He's nicer than his father, who I will keep til spring when I hatch more of his off spring. Seems for every hatch half are roosters. I've got two chicks now. One is a roo and I'm not sure I'll keep them.

Morning all.
Nutty, hope he gets to drinking soon.
Sunny, my FIL did the same thing years ago, MIL took his bike away and sold it :-( Hope he gets better.
Miquwid, we've tried growing sunflowers here for 7 years now and they just never make it. It's a bummer too since they're my wife's fav flower.
I'm not sure about the caponing thing. I know it's supposed to make them taste better and not be as tough but we usually try to whack our roo's when they're still young. Seems like a lot of trouble and if you do it wrong, the bird is dead anyway.
I'm in the same boat with roo's here but mine are all bantams. I think I counted 6 lav cochins yesterday that will need to go at some point. There's a couple mottled, and a couple blue too. I think I only have 1 or 2 frizzle boys. I know for sure I have 3 Barnevelder boys but they get to stay here until at least next year
Cracrzy4chicks I might be interested in a BLRW for a blue barnie project, I don't think you're too far away, maybe a hour.
Rancher I know all too well about the drainage on the creek. If we dig a hole more than a couple feet deep we hit water. I think it's pretty crappy of your neighbors to drain their washer like that. The only thing my neighbor and I drain into the creek is overflow from our artesian wells. Clean fresh water.
Lynzi good luck with the ducks today. I'll be waiting for some pictures.

Chris

I think it drains into the side of their yard, but eventually everything ends up in the creek. I don't complain because eventually the house will fall in. Then they're going to have to move and the house torn down and no neighbors on that side anymore. The landlord doesn't take care of things at all. It needs alot of work and I suspect is not up to code. I don't want to be the one to call the authorities. They might just put some more band aides on the place.

On the other hand I suppose them being there keeps some of the wild life away.

Morning everyone

I did 14 quarts of dill pickles yesterday and got a bushel of tomatoes for $7 at a local farm stand. They are ones that grew with scars but they'll make good sauce. My garden is only giving me enough for meals through the week. I'm just happy it is not a total loss. Today I want to spend some time out in the yard enjoying the weather.

I think we all told you to rest. Perhaps Travis is doing his part but you won't do your's and sit your bum down?

I've been doing jams. Tomatoes in my garden aren't doing good though a couple have ripened. Rabbits got the cukes and did them in. A few squashes but God only knows if there'll be enough good weather for them to turn out.

Please you must sit and put your feet up when you can.

I'm back....upset and happy at the same time. Love the ducks, they're beautiful. However I think they are both drakes. Wth!?! Guess I'm just not destined to have ducks! I read that magpie ducks and drakes are identical as far as appearance goes. I separated them when I got home to see if one would quack and call out to the other and neither of them did. This guy was kinda out there. He told me the blue was the female and the male was the black. He then says "you know, let me just double check that they are in fact male and female." So he takes one over to the fence and I'm thinking Oh, maybe this guy knows how to vent sex them or something? Nope, he takes this metal stick with a string tied to it, hangs it over the back of the duck, waits for it to move a certain way and says "yup, this is a female!" I'm standing there like you have GOT to be kidding me! So he's sexing these things by an old wives tale!?! I was like ok fine, great, thanks a lot and left. I do want one of them so worse case is I rehome one. Another thing I'm kinda upset about is (and I didn't see this on them until I got home) is it looks like they're wing feathers were trimmed. They look awful and I'm wondering how to fix this?? Is there a way at all that they can grow back from this??? Pics below...

Here is the pair

Here are pics of the black and white's wings

Other than them both being drakes and the wing issue I do love them. Just wish one would be giving me eggs.

Please forgive me but.

Don't be discouraged. You're learning lesson many of us do. Don't trust the "experts". I spent over $180 on chicks and now I've got a rooster with crooked toes and hens that don't look like they should. Offspring with copper in them when they should be white. Which mean a lot of work on my part to clean up this mess.

@ Rancher............... and anyone else that might be interested!
All 3 ( Lav in the back )

Lav

Black

Not sure what this color is called !!

here are some pics of my Aracauna cockerals. They were hatched 5/4

Well I do like the Lavender and the black. The lavender would work best for me as most of my EE offspring are splits since my Amer roo is lavender. What are you asking and how would we arrange to get him? Send me a pm. Are you hatching anything at this time of year?

That is to bad. I think this barred frizzle chick is a roo. I think the Del patterned one is a pullet, so she stays. I've got four eggs under a broody hen that I think are Buckwheats.

It will be a while before I'm really sure, what these two chicks are. I do have two others that I've not paid much attention too that I believe to be Buckwheats too, but without the frizzle.

I have got to get a camera.
