The fruit is the best way to determine what kind of apple tree you have encountered. Use an apple-tree catalog or online resource to find pictures of individual fruit, and match it to what you see. Different varieties also mature at different times, which can help you to determine what type of apple tree you have.

That is to bad. I think this barred frizzle chick is a roo. I think the Del patterned one is a pullet, so she stays. I've got four eggs under a broody hen that I think are Buckwheats.

It will be a while before I'm really sure, what these two chicks are. I do have two others that I've not paid much attention too that I believe to be Buckwheats too, but without the frizzle.

I have got to get a camera.

Miquwid I DON’T USE Square buckets all though you can use square kitty litter buckets, I get the round ones at TSC screw a board to the bottom so they don’t roll around and cut a large rectangle in the lid but leave enough lip so the eggs don’t fall out .

Sunny glad your hubby is doing better and I know about them acting like a peach I wanted to tell the doctor to just leave mine in the hospital

Hubby is doing a little better today but still only drinking about 1/3 of what he is supposed and considering how he is on a liquid diet that is not good.

Morning All,
Back to work. Bleh
Decided to let everyone but the newbies out today. Didn't want another day of them luring my KCs into the woods and staying there until dusk again. Figured they can observe from afar today and watch how much time the other two spend in the yard rather than in the woods. Hope that helps.

On another note I'm seriously contemplating the whole silkie "project" I wanted to get into. I think I may downsize and only keep the pair of lavenders I got from Geri, along with one splash hen from the three chicks I'm waiting to grow out. I feel like this summer was a big flop with that breed. I feel like all I do is wait and wait and wait and wait with those birds. The lavenders will finally be 20 weeks this week! I feel like I've had them a year. I'll be lucky if I get an egg from my hen by the end of the month. And then what? I probably won't attempt to hatch any, who wants chicks thru winter? So again, more waiting. I guess it would be different if I were able to keep more or had a bigger coop for them, but thats another thing, I can't let them out with them my orps, so they're confined to their coop/run. They don't get much interaction with us other than if we go up to the coop to see them and take one out from time to time. IDK, just been thinking about it. Not sure which direction I'll take with it yet.

Interestingly enough apple trees are grafted in order to reproduce the same apple variety. I bought "The Apple Lovers Cook book and learned a lot.

Do you know that the seed in your apple and planted it , it would produce a completely new variety. The genetics in apples is amazing. In fact each seed would produce a new variety.

Many we have today are only because they're marketable. Cornell is coming out with two new varieties.

In 1905 the USDA cataloged all the known Apple Varieties and came up with 14,000.

I would love to find , Black Oxford, Ambrosia, Arkansas Black, Cox's Orange Pippin, Pink Pearl and many others. Some do well in the south or the north west , while others only do good in the cold north east.

Rhode Island Greening, Ribston Pippin, Roxburry Russet, Sierra Beauty, Winter Banana, Westfield Seek no Further, and the Zabergau Reinette.

And of course the recipes. Squash Apple Gratin, Welsh Rarebit with Apples, Tennessee Cornbread Dressing with Sausage and Apple, Duck Panzanella with Apples and Thyme, Baked Apple Oatmeal Pudding, Apple Stuffed Biscuit Buns, llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

So post a pic of the Apples and we can see what kind you have.

Is it possible to be getting bit by something in the coop and the chickens not being affected at all? I am getting bites, similar to flea bites and I think we've narrowed it down to the coop. I have checked the chickens after dark with a flashlight. Nothing. Total coop cleanout, sprayed neem and put down poultry dust. Our dog does not have fleas and no one else in the family is getting bit... which leads me to the coop since I'm pretty much the only person that goes in there.
Doing Eprinex tonight but feeling very frustrated! And itchy.

This tree is about 30 years old. It has been on the property since my Fiancee's grandfather bought it from the railroad and converted the area to residential. He also planted a pear tree that I can't ID. :-/ Well in about a month I'll be selling apples. The seeds show that the fruit is not ripe yet.

Had that problem. started putting lavender essential oil on my ankles before I go in. I never figured it out.

Stony, want some young Rouens at some point? I had a crazy broody Rouen set up shop in an old cat carrier in the coop. There's a coil of Romex cable in it from the wiring - she laid eight eggs in it. I figured I'd let her roll. She has five new ducklings, and three eggs to go. I have LOTS of Rouen peepers if anyone would like some once they've grown out!
