OMG, I swear I think my silkie rooster has to go! I love him but man, he does not shut up! His crowing has gotten more and more obnoxious over the last few weeks. All day long too!

that's why I had to get rid of mine. I swear he was trying to contact the mother ship without his record player.

Hi everyone. I'm catching up from sometime yesterday, and am enjoying the apple tree talk. Last year I bought 5 little apple trees, but am doing a poor job of keeping them weeded. This year they had no blossoms, hope next year they will. Some came from Trumansburg. I had gone to a workshop at Elderberry Pond, as they have been growing everything, including apples organically for a long time...

Lynzi, I have lots of bad feelings about that place. It seems to use about three Names, which I find strange, and they sold me sex links as Buff Orpingtons...and refused to admit it. I become very angry when I think of them. The people were pretty skeevy too.

I had a friend take care of my flock while I was gone, and my son took care of my newf. the flock thrived under Jessie's care, it took me a day and a half to work my way into my dogs good graces. She behaved terribly for him too. I guess she will not tolerate me being away two weekends in a row. Message received.

Now if you remind me I might but up to a trip south to jhinks in the spring. She's got the best Orps you can find north of the dixie line. IMO. I had a roo from her and he was gorgeous. Gave him to a friend.

It is very, very damp here. We live in between 2 tall hills, along with our house, yard, the county road, we have a creek that runs along. Otherwise the hills go straight up on both sides. But should that stop blossoms? We have a wild crab apple tree that is always full of blossoms, our neighbors' have 2 apple trees, Northern Spy and Golden Delicious that were loaded with blossoms and now fruit this year. I just don't understand. Sunshine is always an issue here with everything but we watched for weeks to see where the most beneficial sunshine was. They were bought 3 different years at 3 different places/nurseries. I just cannot figure it out.

I would love to find some edible Crab apples. Bet they would make good jelly or jam.

What do people do with crab apples? I have a crab apple tree in my back yard I discovered just this year. The apples on it are huge too. I do not remember this tree having apples last year, which is weird cuz it's not a young tree by any means.

Isn't it SO frustrating???

We had an ant problem. I bug bombed the basement and put traps outside near my potted egg plants. Nasty this year.

If I don't find anything by then I'll go in on an order. although I'd really like to find either a few ducklings or hatching eggs at this point. This way I'll know who is a female by December and they'll be laying by Spring.

I was just looking at the State Fair dates and wondered what my chances of finding a magpie at the state fair would be? Are their specific dates that people post their birds for sale? I've never been yet.

You might be able to find who ever is in charge of the Poultry at the fair and see if they can put you in touch with someone who has magpies.

I'll try that, I just texted my friend and I think her and I are going to pick a morning to go ourselves to check out the livestock. She'll be looking for rabbits and alpacas I'm sure and doesn't mind taking a trip there, kid free! LOL

 

[Tough Old Bird]

I'm spending the day washing all pillow casings from our couch (not an easy chore) and spreading borax all over anything that can be vacuumed. Letting it sit for a few hours and hopefully dehydrate whatever's biting me! No new bites since yesterday morning, but I have made sure to apply neem oil on my lower legs every time I go outside. I smell.

For anyone who lives in Tully or surrounding areas...
Just got a FB message about an elderly woman in that area who has lost her African Grey. She is desperate to find it and there have been a few sightings of it. Keep your eyes in the trees for an unusual bird and if spotted, contact me? The bird will NOT approach a man, but may be convinced to come to a woman.

My sister-in-law lost her African Grey a few years ago; she was gone for about 2 weeks. They NEVER thought they would see her again, but someone did find her (a group of kids playing at a school playground) and had seen the flyers all around....so Annabell made it back home safely! So there is hope for this bird and her frantic owner to reunite. What is the bird's name? I don't live in Tully, but am not terribly far...so I will keep an eye and ear out. Thankfully, it's summer time, but there are plenty of other dangers, unfortunately.

[Tough Old Bird]

I boraxed my carpets and bathed dogs on Saturday. They've had bathes. I've treated their bedding and my carpets. They've had flea treatment and they are still itching.

According to my vet, it is a terrible year for hot spots due to high humidity levels. My dogs both are suffering the itchies, and my older dog ended up with an infection on his face. He has never had an issue with hot spots until this summer (he is 6). Are you sure it's fleas causing the itching? That being said, reaction to flea bites may take a while to work out of the dogs' systems. Benadryl, 1 mg per 1 lb. of weight does help the doggies itch and is perfectly safe.

There have been a few people that say they hatched chicks from a double yolk, but usually they don't because there is not enough room for 2 chicks to develop fully.
