NY chicken lover!!!!

When the hawks sit in the nearby trees etc they are getting serious. It is a bad crime to do anything to those birds, as unfair as it seems. When they were keeping my girls in their sights a year or so ago, I kept them inside for a few days so there was nothing to see. They moved on.

I agree as unhappy as your hens will be at least they will be safe and the hawk will get bored.

Just a thought I've been chewing on for a while that perhaps you could advise me on. The Fair. I am very disappointed, irked etc that the poultry exhibit is so horrible. I would like to contact the director of the fair to complain and request that they make changes so that the birds brought for exhibit are healthy, in good plumage, their quarters are clean, and spacious enough that excessive pecking doesn't happen, and if it does, the owner deals with it. (I saw one being pecked bloody a couple of yars ago.and people said there was a dead bird this year, I saw several very sick looking birds, maybe some with mites...) it also seemed like a couple of people brought huge numbers of birds, not just their best.

I hear people say that other shows are clean and show good quality healthy birds. I want that for the Fair. What they have is not good for the birds and gives a bad impression of chickens dirty, smelly, disgusting. It can't be good for people to see poorly kept birds.

How should I proceed? I haven't gone to other shows...perhaps I should for research. Can't bring money.

Glass well we have a world of people right at our finger tips so we can definitely ask around and get pictures. But yes research is best. I can start looking around, I was upset as well when I went, I made my son wash all our clothes and sneakers. We washed our hands and disinfected our truck.

TAB I hope you have a great weekend as well.

Brella what kind of cat is that? I just got cats around me and I told my neighbors and all agreed except one that on my property they get trapped and go to shelter. On my parents old farm the cats took down larger birds and chickens as well.

Remember this? She had a 2" gash that extended down her neck/shoulders.

Anyone interested or know someone who'd be interested in re homing my 4month old Splash(?)Silkie Roo??

He's not mean, he's very generous to the girls but he hasn't established his own little grouping so he hops on to the girls at the same time the dominant Roo is mounting. The girls are getting double teamed and have bald spots due to them being pulled in two directions..
I hate to get rid of him, he's so cute and funny...but my girls are looking a bit worn out and winter is coming so they'll need all the feathers they've got left...ha
Any help would be greatly appreciated, free to a good home/pot!?!?

239 unread message Sorry I am not replying to them all LOL!.

Tab You can't bounce baby out so please be careful. You are right with school and being part time now at Madison County Office for the Aging I am busy plus Hubby is still home since his surgery doesn't go back to work until after 9-20 and he has been in a building mood plus it has been kinda nice to spend some time alone with him while the boys are in school.

My classes are night classes this semester everyone else hates picking them up I like it am more of a night owl. Madison County OFA is great and I love it and it is only 2 days a week so it is not bad. As soon as hubby goes back to work I will get into my routine and have plenty of time.

Ok did you ever hear the saying be careful what you wish for well Rancher my hens caught your hen's Broody Hen Disease LOL! I have 3 Orpingtons sitting on eggs, my lavender Silkie is sitting on eggs, and 1 more of my orpingtons I think is going to be going broody. Hubby bought me the most adorable pigs they are Hereford Pigs and their coloring is like the Hereford cows Good thing when they get bigger they are no longer cute little piglets they become stinky noisey walking Ham otherwise I might have a problem with butchering them.

Unfortunately with it being the early stage of back to school I have caught some type of crud Tummy Bug been running a fever last night and tonight it is 104.1 after Motrin which of course I am freezing and have pellet stove going along with furnace cranking of course everyone else is getting roasted out but Oh well they will have to deal with it. Ok am going to get off and try some Tylenol too .

I am sorry you are sick. You must be careful, where you eat and what. Plus wash your hands every chance you get. I keep wipey's next to the computer to wipe it down before I use it. It's a shared computer so I must watch out with my allergies and all.

As far as broodies. I've three young chicks running with an EE mom, but others are okay. My sussex mom will most likely lose her youngster when I go to the auction. Now sure what it is but suspect a roo.

Dear Neighbors,

I'm Bonnie, your neighbor with the chickens and most importantly the rooster. Recently it has come to my attention that there are some complaints about Duane crowing early in the morning. I was unaware of the extent of the distress he seems to be causing someone (or someones) in the area with his noise. I work both during the day and overnight a few days a week and sometimes I am not home at the time the offense seems to be taking place. The officer who came to the house the other day has actually not disclosed to me which of our neighbors have made the complaint so I have chosen to send a blanket letter to everyone around us.

I am allowed to keep chickens, even roosters. My rooster is even allowed to crow but we all live here and there is no cause for me to be unreasonable. This week after I was made aware of the complaint I took some steps to help stop the early morning wake up calls. I want to manage the problem rather than just kill Duane, which has been suggested by the officer for me to do. I have changed my coop door from always open to closed at night, this stops the chickens from coming out in the morning until I let them out. I purchased a baby monitor so I could better hear the noise in the coop overnight on the nights I have been home this week. There was some 6am crowing but I realized that was connected to the time that the coop lights on the automatic timer went on. I have since pushed the timer back to 8am. It may take Duane and the girls a few days to get on the new later schedule.

I am in the beginning stages of starting a small farm agriculture business and having at least one rooster is important to keeping my hens happy and safe. Roosters have a number of benefits to a backyard flock of chickens: Roosters alert the hens to predators (we have a fair number of hawks around here) and will even fight them off or sacrifice themselves to save members of their flock. Roosters “keep the peace” among the hens by sorting out fights that happen between them. Roosters also prevent the girls from wandering too far and even round them up and make sure they are in the coop at sundown.

Chapter 86 of the town laws: “The Town Board finds that problems concerning the disturbance of peace, quiet and tranquility by noise from various sources and activities are best resolved by thoughtful discussions and cooperative agreements between affected parties.” While Agriculture noise is part of the exemptions to Chapter 86, I am willing to work with you and make reasonable accommodations. I can not guarantee that he will never crow overnight or in the early AM, but I am going to do what I can to have it not happen before 7:30am-8:00am. If you have any further concerns about my chickens please feel free to contact me. I may be at work but will return your call soon as I can.

What do you all think? I am going to give this to the neighbors.

A couple of things, well more than a couple.

1. DO NOT give out information about when you are home or not home. There have been burglaries. Even if someone is home during the day or not don't give out this information.

2. DO NOT give out information that you know what times he crows. This could be used against you.

3. DO NOT give out phone numbers or other personal information. They know who you are and if they can't come and contact you in person they probably won't.

Keep is short and simple.

1. I know there have been complaints. 2. I'm doing what I can. 3. I am legal. Nothing more and nothing less.

As I said before I think there is only one complainer and I think it's the officer. DO NOT get into long discussions with your neighbors. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.

If you must go to court bring the necessary information. If you have talked with anyone at the town hall, be prepared to give their name. Keep good records of who you talked to and what got said.

Being nice is bull, just be civil, they are not the same thing. That's why they call it "Civil Court" and not "Nice Court".

With all this rain, I have had similar issues with the sand that I like to spread around the outside pen for dusting and just to combat the beaten-down, hard-packed clay and dirt. Much of the sand has been washed downhill outside of the pen. Grrrrr.....

TOB

One thing that may help is to toss scratch and treats in different areas of the yard. Not in the same place. I do like to toss it along fence borders a few time as they scratch and dig up any tall weeds. Areas of the yard that are taller get the scratch. Make them work for it.

I'll be anxious to see how things go with the mint. The only raised beds that don't get bothered if they get in the garden, are the mint ones. The variegated Pineapple mints should look nice.
