NY chicken lover!!!!

It's definitely "Fall" inside the netted pen! Only instead of leaves the ground is covered with feathers, Stella's feathers! She looks very mangy but I'm glad she's going thru a molt, her new feathers that are coming in are beautiful!!

Nope they love the cabbage. If you have old onion netting, put a head in it and suspend from the ceiling, its like a piñata for them! LOL

This year my different breeds are molting at different times....weird. My Lav orps molted in June, the Coronations molted in mid August, Silkies, nothing yet, Marans just started a few weeks ago. I don't notice the Marans so much, but the white Coronation feathers make it look like someone broke open a feather pillow.....

At least I'm getting a few eggs a day from them now.

Hopefully I'll have enough to crank up the old incubator mid October.

Well i made the chickens eggs today. 12 eggs, 3 extra shells, a head of brocilie, onion powder, red pepper flakes, parsly, basil, and garlic powder. They loved it turkeys did also but not sure i'll feed them that again. It had powers or something. My chickens have been bossing the turkeys around well after eating they finaly stood they're ground. I had to break big daddy and tom up. Even grapes wasnt takeing anything from the ladies.

Big daddy is my roo, tom is my tom turkey, grapes is my hen turkey. My daughter named the hen. We asked her why grapes she said "so i can say i'm eating grapes for thanksgiving".

I'm not really sure who is molting. The marans don't seem to be. I think the CR's are. I don't seem much in the other coops though.

Still not many eggs from any of them. Perhaps the Dels mostly.

I am worried the BM's are laying somewhere else cuz I'm not getting many from them at all. They do hang in the woods and I should probably scout around.

I've still a lot to do, but had the queen today and I've been so tired.

The newest Grit I have has an article on building a "shed" out of pallets, that looked really nice.

Here's the wound today:

A lot less evil-looking. She had a bit of a food issue there caused by the fact that she's having some precision issues at the moment. It turns out she hadn't been drinking well because she couldn't quite figure out where to put her beak in the waterer, so I nudged the waterer up against the cage bars so the other birds could stick their heads in and drink. When she saw them doing it she used their movements to figure out what to do and she was slurping down water when I left.

Still, today she's a little more perky and even yelled at me a little while I handled her.

I haven's lost another bird and I have yet to even see a hawk so I'm really confused as to how it happened. I know they're migrating so I guess it could have been one passing through and it left right after.
She looks a lot better. I am sure it will take her a little longer to figure out how to do every day things again. Glad to hear she is drinking & eating. Thats a good sign

I sure do! Lol Although I'm not fan of feather pillows anymore. :-/
Stella definitely needed this molt! Her feathers were so dirty and had a yellow/brownish hue to them on top near her tail. They look so bright and vibrant now. Can't wait for the rest to come in!

Updated pics from my chicks that hatched last month. The coloring has changed a lot. Some how I have a barred or I guess partridge. These are from reds and white leghorn maybe my light Sussex passed some barring on or something?

is one on left a blue or lav? I always call them grey lol.

Cute Babies I believe the one on the left is a Blue if it was a lighter grey it would be a lavendar

Well, this is what greeted me today when I went out to do bird chores. I'm putting it under a spoiler because it's very not nice, and anyone squeamish should probably stay away.

My camera refused to take a focussed picture, but you get the idea. Does anyone know what could have done it? Maybe another bird? I checked them all and none of them had blood on them. I am also missing her half sibling, so could it have been a predator?

Right now she's in a cage inside the mostly completed hoop coop with her remaining three siblings and the guineas in the hoop coop to keep her company. I put neosporin all over the wound and put aspirin in her water. She's still eating and drinking. Anyone else know what I could do for her? Poor little thing. As you could probably tell from the pictures, her eye is gone and part of her face around the eye area was torn up.

It looks like some bird beak got ahold of it.

Coops are all cleaned! Everyone's happy. Now if only they'd show me some appreciation by laying some eggs!

I've been getting a phone call a day from some telemarketer trying to save me money on my electric bill. We just got a new phone number yet again because we switched phone companies and I cannot stand all the stupid calls. If our cell phones worked here then I wouldn't even have a home phone but in order to make/receive a phone call I have to go out on my porch. What kills me is the minute these people get on the phone with you they're like "Do you have an electric bill? Can you give me the account number?" I'm sorry, you haven't given me your name, the company you work for, but yes, let me give you my electric bill account number! Ugh! Such idiots!
THis is how I reply to them Are you going to pay my bill? Can I have your checking account number so I can send it to my power company to make sure they debit the bills from there. That usually gets them and then I hang up on them

Lynzi try upping their protein with eggs & meat. One of my girls is molting hard and I have been giving her eggs with garlic and herbs and lots of animal protein. Chicken wings, mackerel, liver, ground beef........it seems to of helped and the other girls who are moulting are not molting as bad.

All my hens are fed grower with oyster shell always avail on the side to them. I have 2 pullets not laying yet so it's easier to feed their fermented food that way. Within the month they will all be on grains only. I'm sick of buying commercial feed when I can make my own cheaper, they eat what they need of the oyster shell themselves and I have nice hard shelled eggs this way.
How do you do the fermented food and how are you doing the grains only?
