NY chicken lover!!!!

I didn't know lady bugs bit. Though I have read they're good luck. Keep us posted if anything great happens, like you win the lottery. If you do and share , I got first dibs.

Funny you mention that because as I was vacuuming them outta my son's room today I said to him, "Ya know, they say ladybugs are good luck...at this rate, with the amount you have in your room, we better be winning the lotto!" LOL

Nutty is trading me for all my extra birds and CR's and a BM and perhaps an EE and any others I can snag. So I feel better. At least til late winter when I start hatching again.

Update on the Sussex hen, she is out with her friends now. I kept her inside since the attack. Not a mark on her and she was eating and leaving some serious big poops. My measure for how they're doing in such situations. If they're eating and pooping that's a good thing.

I had to put down the BR roo. He was doing fine but took a turn for the worse and I just couldn't let him suffer. Everyone else in the coop is fine. I have no idea what was wrong. I think when you free range they might eat something that is not good for them.

I had been giving them some vanilla yogurt with their pellets mixed in and he was eating it, but not so much this last time. He was very weak and had no fight in him poor guy. I will try to order eggs from Jeremy. I do like BR's and they are very well camouflaged.

I also may order from Paul Harter again, Dels and NH's. If anyone is interested. I won't be keeping them all.

I know I missed a page or two but I hope all is well. I need to get to the gun range and get my license as well. I've been slow moving on that. Well yesterday morning people are awesome drivers darn near ran me and my dogs over while out for our run. Really when I have the walking sign on the light that means I can go jerks. UGH One thing I hate about city life, now I understand why my son cuts through different streets and yards to get to and from school so he doesn't have to deal with that. So this morning after I let the dogs and chickens out I made my self two silkie egg wrap, get my dogs ready for a walk and one is bleeding all over me from his ear I wipe it off. We go outside and before I can start the walk I drop my egg wrap. In anger at myself I yell leave it and of course my dogs looked like we wasn't interested anyway LOL. Fine we walk get home put everyone away and go to work. It's real busy as per any Saturday, we get some interesting customers, and I cut my finger whatever no big deal. Get home dog's ear is fine so that is good.

So on the egg front I upped the protein and added a light. Monday I got a fart egg, Tuesday I get one egg, Wednesday I get two eggs, Thursday I get three eggs, Friday I get four eggs plus two from my two silkies in a separate coop, Today I got five eggs and again two from the silkies. So the big coop has 1 roo, 13 hens only 7 are laying, small cool has 3 hens only two are laying. So 9 total layers and I got 7 eggs today pretty darn good! The big coop has the light and upped protein the small coop just has the upped protein.

On the roo front he is doing an amazing job Love him always checking on his girls keeping things in line, making sure they eat and don't pick on my youngters too much, he's has good manners if they older girls don't want to be bothered then he leaves em alone, very respectful of my son and I's personal space. If the girls make a peep he comes running to see what's up (he's extremely protective), if they run in a different direction he goes after them to make sure they are safe. When the hawk is by he sends the warning. The life of a roo seems hard but I guess if you got 13 woman to mate with it's worth it at the end of the day!! LOL

I hope all is well Take care and have a good night

Good you were able to trade! Sorry for your roo. That is good your sussex pulled through though.
The Dels your ordering are they eggs or chicks?

Lynzi our ladybugs don't make it long in our house the spiders or the cats or dogs kill them. Only moths seem to be around and only one or two. Well if you win the lotto you could send a duck or silkie my way!!!!

Ok so I have 4 dead chickens 4 missing chickens which I think are dead as I have found feathers randomly in the yard. Ok my chickens are normaly under the bush right by house or in some of the bushes around my house/barn hardly ever out in yard open area. Or they are about 4-5 feet from my house. I found my roosters feathers by my house under trees, he's still alive and looks to be missing a lot of back feathers but I didn't see any blood when I picked him up tonight. I found my bantam out in yard along with one of my barred rock hens in middle of my back yard where they do move some times. I found 2 other barred rocks along the the edge of my field way further than they have ever been before or any of my chickens. I also found feathers to one of my birds in the middle of the field which she is never that far. At first I thought a dog got them. Not many feathers are missing on them and only wounds I can find are on back but after looking at them looks more like a claw than bite mark and only on the back. I have had no problem with my roo mounting any of my ladies even my bantam. I'm wondering if my tom turkey who has been chaseing my roo some has now tried to mount the hens and killing them. Or a bird of prey but the only problem with bird of prey is the fact that none of the chickens I have found so far are eaten at all. Here are a few pics of wounds maybe tell me what you think.

Edit I got home around 630 pm and when I lifted the legs of one of barred rocks she was warm under the leg between body still. We left around 12pm.

edit 2: Just read someone saying they've seen dogs kill birds just with paws wich would match this I know neighbor has a rot that runs around sometimes. I think it went after roo on side of house then proceded to go through the yard across it into the field. I thought this at the start but then the wounds didn't look like bits but more claw.

I hope izzy my OE frizz from tab comes back her and my barred rocks was my fav. chickens.

JLaw - I can't really tell by the pics but do the wounds seem to be on the same spot on all the birds? If so then I would say maybe your turkey IS going after them. I would think if a predator was going after them they would have ran back to the coop? At least that's what mine do as soon as they see something in the sky. Sorry

Jlaw, I'm guessing domestic dog. 2nd guess would be grey fox as they tend to hunt as family's.Where Red foxes hunt alone. Being your hen was still warm the attack happened just before dark. So grey fox is certainly possible. But I still think domestic dog as they kill just to kill.
Lynzi chickens can't outrun a dog or fox. They will run any old way in these cases as the frenzi goes on to try to find safety.

JLaw, sorry you came home to this. Learn to set traps. KILL whatever did this.

I don't understand why BYC has a spoiler alert. If someone can't handle the images of dead chickens then they better not own chickens. Nothing against you JLaw. I just don't understand BYC's thinking. Dead chickens are a fact of chicken raising. Funny....I just wrote an article about that
