NY chicken lover!!!!

Gramma I'm sure white plymouth rocks are great chickens especially as pets but I really wanted a few white egg layers that I could bread I I already have enough production egg layers to make more hybrids. But I really wanted to breed some Leghorns and give the white eggs to my dad, I mean I do have a brabanter (white egg layer) but I'll willing to part with her if someone is interested in a breeding program in NY. So we will see. I'm also getting Cream Legbars for blue eggs I just like that breed. So again Imma post around the Rochester Chickens forums to get my leghorn and see if someone wants my other girl and if not I will keep her. I leaning towards the idea that she is a Rhode Island White she has an attitude. Seems my chickens are either nice or nasty LOL
did you see this ?

For those on this thread with Silkies, can you take at this dilemma I'm having at the moment. I started a thread to see what others would have to say about it, here is the link.,..

Okay as a breeding pen I believe that it should be okay, Yeah I see what your trying to do and it makes sense.

That's cool no I didn't but I found a face book club, My friend is hatching them now and in the spring once she thins out the flock for breeding purposes she will give me a few hens.

I thought I might get to read but DD is in the hospital again. She may have to go early with this one. I'm watching the Queen.

Oh and anyone want a Del roo he's up for grabs. Take him to the auction or eat him I don't care. He has to go.

I hope your DD is doing okay.

I only wish you were closer. I have 2 hens and I'd have to say they are my absolute favorite. But no one has them (other than hatchery). Syracuse is too far for me to travel right now. You would think as long as I've been on these threads that I would know, but who is the Queen? We refer to my daughter as the Queen because she's the only girl, and quite frankly acts like one to us sub servants.

My best wishes to your daughter.

Now, mine goes right into the chicken net with me as I do the watering - he is more interested in chicken poop and unless a chickie flutters and runs - he ignors them -

Same with mine. They pretty much ignore the chickens now. If I have the younger three birds out, I would not let the dogs out unless I am out with them.

I started by sitting with one dog next to me and under my control. Little by little the dogs were conditioned to understand that these were "our" birds and not part of the wildlife.

Still to be safe, if I have the younger three birds out free ranging, I don't let the dogs out unless I am out with them. Like Metella said, when the chickens spaz out over some unforseen thing and run around with their wings flapping, I am not 100% my dogs wouldn't have some predator trigger reaction. As long as I'm out at the same time, I know it's OK to have them all out together.

On a humorous note, the Coronation Sussex thinks she can take on my pit and starts to strut towards him with her chest thrown out. Luckily, he is a good boy and looks at me like "

Congrat's on the new dog, and I hope he is a good fit into your family. Tell Little Girl to be very patient and give him lots of space right now. Especially when food or toys are his focus.

Well, I just got done posting in a thread where the person wanted to keep 18+ hens in a coop that was 16 square feet, and most of that space taken up by nesting boxes and food and water, and on top of that not provide adequate run space too because they are in violation of their homeowner's association by having them and want to try to hide them. I think I may have come off as harsh, but come on, 18 hens? I wouldn't even keep four in there. I'm not crazy am I? I mean, 18 hens in less than 16 square feet? To me that's cruel.

I have about 75sq.ft of floor space in my coop, however it's rectangle, about 10x7.5 and it still feels small with my 19 full grown chickens in it. Come spring when I have chicks I'm opening up the other half of the shed for chickens if we still live here. They're outside from about 8am to sundown but I couldn't imagine! I caught something on TV the other day where these women in alaska were "Spring cleaning" their chicken coop, I actually got sick because the "bedding" they were pulling out was like the wettest, most disgusting horse stall bedding I had ever seen. Caked and matted layers and layers of poop that had been allowed to sit all winter with not enough bedding or turnover for the number of birds they had. terrible.

I just gave the girls the insides of the kids pumpkins and they loved it. It took them a bit to figure it out, but when they did it was a free for all!

I am going to try this with the pumpkin "guts" and seeds we scooped out of our jack-o'-lanterns last night. I can just serve the whole kit and kaboodle raw, right??

PS: LYNZI - cute new silkies!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks TOB!

Well I got home from picking my son up at school and the three bigger ladies were out of the chicken yard and the blue chick was back in
hu.gif
Not sure how that happened... So everyone is out free ranging and I managed to get the blue chick in the big coop/run and locked her up. I think she really thinks she's a silkie! Thats the last time I raise a silkie chick and orp chick together! By the way, that last silkie chick that is growing out will be up for grabs to anyone who wants him here first. I'm 90% sure it's another roo that I don't have any use for. And I'm 90% sure he's black, not dark blue. Also, now that I got a better look at the two splash I picked up this weekend, one is definitely a cockerel, not a hen. So since that one has better splash coloring than my splash cockerel, I will be keeping that one and my little boy will be available too. If anyone is interested PM me, I'll be placing an ad this week. I don't need 4 rooster crowing from my shed this winter. LOL

Well now he's not that good of a roo, but I have eggs in the incu and perhaps when they time comes we can meet in the middle. Or if you come to the picnic.

The Queen is the only GD on both sides so spoiled like crazy. DW is the worst at doing so.

DD is doing okay. If she can hold down some solid food they may send her home. She's scheduled a week from Friday.
