NY chicken lover!!!!

Has any one used those little solar yard lights in the coop for a little bit of light or would it not be worth it?
I heard of people trying it but the only problem with them is they aint on a timer. And who knows how long they run I've had some run all night on my porch. So if bright enough could make the ladies think its day all night. I'm sure they could sleep with them on I mean they sleep in sun in summer and people use heat lights for waters and for warming coops. I thought of using them I tried to google some with timers but all I found was set ups to build a solar light kit with timer no prefabed ones.

Well I finaly got around to making a pop door cause I wanted to lock turkeys up in the coop cause they're poo is black but I think its from eating toooooo many grapes next door. The buggers squeezed through my 11w x 12h door. But they desided to eat small coops food so I locked they're dumb butts up in there instead. Stupid turkeys just got fed was in a 12x8 coop and they traded that in for my 4x8 coop that had little feed in it cause I feed the little guys first.

Glad to hear everyone else is having loss of eggs and feathers.

Honestly, I've never had so many feathers come off, EVER! Don't they know it's time to put on extra layers. (No pun intended) I have 17 hens. I get 3-5 eggs a day. I have Silkie mixes and get 3 -4 eggs a day. The difference? The Silkies have a light.

Is anyone else having tick overloads? We don't have it here (in our yard) and I give the credit to the chickens. But my Grandbeagle, Millie went for a run out in the country nearby and came back with 10. She's treated with Frontline, so it's supposed to keep her from getting Lyme Disease but yesterday, I let her out in their backyard for 1/2 hour and my son found another one o her last night. She must be a tick magnet.

Forgot to mention...I DID get a hold of my BO hen this morning before letting her out to free range, looked her over and didn't see any bugs so PHEW to that! Seems she is getting new feathers in, saw a bunch of new "quills" popping out under her wings and on her neck. Just thought it was weird cuz these aren't "old" looking feathers that are falling off her, they're small fluffy "new" looking ones.

Sally ticks are just awefull this year, people are starting to push the lyme vaccine. Sometimes even if it repels ticks those buggers can still latch. Im a pet groomer and so many are having this problem.

Sunny for solar lights i have two motion flood lights and several small lights leading towards the coop. For light for egg production i got an all weather extension cord. Solar lights get expensive for something like that start up wise.

Well now see here's the story on being scared of the dark.

A mother needed her broom one night,  from the back porch and told her son to get it.

He replied, " but mommy it 's dark out there".

She said , "Just get me the broom."

He replied, "but mommy it's dark out there and I'm afraid".

She said,   "You don't have to be afraid, God's out there."

So he opens the door and  sticks his head out and says, "God please hand me the broom".  :D

I don't have pics but I've taken colored and white Christmas lights and strung them all around my garden and in the chicken runs.  I also have a spot light on the back of the house.

We live across from the ESM stadium and when there is anything going on there the lights , light up the whole back yard all the way to the woods.

As for eggs?

I just go out carrying the ax and singing,   "Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, hen's gotta lay or she's gonna die. Can't help lovin those hen's of mine".  ( From the move Showboat)

OMG your a trip! Lol

I wish I had a way to do that but I don't. Honestly if they had laid all summer I wouldn't care, I understand that they do take a break from laying and probably need it but I didn't get nearly the amount of eggs from them this year that I did last year - and last year is when they hatched! So I got more eggs from them from the time they started laying last year, I wanna say end of August is when we got our first egg, thru to Spring time this year and then barely got anything all summer up until now. Owell. Hopefully someone will start up soon.

Yeah i think its the light. Mine need both high protein and light. Did you say awhile back you gave them higher protein?

My silkies are laying well with just higher protein and no extra light.

Had two women fight in the grooming saln

Yes I did, they back on Grower because no one is laying and I have to feed it to the chicks anyway. So they all get it. Once they start laying and stay laying consistently, I'll put them back on layer mash or pellets.

I have a little solar lantern that I have hanging on a hook out side of the coop to have a little light when I go out. I've been meaning to buy a bigger brighter one. I'm like Lynzi, I don't like going out in the dark being out in the middle of no where. Unfortunately I don't have a choice, I have to do it. I usually let the dogs out in their run while I get dressed before I go out to the coop that way they can "scare" anything away that might be out there. I havn't put it in the coop, but I have used it once like a flash light.

Ticks..YUCK!!! I just pulled 3 off of my cat last night.

I gave the girls a break when they started molting, turned down the timer on their light and have slowly added 10 minutes at a time back to them. I'll continue to do it this way until I have them back to 14 hours. I've also switched over to feather fixer for them. Right now I only have 2 Silkies laying and I'm planning on one more hatch from them.

I didn't know how long they stayed on, I've heard from some they run out of juice early, you must have some good ones if they last all night!

*knock on wood* no ticks this year, but this is the first time I've had a flea problem. My vet said they were really bad this year, luckily I got it under control early. Cute pup!

I'd like to run an electric cord up to the coop for a water heater, It's just too far from the house. :-(

Well thats true if the light doesn't work for them at least I would have something to use to collect eggs with when I get home!
