NY chicken lover!!!!

TOB Yes Zeke is a pit mix. Our vet in Texas said a little boxer, chow, lab and maybe some others. He's been great with Riley, just letting out a grumble here and there if he bothers him too much. He's coming up on 14 years old so we enjoy the time we still have with him.

all of this talk on meat birds. All birds are meat birds. All are edible. We eat probably 40 to 50 Sumatra roo's a year. I find it so much easier to stick with one breed you like and to kill the extra's for food. Rather than having yet another pen to keep "meat" birds in. ( I already have 9 and will need one for turkeys eventually and possibly one for pheasants).

That was my plan to hatch out birds and eat the extras. Since I like that they forage I don't need to make an extra pen, and I don't have to worry about processing by 4 months before it's heart explodes.

I keep forgetting to mention, (and I am NOT by any means trying to push this on anyone! LOL) my son brought home one of those coupon books for a fundraiser at school if anyone near me is interested. They're only $20 and have a lot of great coupons in them for those of you who are frequent shoppers or like to eat out often in the upstate NY area. We'll probably be purchasing one but it's not like I can offer to my family because they are from CT and a majority of the coupons are only valid in the Syracuse area. If you're interested or want to know more about what's included feel free to PM me. Again, no pressure! Just thought I'd ask for those who love coupons!

That's cool my son did that and then we forgot all about it LOL

Does anyone remember the cartoon by Gary Larsen of the Boneless Chicken Ranch? It showed chickens softly draped everywhere ... That's what the meat bird idea suggests to me.

OOOPs, that is Larson, and on this iPad I hit the red flag by mistake. Drat. Sorry.

I'm actually on the fence about my dark blue chick that hatched July 6th this summer. Some days it's crest feathers look like a roo's other days it looks like a hen. Either way I'm looking to rehome it. I'll send you some pics tomorrow. You can let me know.

Just checked this and that would be great if have one.

when do you feed them ? Ours get fed morning & eve & treats at bed time so they always come back in ...
DH usually feeds them in the evening. We haven't had a problem until recently. I'm giving them the pumpkins and yesterday collard greens while they're penned to give them something to scratch n pick at.

Lynzi-- Your frizzle was beautiful. Sorry such a freak thing happened.

Brella - I suggest that you might use a cornish crossed with what you have now - or just do as the others say (Stoney et al) - and use the extra roos to sell to your neighbors - you will already be raising them until you know they are roos ..... then what I did with my extras was give them a separate pen so they didn't get too much exercise - feed them well - and they were very tasty. still 100 Times more room than commercial chickens have - plus 8,000 times more fresh air and mental stimulation - so while it is not as much fun as free ranging every afternoon like my main flock -they still get to be chickens while fattening up.

So they won't taste exactly like a store bought bird, but you can tell your neighbors that they are pesticide and hormone additive free :) Cook them slower and longer than a normal chicken and they should be sooooo tasty.

Well i let the silkies free range with the group against my better judgement. I just dont understand how 2 bantam silkies and 1 brabanter can cause so much trouble in a flock of large birds. They did whatever and barely have crest now so they can see that might be the problem. They are something. Gotta buy more straw soon. I love the 40lb bags of DE super wonderful. Have a great day lots of cleaning here then cooking then the Walking Dead¡!!!!!!!!!¡
