I agree with Cass -
Gram probably chose that day because of your brother .
Older Folks often choose to live till a certain Date like Christmas or someones Birthday or their own Birthday or a Anniversary

Up to 39 chickens in my big coop but only like 9 are full size others range from 1-3 months I think. I don't know what it is but I never seem to have a problem putting smaller chickens in with any of my others so far. I do have a problem with my stupid turkey hen. Since I put the turkeys in small coop and let the younger chicks run around the yard I keep the turkeys locked up. Well I had wife let them out and for her to watch them so they don't kill my chicks. They had to go right back into the small coop. The hen started pecking all the chicks wife said. So I guess I split the day for them and let the turkeys out for a few hours in morning then chickens rest of day. I cant wait to eat these stupid trukeys and get rid of my ee roos.

I have a few too many chickens atm if they was full grown.

TOO MANY CHICKENS ? You admit that ?

Lynzi i know your looking for a blue/green layer but i have rhode island white or white plymouth rock up for grabs. Im not sure which she is because i was suppose to receive two leghorns and i ended up with one leghorn and this other one. Im pretty sure shes a rhode island white i dont handle my chickens too much so she isnt super friendly but not mean either and forages well and comes back to the coop at night. I really am looking to replace her with leghorns. If no one takes her then we may use her for breeding hybrids and then dinner. Shes about 4months getting big to.

Morning all. Rainy today but the coops ran out anyways. Last few days for the big girls before we process them. Its going to be a rough Sunday for dh and I. Transitioning thelma and louise to the big coop sat night. They are my two inseparable heritage rir girls. I expect the girls in the coop will give them a hard time but these two are bigger than almost all the ones in that coop so hopefully it won't be too bad. I will be cleaning, disinfecting, repairing and restaing/painting the empty coop in preparation for chicks in the spring.

Bill is getting better in the manners dept. He sort of tries to challenge me from time to time now but a flapping of my "wings" and a low sounding no puts a stop to it right away. I have to split freerange time between his group and my silkies as their last encounter left no doubt that bill and my silkie roo little man would fight to the death.

Jlaw--is it possible to have too many chickens??? Your birds are looking good btw. You could always can some if your wife does any canning.

Off to sling coffee. Have a good day!

That reminds me, today I noticed that Shay has shiny lobes, any idea why an EE hen would start getting shiny lobes? Maybe she changed her feather conditioner so she could have more shiny feathers? Lol A chicken lady on FB said that EE hens who are the dominant layer in the flock can get these traits, the slightly enlarged comb, the shiny lobes and the waddle nubbies. I know that Shay lays, so she can't be a roo. Thoughts?

I just looked those two breeds up, very pretty! Once I get my new coop and see what I'll be working with as far as room goes with what I already have I'll let ya know! I love how bright white they are but I'd really like to find a colored egg layer first if I can, and ONLY it's a good egg layer! LOL I don't need another slacker around here.

One of those sex links I got by mistake has grown spurs. I hope she's not planning to give up laying eggs. She'll be two in Feb. she could still be tasty canned, no?

Lol for the coops I have yes for me no. I like to give them 4 sq ft per bird and once turkeys are gone and I put some in small coop i'll still be a few birds over my limit. Now they do free range so I could get away with less space per bird I think but I don't want to crowd them. My poor rooster already has problems with the ladies. I think they peck his poor beard off at night time or he's going through a molt It's so hard to tell with him he's had such a ruff life these past few months. First he's missing half his beard pretty much on one side. I think cause they was all fighting for the top roost so I lowered it down to other roost height. Then we believe a dog attacked and missing most his back feathers and a lot of broken tail feathers. And then the tom turkey desides he's boss and chases the roo around some leading to more feathers messed up. Now no beard at all and maybe looseing more feathers hard to tell. He's a trooper though, even with only down feathers on his back lol.
