Thanks All! It was definitely needed! The coop my orps were currently in is questionable as far as making it thru the winter. It is now the ducks house and has been altered for them - removed the nestbox, took out the roosts, threw some hay in there. But I think I'm going to have to drape a tarp over it when it begins to snow to help make it last and stay dry under the snow. And I especially needed something like this that was more off the ground and easier to clean! I just love it! Stony did a really nice job. My birds are going to love it!
Funny I thought tonight was going to be struggle getting them in there, but after we moved it to the spot their coop was up against the house, Gru started crowing and running towards it now that it's getting darker out and everyone came running. It was quite the funny site to see. I've never actually seen him crow to get them in the coop. I just assumed once they saw him go in that was their cue to follow. I think everyone will be in there shortly for me to snap a quick pic!
I have no problem with it sitting on top of the coop, I just wanted it protected from getting wet. I never got around to sanding the roof down and re-staining it, not did I ever put any kind of better roofing on it.Snow is a great insulator and I believe there will be plenty of it this year. I may just throw some up against my hoops. Also just keep dumping more straw and chips on the floor of the runs.
My plan is to eventually have a place to stack the chips and straw up so I have it during the winter.
Quote: I've fermented oats, soy. I like whole grains. I have a lot of chickens, and its messy enough with whole grains.
how long do you ferment the grains ? I thought of using less processed food ....not sure how long to ferment ..the pellets do it overnight
I starte after 2 days. Fermentation is quick. Even letting the grains soak for 24 ours increases the protein. My issue is I have a bucket near each pen, 13 of them. so its a real time issue for me. and now with the freezing weather, not feasable. If I had just a few chickens and kept the bucket in the house it would be eaiser, but I have too many chickens for that. I appreciate anyone who can do it and keep it up. If I had a heated room in my barn, that would help, but I don't, and for Silkies, they get their crests wet and its a mess. The chickens love the fermented grains though so it you can do it, by all means do it!
