NY chicken lover!!!!

Quote: Because I saw many people writing about lack of eggs, including myself, I posted about production breeds. Even they, need added light, and it is a pita, I know cause I light all my coops with 15 hours of light, and still am not getting the amount of eggs I'd like. But then, all my birds are heritage not production. Well, except the Brabanters. They were my best layers last year, but now aren't laying at all. When they kick in, they lay like crazy. Finding a happy medium is probably the best way to go. I often think I should get some leghorns, just for my own consumption when the other breeds stop, but then, I remember how much better my Marans eggs taste so much better than other breeds, I hesitate to get yet another breed.

I see...I just wanted to be clear that I wasn't looking for eggs from birds who have been laying for me all summer.

Just would have been nice to have something lay all summer where I'd still have eggs left over but I don't. Just such a big change from last year to this year in the little time that they had to lay last year.

Evening all. The cold is on. I see that I am not the only one who is getting only a few eggs. Only getting about 9 eggs a day. The cheeps are eating up a a storm. Dh has yet to bag a deer. been working lots. take care everyone.

Au contraire, on the Leghorns being a production breed. There is a line that are Heritage dual purpose, just like the RIR's. Both these breeds were once meat birds.

My suggestion of keeping a mixed flock has worked out well for me. I average 4 -5 from my 11 Dels. I get about a dozen a day from my birds which works out well.

Strangely enough Buckwheat a three year old frizzle has begun laying. I have no idea why. I do wish I could get her in with my lav araucana, but I'm not willing to risk moving her.

I may stick the new frizzle hen in with him though.

I suppose one has to plan for the lull in winter.

I tried to raise a few baby bunnies when I was a teenager. It is a long story, but to shorten it a lot, I was mowing some tall grass and noticed some things coming out of the mower that wasn't grass. I managed to catch 3 that were unharmed and tried to raise them. One died that night. I think that it might have been run over by the wheel. The second lasted for a week, then the third was doing great then a month later it died. The vet that my mom asked said that wild rabbits in captivity lose the will to live so I was lucky tha they lasted that long. I'm not sure if she really called a vet or was trying to make me feel better...I think that I should ask her. I hope that you have more luck then I did..but then again I think I was 13 or 14 at the time.

My lights around the chicken coop & run.

Just enough light that I can see around without a flashlight!
Very nice!

This is completely off topic but I figured you folks would be the best to ask since most live in areas like myself or even own one of what I'm looking for....But I am looking for an ATV that is more kid friendly than adult. Something that is like around 80cc or a little bit bigger but doesn't not go too fast. I'd like to find one for my son for Christmas and the only places I've been able to find this size is online. Doesn't anyone in the Syracuse area know of a dealership that sells the models for kids? I'd really like to get him something he can use in the yard and because there really isn't a place to ride bikes around here I thought it would be neat to look into a smaller ATV for him to use and eventually my daughter as well. For those that own an adult size ATV, do the dealerships generally carry smaller ones for kids or no? I just hate to make a purchase like this online and have something go wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated - feel free to PM me as I know this is really off topic...

For those of you with Silkies, do you provide them with any additional heat (light bulb)? I read somewhere where they recommended it. As I have 5 adult Silkie mixes and 3 teens in an 8x10 coop; Is there enough to keep each other warm? 2 of them huddle on the floor, while the 3 other adults roost. (The 3 little ones bunch in a corner) I'm thinking of providing something on the nights that get down in the teens here.

I took part of the venison carcass out to the chickens on Monday, it's nearly picked cleaned. Everyone thought I was nuts.

DH's deer was a spike with very long spikes, reminded me of an antelope. It was nice sized though.
