NY chicken lover!!!!

Been a while since I have had time to post skimmed through some of the posts but no way I could read them all. Work has kept me way too busy but semester is almost done so will have a little more time although half of it will be spent running around to doctors as I have surgery coming up in January so have some preop visits I got to get done.
On the chicken front I have some new layers and unless the RIR start stepping up to the plate and giving me bigger eggs they can guarantee they will be the last RIR I have.
I have also decided to get rid of a majority of my Silkies I had originally gotten them to show but after hearing all the horror stories about the fair I decided not what I want to put my birds through so will keep a few of my favorite silkies but the rest will be going if anyone is interested let me know .The ones I am getting rid of are show quality birds they were purchased from some very reputable people

Out of the few posts I did read Lynzi I think your birds aren't laying cause you move them around too much coupled with not enough light any time I've gotten new layers they stop laying for a while because of the move and if I move them from one coop to another they go on strike again.

Tab I am sorry about your grandma

Rancher congrats on the new little king

Pharm people can be such jerks and it seems so many are rude

If I missed anything I am sorry been trying to keep up just not having success

Hi Nutty

Well I survived my first week back to work, but DH needs to get in the routine of getting the girls ready in the morning. I set up everything I can the night before for him. I brushed out a big pile of knots in my middle ones hair because he didn't brush it yesterday. Brushing teeth before school is another issue. I wish I could get a shift so I could get them ready.

My chickens seem to have increased egg production this past week compared to last few weeks prior. I think most are done molting and some of the young ones have started laying. I was just able to meet the customer demand for them this week.

edited to add: sold 12 dozen this week

www.chickendoors.com It was pretty easy to use & I move it from one end to another and all I had to was remove 4 screws disconnect the solar panel and move it to the opposite end. Oh and I had to move the small battery to. But alll in all it was very simple. Took maybe 20 minutes?
Well I had an ee dead in coop in corner not sure what happened there always seemed fine and all the other chicks seem fine. It almost looks like it flew into the corner and broke it's neck if it could do that. No feathers all over just head crammed in the corner.

Those with the auto pop doors how big are they? That sounds like something I need since I don't always get out there at same time depending on how late I work or stay up they could get out anywhere from 6 am to 11am.
Sometimes chickens just die. Might of been a genetic thing you couldnt see.

The opening is 11" wide by 15" tall.

Nutty---nice to hear from you. Sorry you have to downsize your silkies. I dont show because I just didnt want to deal with all the hoops I would have to jump through just to do so and after hearing about health issues that can arise. I keep mine for my pleasure (dh calls them useless)) and sell hatching eggs now and again. Mine are also all from show lines. I like to give them a makeover every so often so that they look like they are going to a show!

Aria--hmmm, maybe retirement to become a fulltime chef and silkie breeder? Haha.

Jlaw--sometimes these things just happen. Ive had a few hens that died for no apparent reason. Kinda goes with chicken keeping.

Got my stuff from First State Vet supplies. I will let you all know how well these supplements work. My sexlinks havent had feathers on their backs for month now. I know its not the roo. The nongmo feed seems to have made some difference. Had a nice chat with Dr Peter Brown, the chicken doctor and he gave me some tips, etc.

I might have to post pictures of me in all the coops since I have been working so much. My cheeps have hardly seen me except to let them out and a quick fill of food and water. Weather is going back into the deep freeze, according to my joints. Off to another fun filled day at work. Stay warm everyone!

Just how much sun is needed to run the door? We live in such a gully that I don't see the sun until after 10am and it's gone on the other side 6pm. In the winter, some of my little solar lights stuck in the ground.. I feel bad when I don't get out to let them out until 8am and that's not often. We all have to do what is best for us.

BTW afl, we named the hen that is sister to Edie, "Edie's Sister". We are so original.

Morning Everyone,
Went out to the shed this morning to find my newest splash hen dead.

I'm not sure what was going on her, but this is the same one I had a removed a week or two ago because she was looking lifeless and didn't put her back until she perked up again. Well she had been fine from what I saw, walking around with the others, eating drinking, she even came out of the run the other day and walked around the shed while I fed and watered the others. Then yesterday I noticed she was in the dustbath box I had put in their run weeks ago, not moving around too much, just resting there. I thought oh boy here we go again! But as soon as I fed them she went over to the bowl with the others so I thought Ok maybe she was just resting and is fine. So I left her because I saw her eating and drinking. But again, when I picked her up yesterday she felt really light compared to others. I don't know what what her issue was but I didn't separate her and I probably should and of course I'm kicking myself now. Think I'm pretty much done with these silkies, I wont be adding anymore, just keeping the 4 I have in that coop/run and that'll be it. I'm just so upset, that was the nicest quality hen I had.

Thanks !! Maybe the girls will get a door for Christmas !!

Quote: It says 2 hours a day is needed. I had one day it didn't open. But I think that's because of the freezing rain on the lip of the door. Yesterday it was overcast & foggy all day. Sun never came out but the door still worked.

Hopefully Edie's sister is not a slacker like Edie who has not laid an egg since September

Hey ya'll I got a quick question. I live in the City and I dont get good day light hours, but I was wondering which automatic coop door to go with. I've read here on the boards about several and am stuck between the pullet and the ador. Maybe i just do t know any better but are there other ones out there that come with a timer? I dont think solar is the way to go for me.
