NY chicken lover!!!!

:frow  Hi Nutty

Well I survived my first week back to work, but DH needs to get in the routine of getting the girls ready in the morning.  I set up everything I can the night before for him.  I brushed out a big pile of knots in my middle ones hair because he didn't brush it yesterday.  Brushing teeth before school is another issue. I wish I could get a shift so I could get them ready.

My chickens seem to have increased egg production this past week compared to last few weeks prior.  I think most are done molting and some of the young ones have started laying.  I was just able to meet the customer demand for them this week.

edited to add: sold 12 dozen this week

Tab so glad you survived. Sorry about the girls hair that was one of the things about mostly boys give a buzz with theclippersand you didn't have to comb it. Could you maybe braid their hair before bed although Travis would still have to take it out and brush it .

Nutty---nice to hear from you.  Sorry you have to downsize your silkies.  I dont show because I just didnt want to deal with all the hoops I would have to jump through just to do so and after hearing about health issues that can arise.  I keep mine for my pleasure (dh calls them useless)) and sell hatching eggs now and again.  Mine are also all from show lines.  I like to give them a makeover every so often so that they look like they are going to a show!

Aria--hmmm, maybe retirement to become a fulltime chef and silkie breeder?  Haha.

Jlaw--sometimes these things just happen.  Ive had a few hens that died for no apparent reason.  Kinda goes with chicken keeping.

Got my stuff from First State Vet supplies.  I will let you all know how well these supplements work.  My sexlinks havent had feathers on their backs for month now.  I know its not the roo.  The nongmo feed seems to have made some difference.  Had a nice chat with Dr Peter Brown, the chicken doctor and he gave me some tips, etc.

I might have to post pictures of me in all the coops since I have been working so much.  My cheeps have hardly seen me except to let them out and a quick fill of food and water.  Weather is going back into the deep freeze, according to my joints.  Off to another fun filled day at work.  Stay warm everyone!

Pharm I don't have to downsize I just decided to cut it down to be able today more attention to my favorites I have about 40 silkies so just want to cut it down to my favorites which are my pets

Morning Everyone,
Went out to the shed this morning to find my newest splash hen dead. :(  I'm not sure what was going on her, but this is the same one I had a removed a week or two ago because she was looking lifeless and didn't put her back until she perked up again. Well she had been fine from what I saw, walking around with the others, eating drinking, she even came out of the run the other day and walked around the shed while I fed and watered the others. Then yesterday I noticed she was in the dustbath box I had put in their run weeks ago, not moving around too much, just resting there. I thought oh boy here we go again! But as soon as I fed them she went over to the bowl with the others so I thought Ok maybe she was just resting and is fine. So I left her because I saw her eating and drinking. But again, when I picked her up yesterday she felt really light compared to others. I don't know what what her issue was but I didn't separate her and I probably should and of course I'm kicking myself now. Think I'm pretty much done with these silkies, I wont be adding anymore, just keeping the 4 I have in that coop/run and that'll be it. I'm just so upset, that was the nicest quality hen I had.

Lynx I sorry about the Splash hen I have had some just diefor no apparent reason I think it might be either heart or cancer but it does suck especially if they are your favorite. If you do decide to replace I have some nice splashes and paints both male and female just let me know

If it kept covered for a day or more it is more pungent..if you stir it or pop off the cover occasionally it will smell less .
Hard to do while on Vacation ! So you see how easy it is to do fermented feed .
I think it smelt because it wasn't stirred enough...I forgot to tell my dad about it when I left...ooops. It's not covered though, is it supposed to be?
I love how easy it was though. I think I'm going to start another bucket of it so I can have 2 buckets going at once. I'm just worried about monitoring how much they eat and making sure they get enough since it's not constantly available.

Had 2 silkies hatch last night and more on the way.

Quote: Here is another tidbit about fermenting that I find...If I feed some every day mixed with their normal feed, they pick out the grains, and leave the mash. I find the mash dried in the bottom of their feeders the next morning. If they do that, they are not getting the protein they need, so I have started feeding it every other day. Its funny cause the days that I dont include it, they run over, look in the dishes, then look up at me like "ok, where is my food?" LOL or "what is this crap?" Ok, so I'm projecting....

Tab: 12 dozen, wow. I've never had that many in one week. Slackers....

Who are these People ?  Non  Chicken People ? N C People always ask me what do my chickens do in the winter ? They are Amazed when I tell them ...they go out almost every day .
If it is too snowy they get a path shoveled for them
People also get rid of chickens in the fall because they dont want to have to heat the coop ...the chickens heat it !

They are chicken people lol

Been a while since I have had time to post skimmed through some of the posts but no way I could read them all. Work has kept me way too busy but semester is almost done so will have a little more time although half of it will be spent running around to doctors as I have surgery coming up in January so have some preop visits I got to get done.
On the chicken front I have some new layers and unless the RIR start stepping up to the plate and giving me bigger eggs they can guarantee they will be the last RIR I have.
I have also decided to get rid of a majority of my Silkies I had originally gotten them to show but after hearing all the horror stories about the fair I decided not what I want to put my birds through so will keep a few of my favorite silkies but the rest will be going if anyone is interested let me know .The ones I am getting rid of are show quality birds they were purchased from some very reputable people

Out of the few posts I did read Lynzi I think your birds aren't laying cause you move them around too much coupled with not enough light any time I've gotten new layers they stop laying for a while because of the move and if I move them from one coop to another they go on strike again.

Tab I am sorry about your grandma

Rancher congrats on the new little king

Pharm people can be such jerks and it seems so many are rude

If I missed anything I am sorry been trying to keep up just not having success

Welcome back

Glad you had a great week back! Congrats on the egg sales.

So sorry for loss.

Hi everybody!

We got back from Indiana early. My uncle and I both got bucks on the first 2 days so we had a good time. I got a 7pt. and he got an 8pt. I guess the deer population was down from some disease and the bucks that were there weren't as big as they usually were. We were just both fortunate enough that the first buck we saw were good sized. It was fun getting the deer back though as we had the car fully packed on the way out and didn't bring a cooler with us. It was a sight to see how we all fit. Well, I'll have to start catching up on the pages I missed.

Welcome back congrats on you buck.

This is why I asked how common are tape worms.  Same thing happened with my BR roo.  Don't know what it was.  No one else seemed affected.  I do know they get cancer so perhaps this is a problem.  Without a autopsy how can we know?

So yesterday I got an e-mail from Pet chicken and decided to have a look. I saw Lav orps for $37 each.  Is that right?

There was another breed that was expensive too, but I forget which is was.

Nutty, it's good to hear from you again. Hope all goes well with the doc and stuff.

Tape is very common and varied species. Usually injested through poop.

Rancher if you're looking for lavender Orps, the woman I got mine from last year raises them. She's located in Oneida, used to be on BYC but not sure she gets on here anymore. She's very reasonable.

Actually, she has a trio for sale right now, two hens and a roo.

The Chooks enjoying some Kale in the safety of the run...... The HAWKS have been relentless. Grrrrr!
On a side note I think I'm going to get a couple panels of clear roofing and attach them to the run as a wind barrier for the winter. How are you all faring the cold so far?!?!
