Well, I'm down to 14 hens. And one rooster who is on thin ice. I was wondering why with the warm day and sun none of the girls were outside. So I went down with their afternoon stuff, and by chance counted them. Total of 14. Then I saw that one of the Sussex was hidden behind one of the nest boxes...but I didn't see the other Wyandotte....at the back of the pen it looked like something had been digging, but it really was the Wyandotte with her feathers all scattered. There were wing marks leading to that spot, couldn't see a single bird footprint. I think that a hawk must have snatched her and tried to fly but she was too heavy and couldn't get up high enough and had to stop at the fence. It is significant that there are no marks of Earl coming to help. I don't think he is a very good protector. We may need to be looking for a new roo.next year.
They're upstairs in my old office. I actually closed the heat vent to that room because I believe that's what was screwing up my humidity before I started the hatch. The room stays between 60-67 degrees. I do not have a turner, turn them myself three times a day. I'm done with that LG. Haven't been too successful with it.
IDK but I'm about to pull them since they don't seem to working properly.Seriously though, Why would a fertile egg not develop at all in an incubator? When I started this hatch I had 4 silkie eggs in there that were fertile. Nothing happened with them so I chucked them. I recently placed two more in there after setting the next 3 aside. Checked one of the three and it was fertile. Today is day 4 these eggs have been in the bator and not a single vein! So I am literally down to 1 single Orp egg in the bator. I will be shocked if it hatches. And if it does hatch, at least I have those EEs to place it with. I'm giving up on the hatching for a little while. Although I'm going to want to test out my Brinsea when I get it for Christmas so if the Silkie isnt laying any more by then I'll try some Orp eggs.
Wait till day 7-10 for veins i never see them on day 4. I swear somtimes i think the vein charts showing stuff on day for are made up.
Just checked my incubator and it said to operate in a room with temps between 65-72. Which is why I always ran it in my laundry room and thats where the best hatch rates have been so far however that room has GFI outlets and when it trips it trips the whole room. Thats how I lost one of my hatches earlier this spring. My directions say put it in a room with out a draft .
if the room is colder ..it has to come on more to keep up the right temperature .
if the thermostat is set at 99 deg ...it has to be warmer than that in there to maintain that temperature .
Trial & error ...I had no success either ..I may try again in the spring ..if no one goes broody ..
Unless I can get some chicks at the Picnic at Tabs house ..
I am looking for RIR , Australorps , maybe some kind of wandette ,
I had heard that Brinseas aren't good for silky eggs. Something about to many technical parts that silkies reconfigure causing them to emit sounds you can't hear, but other birds can hear.
