Brinsea are fine incubators. I just never could afford one for the number of eggs I like to hatch. That and my genesis was recommended too.

Ohhh LOL Ok I was gonna say....Ummmmm.....Not according to the woman who recommended it to me. LOL

If I was BIG into hatching and had the room to keep more than a dozen chicks I would get something bigger. But for what I'm doing and since it's all trial and error right now I figured I'd better start small. I think it holds 7 regular sized eggs and maybe an extra or two for smaller silkie sized eggs? So thats a good number for me. I just worry if I were to hatch a dozen and all 12 hatched I'd have a hard time selling or even giving away the chicks.

Perhaps your roo is a hit and miss and not all eggs are fertile? I'm just guessing mind you but it seems to me there'd be some red in there by day 5 right?

Pharm thanks for the reminder......I knew I forgot to do something earlier.........I wanted to open the screen door window more so hopefully the DL can dry out some. It's not wet per se but damp to the touch.

The humidity seems so much higher this winter. Tomorrow after some more shoveling to hopefully get down to the ground, I'm going to kick up the DL some more so it can dry out, probably adding some peat moss would help as well. Some scratch thrown on top will get the girls to help the process.

I did get most of the snow off the old run......why is it a shovel full feels like it weighs a half ton? Lol

I raise buckeyes. I love the breed. Tabs also had some(from me) but did not like them. I hatched 36 for myself this year and kept 1 cockerel and 5 pullets for breeding in 2014. The rest are in the freezer. They taste excellent! They are good layers (not excellent) and are slower growing than a meat bird. But this is to be expected from a heritage breed. They do very well in the cold weather. Mine are out everyday. I do shovel paths for them when the snow get deep. I will be hatching in the spring if you are interested.

I've been crazy busy and missing significant chunks of time on here. Trying to catch up on at least 6 or 7 pages tonight, and I'm glad I caught your post above. I am satisfied with my flock of 7 right now, but when and if I consider an addition, Buckeyes are definitely among the top breeds of interest. Thanks for reminding me it was you who had the buckeyes. I'd love to see some photo's when and if you get a little time. Meanwhile, thanks for the useful info on the breed; this is helpful.

Its suppose to act like marking the area. The scent is suppose to help deter them from going there. They smell something they wouldn't go around normaly.

Wouldn't mothballs work better? i would think animal hair would just be used for bedding purposes by whatever is burrowing under the house. Pet URINE might work better, but not sure you want to get into the dynamics of collection!

Oh definitely! That's why I cracked it open. I've always seen veins by day 4.

My Lonely Orp egg is still going strong! I really hope this one hatches! What a bummer it would be to see so much movement this far and have nothing come of it.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Moth balls give off a highly toxic neurotoxin in the form of gas. DO NOT USE THEM NEAR ANIMALS OF ANY SIZE.

I do recall hearing something about this....had forgotten the details of the story, but an older fellow had been feeling ill and when they removed the moth balls, he got better. Not sure if it was proven or a coincidence, but....

My directions say put it in a room with out a draft .
if the room is colder ..it has to come on more to keep up the right temperature .
if the thermostat is set at 99 deg ...it has to be warmer than that in there to maintain that temperature .
Trial & error ...I had no success either ..I may try again in the spring ..if no one goes broody ..
Unless I can get some chicks at the Picnic at Tabs house ..

I had heard that Brinseas aren't good for silky eggs. Something about to many technical parts that silkies reconfigure causing them to emit sounds you can't hear, but other birds can hear.

Gramma chick,I may be able to help you with your chicken addiction. I am raising Australorps ! non-hatchery and from a very good breeder. Right now the girls are still pullets, but hopefully by May they'll be laying well ! If so, I'll be bringing eggs to Tab's

Ditto to both cautions. I am not sure how Grandma lived to be 90+ cuz she used moth balls to store clothing all the time. She did, however, air the clothing out well, or wash it before wearing it.

Mothballs are poison. That's how the kill the moths. Do not use them in any area inhabited by things you want to live a long healthy life.
