Must be love    :love

I said to him the other night, "I'm glad to see it takes a rat intruding on our property for you to take an interest in my chicken keeping!" He played it off like he's doing it because I would never in a million years touch a trap with a rat on it and once one was caught that would be the end for me unless someone else took care of it. Which may very well be true but still....glad he's as excited about catching these things as I am! Lol

Hoping all you in the east part of the state stay warm & don't get buried by snow from snowstorm Hercules. We have had snow all day, high winds and single temps and the windchill is -10 and dropping. If I didn't have to go to work I'd never leave my house till the temps got back up the 30s :D

He's a man, he's killing things, what's not to be excited about? Besides rats carry disease that you and he could get sick from. KILL 'EM!!

I went out and snow blowed twice. My arthritis is hurting real bad. Found a frozen cracked.

I had stapled more fleece over openings and I can see the roosters are bloodied a bit.

Had one hen who was determined to get in the coop from the hoop coop she was in, but then she's done that before. Stupid girl stood on one leg in knee deep snow waiting. I finally caught her and took her to the large hoop coop. The wooden coop is packed already.

Gave them all some scratch this afternoon so they have something in their crops.

I am worried it's so cold. There is not electricity to the hoops and I've no heat light for the wooden coop. I'm strongly considering trading orps for Wyandottes. The only breed I won't change is the Dels of course, but I do wish Marans came in a rosecomb variety.

So I had to share something unusual.....I just went out to check heated dog bowl and decided I would take bird seed out with me and spread all over the DL so the girls can eat it in the morning when they get up.

The girls have been roosted for a couple hours now but Stella and Sophie jumped down from the roost to start eating the bird seed I threw down. Makes me wonder if their really hungry? They have never done that before........they were fed small portions of ff twice today so they shouldn't be that hungry I wouldn't think? Perhaps the frigid temps are making them want more food? They were busy making craters in the DL today so I'm sure they were eating things they found in it all day? Think tomorrow I'll dump in some more shavings for them then throw more bird seed in. Thinking a bowl of seed wouldn't be such a bad idea either till the temps get higher.

Thoughts?

Unless their food dish was empty I'd say no. Just like kids they eat what they like. I tossed scratch down but they still had plenty of food in the feeder. They all came running. They will eat the scratch before the pellets. Don't know why though.

i agree with stony, definitely more. i like your garbage can idea, try a better bait, something with smell, bacon, hot dog, heck maybe a donut. better chance if they can smell it. big rat like that can probably jump out of a garbage can, but if he takes the bait, maybe leaves some droppings, at least you can confirm you have more, keep us posted
