i agree with stony, definitely more. i like your garbage can idea, try a better bait, something with smell, bacon, hot dog, heck maybe a donut. better chance if they can smell it. big rat like that can probably jump out of a garbage can, but if he takes the bait, maybe leaves some droppings, at least you can confirm you have more, keep us posted
We have TWO traps set under my rabbit hutches so they don't get buried in the snow tonight. Fingers crossed!

So I had to share something unusual.....I just went out to check heated dog bowl and decided I would take bird seed out with me and spread all over the DL so the girls can eat it in the morning when they get up.

The girls have been roosted for a couple hours now but Stella and Sophie jumped down from the roost to start eating the bird seed I threw down. Makes me wonder if their really hungry? They have never done that before........they were fed small portions of ff twice today so they shouldn't be that hungry I wouldn't think? Perhaps the frigid temps are making them want more food? They were busy making craters in the DL today so I'm sure they were eating things they found in it all day? Think tomorrow I'll dump in some more shavings for them then throw more bird seed in. Thinking a bowl of seed wouldn't be such a bad idea either till the temps get higher.

Thoughts?

Just weird they came off the roost tho. It's been dark for 2 hours already,

Did you turn the lights on in the coop ???? I do the same thing, throw stuff down at night for them to get in the morning. BUT, if there is even the slightest amount of light, ( from a flash lite or head lamp ) they will get down and start rustling around. Hungery or not it doesn't matter !

No lights on in the coop. I have LED Christmas lights on but their on the outside. But a few bulbs shine a little bit into the coop. Bet that's it. It's not enough to see well in the coop but I can see the girls roosting & usually miss the craters they dug in the DL LOL

Who can resist the cuteness, except Rancher?

Its winter time they are going to burn more calories to stay warm so feed intake will be higher.

Had a casualty tonight when I got home from work. I found Static, one of my laying Barred Rocks, on the floor of the coop curled up as if she were sleeping. Frozen. Everyone else was on the perches, she's always on the perches. I don't understand why she wouldn't be up on the perches where it's warmer. Not the chicken I would have thought I'd find dead of cold that's for sure. (The Six juveniles, Frenchie the mostly naked Barred Rock)

So, What do I do to prepare a chicken that is already dead? I assume it would be different since I can not bleed the chicken as I normally would.

sorry you lost your girl. You do nothing different. When hunting turkeys or ducks they are never bled out. They are killed and processed later in the day. Same applies here.
