Edited to add:  That tall ice chopper we all have by our back door to keep the steps clear of ice in this weather makes a WONDERFUL poop remover.  Wait for the thaw and slide that baby under the poop and pop it off the floor.

ahhh....doesn't everyone have one of those straightened out hoes that are used to chop up stubborn ice from the steps? Well, if you don't have one, time to get one, cuz they are GREAT for cleaning poop off of ever flat surface chickens find to poop on.

No not here LOL I'll have to look into it. My husband usually throws salt down which I hate because they everyone tracks it into the house! Ugh

I didn't see too much IN the brooder, I mean I'm sure it's there. But it's almost as if they were using my items in there as "litter boxes" I had an old pitcher and a glass food dish in there that had a lot of their droppings in them. I threw them right in the trash. Come to think of it... my trash company STILL has not showed up today...whats the deal Feher?!?

The mice were probably just sleeping in there . I wouldnt add chickens after bleaching it out ..without it either rinsing it our letting it totally dry .
I would then smell it to see if there is still bleach odor / fumes

SORRY - I ddint think I posted those rock chickens ..I looked back through pics & didnt see them

TRash Service - We have a small local trash company ..If there is a holiday they usually are a day late ..Other than that they are fine ..

SCOOPING POOP off roosts - i tried a grill cleaner / scraper . It seemed to work real good till I bore down on it too much ...it actually shaved the wood . Dont know if I will use it again ..I am afraid of splinters

We like to put it out in the morning so it doesn't blow all over and end up in the ditch across the street. They delight in getting here before we get it to the road. They will self righteously not cross the street to get it if we bring it up when they come back down the road on the other side. And they don't fish it out of the ditch either. grrrr.

My mailman does that sometimes ..I am standing by the road with packages ...after he already went by our house...
he will stop by me & then say " not picking up any more packages today" Just to see my response then he will laugh ..then say just kidding

Hello I'm in Westchester County NY. Just wondering if anyone is near me in Westchester, Putnam or Dutchess? My bf and I are new to raising chickens and our first chicks will arrive around April 23rd. In the meantime I'm keeping myself occupied researching and making plans of course. I can't wait!

Morning all. Been off the last three days and dealing with this weather. Been hauling water ever three hours or so in this bitter cold so the cheeps can drink. Even my water heater couldnt keep the waterer in the big coop from freezing over. Had to bring it in to the cellar and let it thaw so I could actually pull the top off to fill it. The terrorists refuse to go out and have been in their coop for three days now. The pop door gets opened every day. My sexlinks are the most stressed with this cold, hiding in the nest boxes. My heritage rir girls and Bill seem to be handling it well. My silkies have been okay with this weather. Their feathers seem really thick right now so I think it helps insulate them better against the cold. Only getting 3 eggs a day from the big coop and a couple from the little girls. Had to pitch a couple that froze and cracked before I got to them.

Getting number 3 daughter home this past weekend was a trial. She was supposed to fly home on friday. We got to the airport to find her plane delayed. We waited and it was delayed again. She told us to go and so we did. Just got off the thruway and she calls to say its been canceled. Back down we go to get her. She is rebooked for saturday. Gets a call on saturday that its canceled. After about 4 phone calls she gets a nice man who goes the extra mile for her. No flights anywhere out of NY or Ct going to Atlanta. He finally finds one out of Newark at 6 am sunday morning. Gets her a connecting flight in charlotte, all first class and no cost to her. Dh gets up at 2 am to drive her down (I have to work) and her plane gets delayed on route to charlotte. She was worried about missing her connection but that plane was also delayed so she made that one. What a weekend, all because of the snowstorm we had. She was very lucky to get home as many others did not. Her classes started again on monday and she had to work as well so she had to get back. I like driving better.

Enjoy your stay. Lots of good folks here with lots of information. Just remember that there is no ONE right way.....listen to all the advice and take what works for you.

My best advice is to build BIG. No matter how many birds you think you are going to have there will always be more you want....so build big enough to have space for expansion.
