NY chicken lover!!!!

I thought that it was just me that there wasn't anyone on all day.

It is sad that the highlight of my day is to see what is going on here. I've been having problems with my computer lately so at first I thought that it was me and I just couldn't see what was happening. Glad that it wasn't just me wondering what was going on.

I walked around the property today to see if the foxes are back yet. I saw some tracks but I think that it was from the neighbors dog that got lose the other day. Once they come back I'll have to hang out with the girls when they are out. Not sure how we could get rid of them. Usually by the time that they come back they have the pups with them. We don't want to kill the parents if the pups are somewhere. Need to find a way to get rid of the whole family! The last few years they have came here late spring and move on mid summer. We figured that one of their dens must be somewhere up in the woods in the back of our property.

If you can find the den, empty, maybe "marking your territory" with urine will make them move on? Male urine works best. (Carrying it in the male or a re-used cottage cheese container would work)

that has never worked for me. My friend who traps our land has WATCHED foxes and coyotes "mark" where he "marks" when he needs to go while in the woods. It is a lovely old wives tale or country lore. Just does not work. Death stops them. Nothing else does.

yeah, they do that too. BUT if you actually mark in the den? You don't think they would want to move on? And I guess marking the mark is where the term "top dog" comes from? LOL

alfalfa.ALFALFA ...LOL .We all have a word or 2 that just wont work in our brain .
I wouldnt overly worry about spelling ... I think most misspelling will be safe... longs we dont misspell SUMATRA !

We went to the feed mill again ..we will be switching permanently .
The feed is Fresh & wonderful smelling ..He said it is not GMO corn ...
and it is only 8.00 a 50 pound bag for layer ! Cash or check only ..
Quite a savings over TSC ..

I'm trying to figure out how they get Non GMO corn feed for 8.00/50lb bag. What is the protein source?

Also, I've got some EE and OE chicks in the incubator (and two Leghorn/Dark Brahma because they're easier to candle). Had one for sure quitter today, have three possible quitters but green/blue eggs are so hard to candle!

Where's this feed? We will drive to get it if it is non-GMO. Our 3 little ones ran away from a piece of lettuce.

We tried yogurt and they walked through it

I made them a scrambled egg and they walked on it, didn't eat it.

They sure do like those little crumbs, so far we got DuMore Chick Starter. IDK if it's non-GMO though. We had goldfish for a little while, until they got big and went to a pond. We made them clear gelatin with baby food peas, they loved it. I want our little ones to be healthy though so if we can get the non-GMO we'll travel to get it! Anyone going to the Herkimer College How to Raise Chickens class tomorrow?

Quote: How old are your little ones ?
right now all they need is the chick starter . That is especially formulated for them .
Dont worry ...at first they will eat bedding , paper , until they figure out what is food ..
So dont expect them to know lettuce is food

.
After a while they figure out you are dropping food...
want to have some fun ? put some dry dirt in the bottom ..mine were in a plastic bin
I think they were 2-3 weeks old in this Video

He just told me it is not GMO corn ..he said it is just plain corn . I dont know what they add for protein ...
THAt is a good Point though ...they need more in the winter as they dont get it from bugs & such
I can ask next time ..it will be a while before I go ..I do add sun flower seeds & milk / yougurt to their diet ..

marking in the den would do nothing I would think. what do they care you mark but you aint there to enforce it. it's the same as marking anywhere if you don't scare them off no point marking. But foxes are cunning they may be scared but will slink back in. I've yet to deal with them but what I've seen and read on national geographic and other shows they are cunning and clever. Figure you mark den they now have a marking of someone else to help ward off the den. no proof on that just and idea.

Sorry but if they raise kits by you then they think it's safe and they will keep raising pups and it will continue on through generations. You have to push them out much like cities push all wild life out. I know a lot on here don't want to do that my self included but if I see a fox or any pred on my land traps for live trapping and my gun will be handy.
