NY chicken lover!!!!

Why Do Birds: I hate to say it, but I would be more worried about my family obtaining germs from the chickens living indoors than my chickens getting ill from living outdoors. Chickens belong outside, not inside. But that's just my opinion. There are exceptions however, some folks prefer to brood indoors because they have no other choice (access to heat lamps, etc), some will bring injured ones indoors (but have them in some sort of pen for the time being) until they are well enough to go back outside.

Orbit ! HA HA HA HA Clean it up !

I will bring injured birds inside in a cat carrier. I have been known to sleep in a barn near an injured horse .... I let the dogs sleep on the bed with me - and goodness knows what their paws have trod upon.

Bakin - sans undies ! ha ha ha ha I have to admit I am sans a lot at home - but must rethink this - I don't want any EMS guys I call to run away before they help me!

why do birds ... yeah, I am trying my hardest to work toward many of the same goals ....

Anyone in need of a blue orpington or a blrw roo? Figured I'd offer them up on here before they end up in the soup pot......plus I really, really hate butchering birds in the cold and snow.

Speaking of butchering, has anyone made there own plucker? Or used one of the pluckers that attaches to a drill?

I tend to brood in the basement, or loft above the garage in cold weather. I'm working on building a brooding area in my garden shed. Last year I had 50 meaties in the loft wayyyy too long. Talk about stinky!!

But I also agree chickens belong outside. They love being outside....grass, fresh air, dirt, bugs, things to scratch and peck. In nice weather I'll set young brooder chicks outside in small pens, you can tell they are happy!

Oh my, I can imagine! Once mine hit that 2 wk mark I'm ready to give them the boot out the door! Not only do they stink but the dust! Ugh!!!

Well we got like 4 inches of snow today. Left in the morning to take the kids to "Billy Beez" (google it) at the mall. I have to go on their website or on Yelp or something and write a review because I have to say, I was truly impressed with everything about it. The atmosphere, the staff, even the people and kids that were there! Anyone in the area with kids should take a day to bring them there and yes I said a DAY! We were there from 10:30AM, took a break at 12:30 to go have lunch and then went back until 3:30. We didn't get home until close to 4.

Anywho...since it snowed, DH and I didn't get a chance to finish moving the coop to the upper part of the yard. So it's still sitting right smack in the middle. I did find the other extension cord and still have the light on in there for them and what I love most about this is that after dark, when my yard is pitch black I see them out my kitchen window, in their window since I left the coop sideways. So I'm watching chicken TV out my kitchen window. I love it!

Edited to add: I set 4 Orp eggs in the LG incubator today. I'm hoping the two better shelled eggs make it but I don't have high expectations of the other more "porous" ones. I wanted to wait and set a couple of more BUT, it's getting close to that 10 day mark AND if I set them any later than they may end up hatching while I'm heading to Buffalo for the open of the next Dino. And I don't want to have to worry about that while I'm gone for 2 days. I'm hoping if they hatch, they hatch by the 9th or 10th and they can be moved to the brooder by the 12th and my son (with the help of my mother) can take care of the chicks while I'm gone for 2 days.

Just checking back and read all the good stuff, thank you for the lists. But a thing to think about, we may buy pure seed, and plant it, but if there is a field near by, the crop we harvest will not always be pure, so if we save that seed, and plant it again, we won't be planting pure seed.

I find it depressing.
