NY chicken lover!!!!

You'll have to keep me posted on your extras that you will be selling. May be looking to buy some this spring/summer . May have DH convinced that I could build another small coop for some bantams. Our little d'Uccle is the kids favorite and I keep reminding him that little Peepers needs some friends her own size!

My roo looks like hell. He is doing alright I may try to take some pic tomorrow. His waddles are starting to turn black and dry up. I looked at them this afternoon and I just wanted to cry they looked so bad. His comb now has some blisters on them, but when I locked up tonight they weren't as noticable as they were this morning.  it looks like he may end up losing a little less then half of his waddles. Not sure how much of his comb he is going to end up losing. The first day of spring is only 53 days away. It can't get here soon enough!!!

I'll let you know for sure! As soon as my Silkie girls start laying I'll be hatching from them. ;-)

WELL We had a real Hawk attack today . Most of time it has been a FLY OVER
My other son was visiting today so I didnt spend as much time with the chickens like I normally do .
We were watching tv ...I said what was the sound ? We thought it was a wolf on TV ..I stopped the TV to listen ..
Didnt hear any thing for a few seconds Started it back up ..
THen the 16 chicken alarm went off ..I threw open the back door ...
It looked like Little Skiddy Sumatra against the side of the coop hiding under stuff ..
Chicken alarm still blaring ! I could nt see anything ..
so I ran out the side door of the house to the coop ..No coat No Sweat shirt ...just sneakers
Black Feathers all over the place next to the gate ..
I heard something in the run ..I go in it was a HAWK !
I see the sheet in there ..I throw it over the hawk & catch him ..
Bring him inside he is as still as can be ..What do I do with him ?
Take him back out side ..open the sheet he flies .. away
I hope he is smart enough to stay away ..
.He was very Pretty light breast with spots ..I think it was a red tailed Hawk .
Skiddy Seems okay ! he is missing a lot of tail feathers & some feathers on the back of his neck ..
I dont see any where that he is bleeding ..
I brought him inside to look at him & give him treats .
Cat Food< - he helped himself to that .. , and Grapes ..and lots of praise
Here is a bunch of his feathers still more in the run & in front of the coop

Liittle TT is definitely Broody ...Tail up ! Makes these little clicking sounds ..She has a bare breast too
She talks to me ...but she doesnt peck me & lets me take eggs
I take her off a nest she eats like a pig then goes right back on.
She wants babies NOW ..its too cold for babies outside
I dont know whether to let her set on a fake egg or just take all the Eggs away ?

CASS - LOove those Egg Snowmen ! what are they using for coal ?

If you let water run it wont freeze ...I dont know if that works for you ?
Hope you get that fixed soon that sounds awful !
Do you have a heating pad ..like you lay on ? You could put that around the pipes in a pinch ..
or Put up layers of Cardboard / blankets / Comforter ? ? anything to insulate it..
I have a old comforter in the coop area to stop the heat from escaping

It takes 21 days to hatch a chick. In this cold, possibly longer (It does in a 'bator, if the temp isn't high enough the whole time). In 21 Days it will be the middle of February. I say let give her 4 and see what happens. The only tried and true way to break a broody is to let her hatch eggs. Any other way annoys the chicken and makes the human nuts.

They are using ..... wait for it.... PEPPERCORNS!!! Isn't that just about as clever an idea you have heard today?

And it was a drain that was frozen. AND it turns out it wasn't actually frozen. It turns out that the person who washes dishes around here doesn't believe in hot water and it was a grease clog in one of the main lines underground. (He [the dishwasher person] had to snake it out and was quite cigrined when the problem was determined)

Morning all! Sun is out but its still cold. Everyone went out this morning. They will be getting a nice warm lunch later when I make my broth again. No waste in this house! Already planning my spring hatch. Ordering some heritage rir eggs and will be hatching some of my own mutt eggs. Have to see how well Bill is doing his job. I really need to get picks of him and Thelma and Louise. Also have to do a few repairs on the empty tractor coop and run to prepare it for the newbies. Warmer weather needed for that job. Would love to bath my silkies but again, warmer weather needed for that job.

Gramma--its that time of winter when the birds of prey seem more numerous. Im glad your guy survived. I have seen a lot of birds of prey lately when going to work.

Cass--Maybe the lesson has been learned? As a teacher, we call that a teachable moment!

Time to be domestic. And fix my mistake. Nothing like thinking you are in the homestretch of a project only to discover that it is wrong and you have to rip out half of what you crocheted. Another teachable moment! and a learning curve!
