NY chicken lover!!!!

hi im alex from the bronx(yes many people keep all kind of things on the down low here, stupid laws with no freedom to have anything cool and nice) and am a quail newbie. i want to connect with local city folk raising quail and similiar birds for fun, food, and education! i wonder if theres local bird clubs around here, cant wait til the weather warms up!
Welcome stormseeker! Glad to have you. You may want to look up some of the quail sites on the forum. You might find some people on there from your neck of the woods.

Lynzi--too bad you are so far away. I have a couple of splash hens and a roo that I hatched out this summer that are really nice. The one hen is already laying and broody. She tried to peck my hand off when I reached in to take her eggs. Little witch was really witchy about it too! I have one pen of blues but they are darker than what you are looking for. I am hoping to cross lines this spring as I am trying for the light blues. Its a hard color to get. Legolas is a splash but he has a lot of the light blue coloring and less white. His offspring (the afformentioned splash) are splashy even though mom was a light blue and the other mom is porcelain. Coloring can be tricky and I am more focused on the physical aspect of my birds.
Where are you located again? I thought for some reason that you were closer to the Albany area...

Welcome! A lot of us here are a couple of hours north of the city. There is another NY thread -

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/534036/southern-ny-dutchess-county-and-below

You might be able to find folks closer to you as well as those who raise quail in that area. But by all means, feel free to join us whenever you please!

We're not all insane here, some are and some just haven't been driven there yet. Get on board we'll take you there.

My turn to chime in.
Jlaw you've already realized that you have a problem. That's a good start, what you do with it is up to you. I can tell you from personal experience that fighting those demons isn't necessarily easy but it can be done. I was drinking a 30 pack every other day until I realized it was a problem. I woke up one day and told the wife I was quiting and did just that. It's been just over 3 years and I truly don't miss it. As Stoney said, the mind is a powerful thing. You need to decide whatswhat's important in life and go from there. Alcoholism is genetic and it runs in my family too. I have no problem with people drinking, it doesn't bother me to be around it, but I understand that some people can't be anywhere near alcohol after quitting. We're all different and deal with things our own way. Enough of that, you'll do the right thing.

As for pellet stoves, we love ours. It's our only source of heat here and is so much cheaper than oil or propane. Pellet stoves don't need the clearances that a wood stove does. There's absolutely no need for you to run chimney pipe all the way up the side of your house. Our chimney is only 6' high and some stoves don't even need that much. We went from over$2000 a year in oil to less than a $1000 a year in pellets.

Good luck.

Jlaw I’m glad you were able to admit your problem. It can be tough and the last thing I want to see is something happen and your kids left without a dad. My first love had a bad addiction and it took him from our son and I one month after our son was born. It really didn’t matter what it was booze, crack, heroin just as long as it was something. This was 11years ago, thinking back I was really young and I was the main bread winner for the family trying to hold it together but it wasn’t happening and it soon fell apart. It was god awful constent court dates taking my money selling my bike when we had no car. This was in New Jersey and moved back to NY after that. I was so young and tried so hard to get him into rehab but it blew up in my face. Needless to say it has been a long hard guilt ridden road to recovery for me and dealing with my son who constantly points out kids and their dads is even harder. Two years ago we lost his mother who was also an addict she was so far gone she never met her grandson and never cared to. We did find his other son a year ago who just got out of rehab and we were able to talk and the two brothers are really happy to have each other in their lives. He is now expecting his first child in march, he has cleaned up quite well still going to meetings and working two jobs to support his family.
So of course you’re a friend and absolutely you have my support! Just give a shout if you need a friend.

Rancher - agreed bartering is super awesome and so is the day before garbage day LOL

Well off to my meeting I’m super excited about this new possible job venture and I’m super nervous.
