NY chicken lover!!!!

I'm with you guys and the snow. It's winter it snows. Seems everyone panics every time time the wx people mention snow. Doesn't anyone have the common sense to have extras on hand at all times?

OTs like people have gotten dumber with all the new technologies we have these days. What do you think they did before radio & tv when they got snow? Just carried on with their daily lives.

To make it chicken related the girls don't mind walking they snow as long as it not as high as the feathers

OMG! Read books! I do need to get me one of those wind up radios. :Plus there are connectors that you can plug in to use your car as a generator. Our van has outlets even in the back. We have the cigarette lighter, and right next to that is an outlet, but where is the ashtray? Newer cars don't have them do they?

I think it becomes a Panic Button for them ..Oh no what happens if ....it SNOWS ..and we CANT ...do ....
I think also they havent prepared for anything
If we lose power ...we could always sleep with the chickens ...it is about 30 degrees inside there with them heating it ...LOL

Everyone should be prepared to totally take care of themselves for a minimum of 2 weeks. (Even FEMA recommends at least 3 days, cuz they KNOW they can't get there that fast) Water, food, alternative heat source, warm clothing and alternative cooking method. (or food that doesn't require cooking) I love winter power outages. OUTDOORS is cold. Put stuff in a cooler to keep it from freezing and you don't have to worry about refridgeration. Now in the summer? Can't sleep when I am too hot, so I guess I should make myself a space in the basement for summer power outages. LOL

Now, I will have to admit that I do not always have 2 weeks worth of chicken food around. HOWEVER if they were predicting a large storm (or any kind) I would immediately go get 200 pounds, so I would not have to even give it a thought for a month. (No, I wouldn't wait til the day before, I would get it the minute they started to say "a storm in coming". It's not like I won't use the food at some point if the storm turns out to be a dud) The same is true of people food. If it is in the house you'll use it sometime, it's not like it is wasted money....you have to eat. And you will eat all you bought at some point before it spoils. (Canned are good for a year past their expiration date, btw)

I have a small fridge in my garage that has eggs inside but is turned off.

We have a freezer...& a pantry with canned foods ...would get low on milk ...can live with out it
I always buy bulk chicken food ..100 pounds min ...
Now if we had no internet for weeks THAT would BE Scary ! LOL
Ditto that. My dd says I talk to you guys to much, but no one here is interested in chickens or stuff like that.

BTW, the new PP has an article on feed. Being from the UK it's interesting the stuff in their feeds. They also highlight different breeds. It's also interesting that some breeds we have here are hard to get over there.

One thing they do say is that breeding and utility has been ruined in some of their breeds. This is one reason I don't cotton to the "English" versions of some breeds like the Orps. Sure they're pretty balls of feathers but that's no good if they don't weigh enough or lay enough eggs to make them worth keeping.

It also mentions Silkies being prone to Mareks. Not sure if that's true here though. They do seem to have a cootie problem over there too.

Morning all. Snow is coming down pretty good. Terrorists refuse to come outside. It was actually quite comfortable in their coop, with the snow on the roof giving it an insulating effect. The black tub is working out just fine for water and the cookie tin heater keeps it from freezing over. If we get the heavy winds later I will have to put the small waterer in Little mans coop as they will go back inside if its really blowing.

I think part of the whole snow panic is that winters have been easy the last few years. When I was growing up on the tug hill plateau, winters were very snowy and cold but life went on. My father used to make my brother and I go out and shovel the driveway before he went to work and sometimes there was two feet of snow in it from the night before. Had to do that before going to school. Schools never closed unless we were in blizzard conditions, We read books and played games is the power went out. I understand about meds but I get people coming in with scripts that were written months ago who suddenly need them filled today because we are getting a storm tomorrow. Or they took their last pill 4 days ago and could I please call their doctor for a refill because they really need it, they cant be without it. No one wants to be proactive or take responsability for their own wellbeing, etc. Thats what kills me. Okay..I will stop now.

Might do some baking and bread making today since I am off. Working on the sweater as well. Got the left side done and now working on the right. I do like how its coming out.

Stay warm everyone.

Luv - I know - I like technology - but something like that really needs a face to face or a call so you can "share" not just talk at with this type of news. it is not just you! There is a loss of bonding and understanding when everything is so removed.

Did you all also realize that Ebay owns Paypal and a few years ago they changed it so you can't accept checks and such - you HAVE to use paypal .... which means ebay takes a cut of the profit and paypal takes a cut of the payment .....

That is why I try to do as much as I can on craigslist ....

(NON CHICKEN RELATED) I have to vent somewhere. I guess that it is a sign of the younger generation..I just found out that my littlest sister just got engaged..I found out on Face Book!...What the hell!.... When my husband and I got engaged yes I waited a week to tell my family, his already knew cause he showed them the ring, but I waited so that I could tell them IN PERSON! Well DH took my mom aside and asked for her permission to marry me. They came walking out of the other room and I got a thumbs up, so then we made the announcement. I would have been happy with a phone call! I talk to my other sister at least 3 times a week, but my littlest sister I'm lucky if I talk to her once a month. She doesn't return my calls and for the most part only calls me when she needs something...I love her and will do everything that I can to help her, but come on..on face book really?
I have that one beat. My son, who is 40ish, texted me Happy Birthday...gssshhh. His birthday is 2 weeks later, so I texted him back...hehehe . Don't know if he got the hint or not.
