NY chicken lover!!!!

I have a hen that doesn't seam right. Her wings are hanging low and she is not moving around normal. Should I remove her? Does anyone have experiance with something like this. I'm worried bc I have baby's coming in a week.

Has she been breeding recently? there was a thread the other day in Turkey talk about the same thing. She had her wings hanging down, seemed odd and was squatting. Turned out it is breeding behavior in that bird. I hope thats all it is. If she isn't sitting eggs maybe move her inside and watch her eating and drinking and inspect the poop.

I would just call City of Syracuse town clerk and she could tell you what is in the ordinance most likely.

I just did...I'm sure they'll keep emailing me but owell. I these guys to go to a good home where they can roam around and forage. Not be penned up all day or confined to a certain small amount of living space.

well if they won't give you a address then pffft on them is my opinion. Probably going to eat them. It sounds like you care what happens to them. Good on you

Oh my cynical is showing...

10 years in rescue and the SPCA taught me a lot about people. I like animals better pretty often.

Ok I need to clarify...I guess I worded that and lacked some info. It wasn't the fact that they were using a kiddie pool. Heck I used a kiddie pool for mine before I made the pond from the water run off. It's the fact that that's all they have me for info. No info about how large their property was, they could have no yard at all. And I would rather see them go to a home with a yard where they can forage rather than be kept in a cage of some sort and let out into a pool. What about a yard!?! Sorry, my last post lacked info...

I agree with you. No address.. no info on nada? bye bye

I hope you find someone really nice nearby to take them.

Actually mine are really happy with just a kiddie pool. We have a seasonal spring wet spot that they love too but they really like their pool. That's not to say you should have sold them to that guy, though! Really shady that he wouldn't tell you where he was and that he kept pushing. Sounds almost like he knows full well he's not supposed to have them and keeps trying anyway.

Sounds to me that he is planning to EAT them. Probably has no idea even that there are different breeds of ducks....and that some are worth eatting and some aren't.

Snake food ? I used to have Guinea pigs. Why do you think they sell mice and rats?

Evening all. Drove home in a snow squall tonight. Couldnt see much beyond my hood. Temp is dropping like a stone. I locked up the silkies and closed up their windows to keep the wind out. The terrorists were all roosting together to keep warm. Got 9 eggs from them today. Plan on setting up the bator tomorrow and firing it up. I will set eggs on sunday. If anyone thinks they might want some mutt chicks come the May picnic, let me know asap so I know how many eggs to hatch. I may have some heritage rir available depending on how these eggs hatch. If you just want hatching eggs, they are rir roo over barred rocks and hatchery reds. The girls will be two in march and are now laying large to extra large eggs. They are also good eating as well.

My silkies were mad I left for work today. They like being able to roam around when I am home. I just want all this ice to melt so I dont have to worry about falling when I am doing chores.

I hope everyone stays warm and safe and their chickens stay well. Ducks too!

Getting sick again...I'm actually beginning to think it's allergies because I started back up with the itchy eyes, congestion and sneezing ever since I set up the brooders this week. They're upstairs in my old office but it's still bothering me. I need some warmer weather ASAP. Can't wait to open up some windows and get outside in the sun!

On another note...I was online a lot today researching DIY coops that were from recycled materials such as the shipping rates, pieces of furniture, etc. I have this broken down crib under my bed still from when we first moved here. I didn't know where else to store it so I left it there. I came across this blog today of someone who made a crib into some sort of bench and got ideas from the first picture they posted. Of course I can't find it now. But I could use the railings and such as my supporters and screw walls to that with windows cut out and doors. I think it was look pretty cool. So I may do that. Even if I still went with the shipping crates, I could use the wood from those or check the Home Depot wood scrap bin. The roof could be curved like that of a hoop coop, but I think that would be trickiest part of all. I'd have to research that part a little more. Even though I have the coop from CC Only, I have a feeling I'm going to eventually have to set up a breeding pen or two when it comes time to getting the eggs from the pairings I want.

First the allergies. I used to suffer really bad. Had testing done, (35 shots) and all that. I now take a pill every day and things are much better. Be aware that some medicines can cause an allergic reaction too. My doc always says well that's only in 1%, and I'm like so who's to say I'm not in that 1%. I'm telling you I'm having a problem here!

Now as far as the crib ? Google around and you'll find plenty of ways to recycle that crib. Many of the older models can't be used or sold since the don't meet the standard. Pinterest is a great place for ideas.

The thought crossed my mind about the gun

I am amazed at how cold hardy they are. At least all three of them are hudled together for all this wind and snow. I tried using the other two to bait them into the run, but for some reason, they were pretty quiet...go figure

Ducks are on my list, but will have to finish my upgrades to the coop before I get them. The creek is at the end of my lawn, so it would be perfect

Then peacocks...then Lady Amherst...Maybe an ostrich ??? LOL

I nearly got Khaki Campbells cuz they lay green eggs and as many as chickens. You could certainly fence off an area of the creek to keep them in. I don't think it's that deep.

Peacocks are nice and noisy I understand.
I was talking with a guy at the Regional market who sells exotic meats and he said he can't get enough Ostrich or Emu. Just don't tell you wife I suggested it or she'll find a gun and shoot me.

It's great to have plans, whether u can make them happen or not. Like the greenhouse attached to chx coop idea. There's always room for improvement with my setup and so often I don't find out what doesn't work until I do it wrong & have to change it. Anything that makes things easier is worth the time, for sure.

It's covered up to the middle cross bar with plastic now to keep the snow out. Other wise it gets to hot and humid. There black tub of water is one of the last to freeze too. I also stack a bale or two of straw inside for them to play on. It faces the morning sun. There is also a door on the back of the coop to add another run.

I have a pair of Khaki's and the 2-3 eggs I got from her last year, before this extreme cold set in, were bright white. Now if I begin getting a green egg then I'll be curious as to where that white one came from
