Just wondering if the guineas ever came down.

I didn't mean to diss guineas earlier. There was a considerable amount of user error on my part when I had them. I drove myself crazy (clearly not a long road) trying to keep them confined enough to be safe yet free enough to be happy. They had lots of free range when I was home, slept in the chicken house at night, and had a 186' electric net fence (over 2500 square feet of fresh grass) when I was at work or school. Not sure if they needed more tree cover than I have, or what. Maybe the need a giant covered aviary, more fencing, more freedom, IDK? They just didn't work out here.

I apologize if I offended any guinea fans. I'm sure in the right setup, they can be great. My friend who was supposed to get my goslings has 5 guineas that she loves and they seem to be very happy over there.

I was wanting runners but black ones cause I like the green sheen on the males. That and because it seems everyone has all the other colors except black. Geese man wife would kill me. I lucked out on the ducks because the kids wanted them also when we went into the store so it was 3 to 1 for the ducks. Glad you got to keep the geese that you fell in love with raising them. They look like they are happy even without a pond.

Last week when the temps got up over 30, I filled a small tub (20ish gal) for the geese. They were so excited they ran around it with their wings out for a few minutes then spent the rest of the day taking turns bathing in the tub. Of course it was frozen solid the next day. Come on spring!

Hi guys! Popping back in to say that our cheapie little coop kit arrived yesterday, as did my Raising Chickens For Dummies book. Having lots of fun reading it. Seems like a nice starter book. We're still not 100% sure where to buy chicks. I would like to have them here in April. So I guess we will end up with whatever seems like the best option the day we go. I found out my neighbor's reddish ones (that I like to watch) are "Golden Comets" not Rhode Island Reds as I had thought. His white ones are Leghorns. They are egg laying machines. He has so many eggs in the summer. We are thinking of getting two of each of those....and then two Barred Rocks. We would keep three to four only, probably 3. Would a Barred Rock get along with the other two? If we only have three is combining breeds of different temperament a problem?

you guys are killin me! I'm trying really hard to not get any waterfowl.... Must... stay .... strong!

I did however get some little chocolate bantam orpington eggs... I really need a 12 step program.

The TSC here had pekins today. I was super tempted, but I managed to resist.
yes we resisted, even with the guy following us around lol, and the looks the ducklings were giving us
love.gif
i only resisted because i really want to hold out for the welshies this year!

Very smart move. Timing is everything sometimes. She might have suspected something was up, but wise to disclose the info when she's in a good mood.

Wish dish towels would work w my husband.

Hello my name is PhoredaBurds and I am a waterfowl addict.
One feather and I am done.
I avoid TSC when they have ducklings as well. Keep telling myself they need a pond and they're messy and I don't have a house for them and....
The geese I have now were supposed to be just brooded for a friend. They were supposed to go live with her and weed her garden. I brought them over there to visit:).

They grew and got loud and more messy, but when they would follow me around telling me about their day... ugh that killed me.
Fortunately my friend who the geese were for adopted a dog that spring. The dog turned out to have special needs and aggression issues. She had her hands full already.

Now I'm thinking adding 4 Africans would round out a nice group of 6 and because they'd probably be happier in a big group.
Or maybe I need ducks. Runners might do well on my property. Oh and those Welsh Harlequins are such pretty birds...

I should probably be medicated.

they are so adorable! and they look soooo happy!
Yea the kids wanted them. I have used that before too. Look kids wouldn't it be awesome if we had those. LOL
yes it is awesome being able to use the kids as my defense for more animals

hey kids it would you like to help me give baby goats bottles

For the most part they all get along hen wise. It's when you bring new birds into a flock that can be a problem. Now what differs from them is them is how skittish they can be. That's not to say you cant and wont have a mean hen that don't like others it can happen in any breed. But some birds like to be around people and others will run/fly from you. My leg horn and my daughters ancona don't like us around. The ancona is so bad she will get out of nest box as I check others and run out the door. Now my reds/golden comet will walk by us as will the barred rocks. There are charts out there that will tell how flighty a birds breed generally is. That's not saying you cant get a bird that is normally flighty and have it calm and use to you. Here is an example of one chart I found googleing it. I use to know of a better one but cant find it now.

I did however get some little chocolate bantam orpington eggs... I really need a 12 step program.

Step 1. set up brooder
Step 2. get keys and start driving
Step 3. Get some food to keep you warm it's cold out there.
Step 4. Stop at TSC
Step 5. Look at all the cute chicks and ducks.
Step 6. Put a 50lbs bag of chick starter in cart.
Step 7. Buy some ducks.
Step 8. bring them home
Step 9. Place them in the brooder
Step 10. Take some pics and videos of them running around all cute like.
Step 11. Upload them to your computer.
Step 12. Upload the pics/video to backyardchickens and then tell us how you caved in and got some ducks

Nice easy 12 step program for you. Stick with it and you cant go wrong. If you need support we are here for you. I'll help support you here you go.
