NY chicken lover!!!!

Ideal did indeed ship my poultry! All arrived today and everyone made it except one polish chick. Another was on the brink of going but I saved it and it was running around the brooder when I left. The gosling is so sweet and cute and already talks to me when I pick her up. It's so adorable, she already stretches her neck out to talk like a big goose. And she'll be the biggest goose I own; bigger than Lacie and the sebastopols, whose eggs I also recieved today, all in good shape. Goslings truly are the cutest, sweetest babies I think. This will be my first time doing goose eggs so wish me luck. I still don't know whether to incubate them vertically or horizontally so if anyone has any advice that would be great. I'm also really happy because I ordered a mystery crested chick and what I recieved is, I believe, a sultan. I hope it's a pullet!

Also some sad news - I found Thistle's daughter, Plum, dead in the coop today. Not a mark on her. She was halfway hidden under the nesting boxes just splayed out on the floor with her feet behind her. I really have no idea what happened there. She was only three, so it wasn't old age or anything, and she was high up on the pecking order and nice and fat, so it isn't likely she was bullied away from food or something else. In fact, she was running around just fine yesterday. I wonder if the sudden drop of temperature overnight got her, but I don't even really think it would be that because she was a very fluffy, very feathery hen. She even had 'leg warmers' - nice feathered legs.

Baking I'll text you about the order. There may be some things I'd like

Sorry to hear Plum ..died ..you just dont know what happened sometimes . At three she could have had something internal go wrong with her ....like with her uterus

I put blucote on Tapestry, but she put more on me. But I washed my clothes immediately pouring Chlorox2 all over the spots, washed up the floor and scrubbed my hands and thought it was good. Then I put some udder balm on her head let her back in the basement coop. She must have enjoyed her familiar solitary digs, cause she put an egg in the box. I found it when I came in after returning her to the coop in the dark. The feed store lady didn't have any nustock, but she said that she uses udder balm in the barn when the horses are chewing on the wood. She thought it must taste bad. So we'll see. Hope all is well in the morning.

Good luck with the foxes, they are magnificent creatures, but also efficient predators, and the chickens have no defenses.

Thats why they call it BLUE COAT .it coats everything . including us !
I put the chicken in the sink ( bathroom usually )and wear cheap silicone ? gloves .
Dow Scrubbing bubbles removes the Blue Coat from the sink , etc spray & let it set for a while .
I Make ithe chicken stand on a newspaper or a garbage bag ...It is REALLY hard to spray them near the head though ... ;(

My chickens are the neighborhood watch !
The chicken alarm went off ...I go Outside looking up for the hawk I have seen twice already today ...no sign of it .
So I look back in our field.. 3 deer just went through ...on their way to the river

My bottle is liquid with a dabber to apply it. I did get it on her head pretty well, coming from behind, but the she shook her head. I seem to have gotten a wattle too, but I have more just on the palm of my let hand than she does. Oh well, I will just keep on washing. There were 8eggs yesterday.

Coop deCuse --- Oh you won't get a show - I'm very good with a rifle .... I would groundhog hunt and pick off the dark speck across an entire field. Standing and free holding this same rifle. Got rabbits and other such little things with the big bang stick.

However, it is where my home is situated that I can't get all excited and just shot on sight. Which is too bad.

I do think fox are lovely - and was hoping the heavy dog scent would keep them off - but as I say - they must be starving right now.

For the head, I spray some on a paper plate and use a -tip to apply. As you can imagine, this is a two person job....but it does get the job done. (and they look so lovely with purple eyebrows or beards. LOL)

You got that right. I wear gloves and nothing I want saved when I use it. I don't know why but it runs down the bottle and everywhere. I don't use it in the house. Only in the coop.

Morning All,
Temps are still looking good for next week. They keep changing a bit but not by too much. Praying my birds can ship!!! I feel like I've been at such a standstill all winter because of this cold. I'm sure I'll be at even more of a standstill when I get them too because I don't believe any are of laying age yet but hey at least I'll have them! Right now I'm trying to research how this sizzle/frizzle/silkie breeding stuff works. I'm really curious to see if breeding a sizzle back to a silkie is a good idea or not or if I just keep the silkies completely separate all together.

My son decided he wanted to stay home from school today. Yesterday he came home and took a nap - NEVER does that happen. So I thought, oh boy, something is wrong. When I got home from dance last night he was playing chess with DH and told me he kept hot and cold when he woke up and his legs hurt, although he seemed fine while telling me all this. Now I'm thinking Flu! This morning I woke him up, he seemed fine but was saying his throat hurt and that kids in class had Strep! So I'm keeping him home with orders to stay in bed and no goofing around.

DH is off today so I think I'm gonna take a ride out and check out some vehicles since the two I emailed that are the furthest the away in Rochester and Albany don't seem to want my business.

When I want something I want it yesterday, I don't have time to sit around and wait.

I usually wait til night and do it in the dark with a head lamp on low so they're not disturbed. I just spray all over hoping to hit the injured spot. They stay blue for month.

It's also good to mark hens who go broody if you have Dels and they all look alike.

If it's a serious wound I use Neosporin and quarantine.

Now to other news.

Lost a chick last night. Got up cuz the furnace is acting up and found the little guy at deaths door. It didn't make it.

Now the furnace is by Charles Heating and only just over a year but past the warranty. Of course! I told the girl on the phone I was not happy that I never get reminders of service, nor did I remember getting a notice that my service agreement was up. She says I did and I honestly don't remember. Still the furnace is just over a year old.

The old one was much older and It would quit every winter when it got cold so we had a new one put in. Fat lot of good that did. This one is working but was making a funny noise and I think the blower or whatever wasn't pushing the heat up.

Ducklings are doing okay but more work since they're so messy. Not sure I made the right decision.
