No duck eggs yet....darn. I see breeding action, but no eggs...how long between breeding starts & eggs begin?

If it is the same as it is with chickens ...the boys are ready before the girls are

Ok taking a poll because I'm itching to start the bator! Here is my bowl of eggs I've been setting aside for the Brinsea (that can only hold 7 eggs if I use the egg turner)

What should I attempt to hatch?

A) 2 splash Silkie eggs, 3 lavender Silkie eggs and two Orp eggs

B) hold out until tomorrow with hopes I get one more splash egg and set the bator with 3 splash silkie eggs and 4 lavender Silkie eggs

Hold out and go with the silkies

I've found ducks lay when they lay. I have 2 of 4 laying now, the other 2 slackers need to pick it up a little.

Hello everyone been a while since I've been in here been so busy. Way too many unread posts so will not pretend to catch up. I can't wait for spring this winter has been way to long and cold with way too much snow. My birds have not been out all winter even though I open their doors not a one of them will venture out in the snow. Plus the only ones laying are the silkies the rest are just being freeloaders right now. The only ones that go out are the ducks they don't care they even swim in this. I know a lot of people up here lost a lot of birds this winter I got lucky and mine did pretty well. We'll hope everyone is doing good and will try to pop in more often.

So glad to have you back! My birds have been going out and now that it is going to be muddy i won't recognize them LOL But they started and insane molt feathers everywhere ugh not many eggs.

Lots of colors going on! be really neat to see how they come out. NO FATALITY! all 20 dayolds born Sunday including 5 one week old chicks made the trip from AZ with ease it appears. It did not even take 48 hours on Express.

Marcy put sliced oranges in the box and crumbles and they devoured those along the way for water and fuel. Great idea! I am so tickled with these babies.
Some of these have some really nice cheek muffs goin on... woot!
I am so tickled I need a nap LOL.
They are so smart, not fearful of me and very healthy.





My little smarty gold one in the middle thinks the Accurite is the best bed.

YAYY Congrats I'm so happy for you! They are cute I can't wait to see more pics of them as they get older and when they start laying.

I definitely want to see you hatch more lavender orps. But that sounds like a good number.

Here's a cute one. The 2 bigger ones are 3wks older than the rest who were hatched last Friday. They take great care of their baby brothers and sisters.

In other news,  how are everyone's girls laying?   I've got to consider cutting back some hens and I'm torn.  I'm just getting too/to/two many eggs these days.  How do I decided.  I will be posting to CL.  Plus I'll be going out of state so the less I have the less DW has to take care of. 

Mine have been laying pretty well here, 11 eggs today from 16 hens. Even got an egg from my EE this week! She hasn't laid since August, but one egg hasn't removed her from the cull list. 7 month hiatus is unacceptable, she just turned 2.

Evening all. A very damp evening with lots of mud. Just locked everyone up. Got 10 eggs again today. Girls are really laying now so Im moving lots of eggs now. Lockdown has started but no pips yet. I am having a brood off with one of the pullets that Lynzi is getting. Little witch tried to take my hand off today when I was reaching under her to check for eggs. I left her with her egg and I have 8 more in my bator so we shall see who does better.

And Thank you so much ! And yes, I got the large fowl. APA doesn't allow the large ones yet, well except for best of breed, your friend must raise the bantams which is something else I want to get into!

Well congrats on the safe arrival.

(I had read not to feed chickens citrus. More "expert" advice disclamined)

Rancher, was it because citrus is bad or that they aren't supposed to like it? Look what they did to the oranges in the shipping box. I think they liked it !
