I would take whatever they are willing to give you. I sift it to get the nails & big chunks out and store it in a large tub. During the drier, warmer months I mix ash with peat moss/ My girls love it. When I run out of ash from the wood stove I burn branches I have in the fire pit outside. When I forgot to leave them ash available they ended up with mites & lice.
Try a litter pan, or a one of those cheap roasting pans from the dollar store to contain it. I found a wreath holder on clearance after Christmas and use that. Its bug enough so several of the girls can dust together.I do give them wood ashes, and they love them, but they spread them all over and not everyone gets a bath. I went to the feed stoe with gloves and a carton to beg the ashes from their stove. The jury is out on what my guys burned in the wood stove at our shop...but it may be ok. I think I will lay down the law on that.
Mine don't get Easter eggers
they are so hard to resist
[CONTENTEMBED=/t/231485/ny-chicken-lover/35220#post_13168370 layout=inline]They sell them as Ameraucanas/Araucanas.[/CONTENTEMBED]

Ask if they can get some ?
a pan of cool dry wood ash will prevent mites and if they do have them kill them. The hens self bath in itIt got rid of mine and the mites have not returned
Does anyone out there use diatomaceous earth to mix in a dust bath for their birds? I give my birds a pan of this mixed w dirt. As far as I know they don't have mites, but it might just be coincidence. Any opinions on DE?
