Morning all. Sun is shining and the randy boys all had to take a little run at me this morning. The tiny tots downstairs are raising you know what in the brooder and some escaped this morning while I was giving them food and fresh water. It need to warm up so I can move them out to the empty coop with a lamp. Candled the 40 in the bator and only had to pull two. The rest look good which means lots of chicks for me. Ordered my bands so I can track my hereitage rir as they grow. Trying to keep good records on the two lines.

Lynzi--I was running about 30 to 40 percent humidity up to day 19 then went to 60 and I still had shrink wrapped chicks. This year is a strange one for me and hatching silkies. I used the same bator (my brinsea) last year and did the same things and had great hatches. Not sure whats up. I am keeping close tabs on the bator this time and am hoping that with it almost full (set 20) that it might make a difference. I still have a broody sitting on 5 eggs and hopefully will get chicks from her. Sometimes you have to help a little when they get stuck like that.

JLaw--You should have no problem finding someone to take your silkies. They are a nice color. What colors are you crossing that you are getting black leakage? You may have to use a different roo if you think its from him.

edit. lol forgot to reply to this. I didn't breed them they are the buff eggs I bought. The roosters are 1/4 or 1/2 red/buff though and seems they took after his red side more than the buff. Or a roo got ahold of a few buff hens. I'm keeping the lighter buffs and the two cuckoos I hatched out though.

As for shipping I could I guess. I've never shipped a bird or had one shipped to me. Are those cuckoo silkies I see!!!! Do you know what they are yet? (male/female). They are very cute.

Yep two and I think one is female I know the other is male he has had a red comb since like 1-2 weeks old. The breeder had a sizzle cuckoo get loose in the cuckoo silkie pen so I got that guy when they hatched out.

Well set up a run for the small coop and put the ducks in it. Nothing major just some chicken wire around some green posts just to keep them in. Hoping the rooster stays out I already had a hen in there but I cant find my deer netting to put on top to keep them out. They love the open space and the bigger water container I have out there for them compared to what they did have.

that egg was sat on for a while. Hidden, buried, something. But that isn't a blood spot, that is development.

Not necessarily. I've had one or two of these without a rooster around. 0% chance of fertilization. It can also be caused by small amounts of bleeding when the egg is forming, usually from a ruptured capillary. It can also be a sign of reproductive problems starting in a production breed hen, especially if she is a bit older. It is disturbing, but harmless for consumption. I would not blame someone if they tossed said egg though.

How cuddly-cute! The coloring and texture of the chick's downy feathers reminds me of a Keeshond dog's fur. I think "Chickadee" would be such a great name, since it's black/gray/white, tiny and adorable! Congrat's on the newest arrival, Lynzi.

(Even though it didn't exactly pop out as easy as the cartoon!)

I had girls lay eggs with the little extra pebbles like that, it comes and goes. I'm not to worried about it.
As for the meat spots, my some of my girls were getting them in the middle of winter, I thought I read someplace that was a Vit. A deficiency. I grate up a few carrots and mix it in with oatmeal so they eat it right away. That usually takes care of the meat spots.

I noticed an increase in the spots over the winter, so possibly a link there... I have tried to feed carrot shavings before and no one seems to want them. I will try again, as it's easy enough to do. Thanks for the feedback!
