NY chicken lover!!!!

Some pictures someone took at the Farm Bureau auction. Don't see myself leaving empty handed, luckily the checkbook's lack of funds will slow me down.

I do like a good auction but figure this one is to far from me. Also sometimes folks bid to high and there is no real savings. Only reason to go is to pay less than what I can pay in the store, right?

Columbian Rock eggs came today. I hope I get as good a hatch as last time. 8 out of 14 would be okay I suppose.

Hello everyone! Sorry I have been so absent lately. For the past two weeks I havn't been working and then finally got a call saying i wasnt needed, so I've been helping out a lot around the house and trying to make some money here and there. I've read threw some of the posts and reading about all of the hatching and incubating stuff makes me want to get a roo so that I can try it!
The 12 that I have are doing awesome, had one indecent with a broken pin feather with one of them but I took care of it and since then they are all growing like weeds, almost time for them to go outside.

I was also naughty today, went to tractor supply and noticed 4 assorted bantams chicks all alone in a big tub, they just looked lonely and scared, so I talked to a guy working there and convinced him to let me take just the 4 home! So now I'm up to 16 chickens, oh boy.

They are soo tiny and cute, and I noticed they even have feathery feet!

Anyone locally (albany/schoharie area) have duck hatching eggs? I have a teacher friend who wants to hatch them in the classroom. Mixed breeds are fine, I'll be taking the ducklings and don't mind lots of color!

Thanks!

I do. Muscovy and Pekin. I just hatched 5 pekin and 2 muscovy. My daughter has been collecting and turning the Pekin eggs and I think she has more than a dozen. Send me a PM to make arrangements if you want them. Muscovies are laying every day as well.

So...........FoxCreek, .when are you going to get a therapist for your addiction??

As you should be. Friendships must be maintained you know.

I was at TSC today and surprised they had more ducks and chicks. I thought they were all through. If you are not on their mailing list you must get on as they're having a great sale.

Good luck on the hatch

I wish I could incubate, there is alot of nice eggs for sale on here!

While it is nice to incubate it is stressful if you've paid for eggs. Plus the time it takes to monitor the incu. If it's your own eggs you might not feel to bad, but if you've paid for eggs then you're sure to.

CR's are nice sized birds and while hatcheries have them they can not compare to this line.

They usually have chicks for 1 week after Easter, so this may be the last of them.
Hubby stopped at TSC (because apparently everyone is sold out of seed starting soil). When I showed him the Auction pics, he admitted to actually considering buying me an incubator! I think morehens has bit him lol
ETA: got 15 eggs from 16 hens today!!!! The one slacker is the EE. She laid a total of 2 eggs this spring, stopped laying last August. Crock pot time. Need a replacement EE.

Repost cuz I still don't know what to do:

~~Help? This is the first year I have had ducks. Muscovies, if it makes a difference in your advice.

I found the first place my duck hen was laying. I picked up the eggs, put a number on it so I could shake up the first ones laid so they don't grow into more ducks than I can handle. Put the eggs back in their spot, but I added a piece of cloth under them, cuz they were laying on bare rocks.

I watched her walk into the barn and walk out a while later. Went to check for egg and write the number 4 on it for...see reason above. No fourth egg. Hmmm... Today I found the SECOND place she is laying. These 2 eggs are much bigger than the first 3 I found. But they are also laying on bare dirt.

What is my question, you may be thinking. I am wondering if handling her eggs caused her to choose a second spot to lay. OR if she wants privacy and will abandon any nest I find her laying in. I don't like where she is laying now. I am going to be hard pressed to make it a safe place for her to sit. I will be able to do it, however I will probably make her nervous and she will abandon THAT nesting site

. So what should I do? Leave her alone and hope that something doesn't eat her while she is sitting on the eggs (when she finally has enough eggs and starts to sit) Or leave her alone and move her when she starts to sit? I know what I would do with a broody hen, but this duck is just accumulating eggs and hasn't truely "gone broody".
