Well finished the corner nest boxes made bigger than planned due to not being deep enough. They are 23.25 in on short sides 33 inlong side. I think like 15 inch from back to frong already had one girl use the top one. Used 2x3s for fronts except bottom is 2x8 but have 2x3s under nest part to raise it some.

Trying to get pics to load not working atm

You're stronger than I am. Now that I have a second hoop coop, I keep reminding myself that I could easily put a second breed in there and keep them separate from my welsh harlequins so that everyone still stays pure...

My birds all free range together, so "pure" is not possible with my set up. Well, it's possible if I only have ONE breed of ducks....which is what I decided to do. However I DID tell my SO (Ray) that I bought them. He wasn't amused. He is out of town right now. I have told him and told him "Don't leave me home alone unless you don't care what I bring home". LOL I backed off and told him the brooder was to heavy for me to move myself, so I didn't buy them. (If he had been home, I probably would have. LOL)

Someone asked about mixing silkies with other breeds. I did it, successfully....Silkies have a MEAN attitude when messed with. (Short man syndrome, I think it's called. LOL) All my silkies got eatten by something...one at a time....probably because they were white and therefore easily spotted from the sky. I won't get more....egg size being the reason...they were all good layers...5 - 6 a week....but just smaller than I wanted to deal with.

Our biggest challenge at the moment is trying to keep the cost of building a coop down. The materials to build a medium sized coop seem to run about $600 - it would be nice to get that cost down. We're going to look into the Amish to see if they'll build one for a reasonable price.. we've been pricing out materials from the Home Depot vs. several different plans and OUCH to the cost! I did see several coops at Tractor Supply, but they are really tiny!

I just wanted to say thank you for all the nice warm welcomes. Yes, this site is full of information and I had no idea how many chicken lovers are in NY, nor how much I myself would come to love them. My husband is starting to call me crazy chicken lady and yet we both just watched Collette and Ricky take a sand bath together in what once was the kids old sand box it was so cute.

Oh Ricky will we ever be able to relax like this once the chicks come?

Well Collette, I am pretty sure we will have to have to have eyes at both ends.

That was me that asked...thanks for answering! I'm particularly concerned because my dominant hen can be nasty towards other chickens. She's fine with two of our other hens, but the runt hen, she terrorizes her. Then again, ALL of the flock terrorize that chicken (poor thing).

You mention the egg size...I know that they lay small eggs..how small? I was thinking the smaller eggs would be a great snack-size for my kids.

We have this same issue and not just with our coop. My husband's garage-worth of tools is currently located in my dining room....which means I do not have a dining room, lol. Its driving both of us nuts, but we just can't swing the $$$$ to put in a decent garage. With our chickens, I really would like to add another coop, but again, the $$$.

Not sure what I did honestly, lol. He does spend alot of time on here reading. It probably helps that he is unemployed and bored at the moment! He is obsessed with Speckled Sussex, anyone have extra chicks or pullets?
I have a big roo.

I've heard that some places have discount lumber bins you could get some lumber from?
