NY chicken lover!!!!

How does the Hoop Coop hold up in high winds?  We have some WICKED winds here.  And because there's a huge farm field across the street from us, the winds whip off of it straight into our property with nothing to slow them down or break them at all.

We've lost two trampolines because of wind...the first during Hurricane Sandy (we had NO idea that could even happen, lol).  And the second was the brand new replacement we had put in last year.  It blew clear across our property, our neighbor's, the road, and into the farm field way the heck across the way.

Hubby repaired it and then reinstalled it with concrete ground anchors.  When he installed our Gorilla swingset, he used concrete footers for that, too...lol.

So a Hoop Coop would have to be able to withstand some nasty winds for us...would hate to see my chickens going all Wizard of Oz on us!

Well we have had gusts of 60+ mph here and it's still standing. The cattle panels are attached to 2x4s plus it has a house door on it. It's heavy but 3 strong people can move it. I have a partial open field behind me and it tends to be a wind tunnel. The covering is not latched on super tight so the wind rattles it but can pass thru.

Morning all. Not looking forward to rain all week. Brats are busy in the coop running from window to door to look out. They hate it when I close up but will have to close the end doors to keep out the rain. Still trying to figure out who my eggs eater is in the terrorist coop. The demand for eggs is outpacing my girls production!

Leah--good find on the used coop. Just make sure you clean it well. Might want to give it a coat of fresh paint or stain as well.

Lynzi---you and I seem to be having the same issues with silkies this year. I am locked down right now and waiting patiently for something to happen. I have two broodys on eggs and things just seem slow this year. I am keeping my fingers crossed for these eggs.

Stay dry everyone.

Well I've got a bit of a mystery on my hands!!!

Overnight, one of my own flock's eggs hatched. Now, I only have one brown layer in my flock...my BR hen. And I only have one rooster...my BR boy. So this brown egg that I set (which had been marked at the time of laying with the date of lay) should definitely have been a BR chick, right? So how come it's a yellow fluff ball? BR chicks are black!

What the heck could have happened?

Back then I did nt know I liked chickens !

Neither did I know that I would want, chickens, dogs, horses, rabbits, geese....

Although I never had anything but a dog as a child, I remember asking my mother why we didn't have a horse....

If you are a country girl, don't marry a city boy...

I love reading about all of your adventures! I wonder who the mystery dad is for the little yellow chick?

We placed an order last night for 2 buff orpingtons and 2 barred rock, plus a Meyer meal maker chick. They should ship the first week of June! I am so excited!

We plan on completely sanitizing the freebie (well, not quite freebie, but close) coop and fixing any problems, then paint or stain it. We're going to take a look at the coop tomorrow night after dinner. Both of my boys want to help fix it up! I am glad my husband is good with tools!
