NY chicken lover!!!!

I have four B. Marans hens on the shipped eggs. 5 each. I switched out eggs they were on and put four in the incu. I like a hen that pecks you hard when you mess with her. It shows she's serious. Only one is like that.

Frenchy is still on hers but I've forgotten when they 're due. She doesn't mind a check now and then. I'll be checking daily from now on.

The incu is day 16.

If anyone ordered chicks from MT Healthy hatcheries this article may interest you:

Please be aware that this is the hatchery that TSC gets their chicks and ducks from.

Also keep in mind that rodents are a carrier of disease and should be dealt with immediately if seen in or around your coop.

Also keep in mind that IS NOT wise to allow chickens to eat mice or other rodents.

Also keep in mind that it is best to keep disinfectant/baby wipes or hand sanitizer near your brooders and hands should be washed immediately after handling chick/ducklings or adult birds.

IMHO every brooder kit should include disinfectant wipes and a warning.

I was wondering about this, as we had purchased several TSC chicks a couple of weeks ago. None of us have gotten sick, however, so hopefully we're good. If the chicks were carrying the virus, would they still be carrying it several weeks later?

Anybody keep Black Australorps?

The four I bought from TSC are several weeks old, now.

One of them is somewhat larger than the others, has a mostly black head, and a tail that is WAY more pronounced than the others. I assume this means its a rooster and the others are pullets? Or do the pullets tend to develop faster meaning its a pullet and the others are likely cockerels?

Quote: This is all I could find ...
Contact with live poultry and their environment can be a source of human Salmonella infections. Live poultry can be carrying Salmonella bacteria but appear healthy and clean and show no signs of illness.
I too got my white rocks from TSC in March ... I have had no problem ..
I do wash my hands after handling them ...its more a poopy thing with me ..

Lately I have been doing some reading about fermenting food and so I was wondering if any of you do this and where you buy your feed. I am still looking to find a local feed mill (Buffalo/Lockport area). I have bought food at Clydes for the starter but would really like to go to a local Mill. Anyone use one in my area?

Hey! I ferment my food & I order my feed from Gramco! I've been looking get people to share my order w because you have to order 80 50# bags to waive the delivery fee (only $25 but still $25!)
My boyfriend works in Williamsville & could meet you there if you're interested... Otherwise we live in batavia or you could just order feed yourself (Gramco is in springville) the feed is good and CHEAP! about $10/bag but price varies week to week. Pm me if you'd like to meet up sometime! :)
