NY chicken lover!!!!

I will take it ! it feels so nice !
I wanted to mention to you ...About Broodys .
Part of the reason they are out of their mind ..is low blood sugar .
( Nurses will tell you .low blood sugar ...brain does not work well. ..Brain & all body systems need some blood sugar to function correctly).
Chickens normally eat all day ...Broodys once or twice a day maybe .?
I hand feed & hand water my broodys ..from a little dish or my hand .
So I know they have some water & nourishment .
My EE is so funny once a day she gets out of the hen house ...
She comes running & jumping out ...Screaming ...At 1st I thought a chicken was pecking her ..chasing her
Today she did it all by herself ...no one was even near her ..So funny ...
Did you mean to quote someone else?
While I appreciate the attempt at a physiology lesson, I don't think the "craziness" is simply low blood sugar. Those are hormones and a very primitive part of their brain telling them to protect that nest.

I was wondering if anyone has water candled in the past and at what day would yield the best results.

Morning all. I took the first five youngsters to their new home yesterday. John, their new owner, is just smitten with them. He built a really nice coop out of an old shed he had and did a good job with security. They will have a huge run and will have the run of the place for freeranging. He already had his chair out there. His wife and daughter were naming them. I will deliver the last 7 pullets in two week. These chickens are going to be spoiled. I got his wife to sign on to BYC as well and invited her to join our thread. Im just glad they are happy with their cheeps.

The little brats couldnt wait to get out this morning. They have recovered from the trauma of me taking 5 of their siblings away. Now I need to work the 4 week olds into that coop. Such a size difference! Its been raining so I couldnt get out to fiddle with some fencing inside to keep them separate for a bit. I banded some of the Fogle kids last night. I need the others to grow a bit more to be sure of who is a boy and who is a girl. Seems like its another year of heavy boys. Guess I will be canning quite a few this year. Once I have established how many pullets I actually have, I will have to decide which hens go in the fall. Im thinking of keeping the barred rocks as their offspring with a rir male are sexlinks and they were easy to sex at hatch. I have time to decide though.

My little silkie chicks look good. They are just the cutest little fluff balls. I am hoping for a good hatch from my blues that I have in the bator. Changing things around in the pens and crossing lines.

Off to the pharm today. Have a good one!

Seems like with broodies it is probably both causes. I have always stuck a small container of food and one of water with in reach of a broody. And we all know what hormones can do.

I ferment food. My fermentation includes kefir whey.

The deep litter is out of the coop, one double nest box has been scrubbed and sprayed, I will put it back in an do the other one. And wash the floor and walls...the girls have been dust bathing, but earl had not been getting into it too much. Finally he found a spot he likes, it is the far side of the veggie garden I am planting. He really needs that comb to heal so he can go back in with everyone. Tonight may be Eprinex night.

it sounds rooish ...how big are the wattles ? & comb ?

They haven't really developed just yet. They're only a few weeks old...maybe three or four?

I compared his comb to the other chick's of the same age and they look about the same to me. *Maybe* a *wee* bit bigger.

Wonder if he's not actually an australorp? The lack of white on the face has me wondering.

Anybody keep Black Australorps?

The four I bought from TSC are several weeks old, now.

One of them is somewhat larger than the others, has a mostly black head, and a tail that is WAY more pronounced than the others. I assume this means its a rooster and the others are pullets? Or do the pullets tend to develop faster meaning its a pullet and the others are likely cockerels?

I had three hens from Ideal Hatchery when I first started with chickens. Not as nice as you can find from a private person.

Last night coming out of church it was pouring. Too, thoughts were for DW and her surgery next week. So I forgot to lock everyone up. I remembered around six with the crowing of the roosters. I got up and looked out the door to see the ducks having a ball in the rain. Chickens of course were out too. All seemed well. I suspect if anything had gotten amiss I would have heard the screaming since the window was open.

Did I mention the big fox dead on the side of Kirkville road? Had it been IN the road I would have run it over again for good measure!

So, I got some eggs shipped to me. Twice. Which means I have boxes with the bubble wrap and filling.

One is a heavy styrofoam container large enough to ship 20 eggs.

Would anyone like these? It seems a shame to throw them away.

Lately I have been doing some reading about fermenting food and so I was wondering if any of you do this and where you buy your feed. I am still looking to find a local feed mill (Buffalo/Lockport area). I have bought food at Clydes for the starter but would really like to go to a local Mill. Anyone use one in my area?

Well I would say my feed mill but I just looked up where Lockport is and your on the wrong side of buffalo to make this one worth it.

Did a google search and came up with this yellow pages listing not sure if you want to call around see what they have to offer. Not sue if they real feed mills or just distributors.

good luck
