If you want to meet people, come to the Finger Lakes Feather Club show Sunday, June 1, at the NY State Fairgrounds Poultry Bldg. 9 to about 2pm. Sales of birds, eggs, auctions, etc. Walk around & see all kinds of breeds. I'll be there with chicks for sale. If enough people come, we could meet up at a certain time...

That may be something that I can go to. I can drop the kids off at my mom's! (she lives just around the corner from the fairgrounds)


DH got home this afternoon. He told me that he had bought a present for me and my babies and that it was on the porch. I figured that it was a toy for the kids.... Wrong babies! He bought me a trap. Some husbands bring their wife roses, not mine I get a live trap. Must be a red neck thing! Our neighbor said that if we catch anything, he'll come and take care of it for us. I think that is a good trade. He gets the pelt I get safe chickens! So lets see what we get!

So tonight at feeding time I noticed that some of the chickens have uneven crops. I read up on this here on BYC and from what I can tell it is likely normal. To be sure I'll pay attention in the morning to make sure it doesn't look like that before they eat. I picked one of them up and the crop felt real solid. This is right after I fed them so I assume that is it just all the food they inhaled almost in a single peck... little eating and pooping machines Emma came to greet me a few times today, I think she will be the friendly chicky

. which is awesome cause she is for stinking cute and for some reason her feathers feel much softer than the meaties feathers. . My ameracaunas are all different looking - i'll get some new pictures this weekend. Olivia is more geyish then orange like the other two. I hope that once the meaties are gone, the egg layers will become less skidish and more friendly.

All you hatching people are making me jealous =). Of course my idea of doing this is more for being self sufficient then breeding for showing but I would still love to try hatching my own replacements next year. If my buff turns broody, I might just get her some tractor supply eggs.

Oh dear - I did not mean to start this lengthy of a discussion =). It seems there are a lot of ways to "skin the cat" or "feed the chicks" for that matter. I have enjoyed reading everyone's comments and ideas/opinions. For now I will try to go without grit since they are outside on the lawn unless I see there is a problem. Thanks Everyone.
When I was feeding the chicks tonight, i got pecked for the fist time (by one of my meaties). It didn't hurt but sure did surprise me.
I feed them every morning and night but I think the fact that he pecked at me means they want more food as one of their dishes was completely empty.
They also were out in the rain today for the first time. The tractor is half covered and they seemed fine and not wet.
I move the tractor twice a day - once in the morning and then again when I come home from work. They poop a lot but I hope the rain will wash it in and my grass will be nicely fertilized. It does smell a bit....my neighbor came over to find out what we were doing - he did not seem to pleased about the chickens. I made sure to tell him that most of them will go to freezer camp in another 8 weeks.
My coop is supposed to get delivered on Sunday . Well enjoy my fellow poultry loving peeps =). Good night!

Lengthy discussions are what I do best.  

My Del rooster/chick has pecked me more than once and the last time left a nasty mark.  I picked him up and almost wrung his neck.  I held him for a bit and held his beak closed and let him know he was in danger of being dead!  Now he won't come near me.  I've never had a mean Del rooster so perhaps it's just foolishness of youth. 
DW said my older BM came at her yesterday when she let them out. He's never come at me. There are a number of hens sitting on eggs or trying to.  One I just keep taking her eggs. I've no room for chicks or more birds. 

You might consider using a hose to wash the poo into the soil after moving the tractor.  I don't see the neighbor being a problem as long as you are legal. Right?  I talked with my neighbors before hand and let them know my intent and that I called the town and that we were legal.

Not all of us show, in fact there's probably only a few on this thread that do. We all hatch for different reasons. Some us have our own little color projects, some for more eggs, some to sell chicks, lots of reasons to hatch. Oh yeah, it's an addiction. I don't think there's a cure for it either

I do hatch for replacement egg layers but to improve the breeds I have. With the exception of my EE's.

Melbu23- not all breeds go broody. However my EE's and B. Marans certainly do. I've got one coop where they are all sitting. Poor rooster is beside himself with loneliness.

Yay, it looks like lots of us are going to show at the fair grounds. I can't wait. I'm hoping to be there by 9 am. The only thing I have to sell is mixed chicks, I've never been to one of these before I'm not sure if they would sell.
