NY chicken lover!!!!

Sorry all I was not trying to say ya'll only hatch for showing. In fact I know you hatch for different reasons as I do ready you posts (as many as possible anyway). I was merely trying to say I would be interested to begin with in replenishing my flock =)

I wont keep a rooster out of courtesy to my neighbored and DH. So I know I can order eggs but can I also borrow "rent" a rooster? just to get some fertil eggs?

There are roosters that are quieter than others. And they crow a lot less if you only have ONE....two or more crow to each other.

I doubt that many people would be interested in "loaning" a rooster....bio-security, ya know. BUT, you could get one free from someone and then give it away after you have made sure your eggs are now fertile. They will remain fertile for approximately a month after the rooster's departure. That should give you plenty of time to collect the ones you want to hatch. If you choose to get an incubator (as opposed to waiting for a broody hen) you could put in a test hatch after a week of owning the roo and know about 3 weeks after you put the rooster with the flock if they job is gettng one by candleing the test eggs. If they ARE fertile put the add on CL to get rid of the roo....own it less than 2 months, have fertile eggs for 3 months. I am sure your neighbor and DH can use ear plugs for 2 months if the noise bothers them. (And actually rooster's crowing is kinda nice to hear)

I love hearing a rooster crow. There's just something so...."country" about it.

Now a freaking mooing cow balling to her calf (housed across the street) all.morning.long...right outside your bedroom window...that gets annoying. Not that I'd have experience with that or anything. Ahem.

I am back. We have a 2009 Chevy Cobalt.  Any one else here have one?

We are waiting to hear about the ingnition recall but there is a noise with the wheels. Sounds real bad.

We used to have 1. Didn't hold up well to being t-boned. I was so angry with DH (after I found out he was ok and) when I got up into the ambulance, the EMT gave me a paper on spousal anger management. DH has had 5 accident in 8 yrs. he's just not a defensive driver. makes me mad thinking about it. So, the answer is no, we don't have a cobalt. It was a nice car.

your biggest chick is it a different color than the rest ?
It hangs with you for safety ...Probably that one will be the tamest as it gets older .
How old are they ? what is your coop set up ...?

They are anywhere between 14 and 18 days old. No, this chick has is the same color as another one. They are still in the brooder right now. The brooder is an extra large dog crate and I let them out to roam the room everyday and give them clods of dirt and grass to pick at and other things to keep them busy every day. I went today to get some pick no more and my local farm store is out of it. :(

If you want to meet people, come to the Finger Lakes Feather Club show Sunday, June 1, at the NY State Fairgrounds Poultry Bldg. 9 to about 2pm. Sales of birds, eggs, auctions, etc. Walk around & see all kinds of breeds. I'll be there with chicks for sale. If enough people come, we could meet up at a certain time...

Sue
I am going to try to be there here's hoping I don't have to work.

Oh so excited about the show Sunday at the fairgrounds! My chicks are 14-18 days old, can I get a few more chicks and put them with them in the brooder? If so, what is the age range I should look for in the new chicks?

Totally off topic of birds but I am looking for some bottle baby or young goats if anyone has or knows of someone selling goats let me know. I have wanted goats forever and I finally talked my hubby into letting me have some.

Mine did it as soon as I gave them dirt ..Mine do it outside . .now ...real hole diggers .

Where you thinking of putting it in a container ...?
When it looks poopy ...
dust bath is in a box inside their coop put fresh sand,DE in weekly never seen them take a bath, They do sleep in it event though they have a roosting bar going on three months. Raccoon problem would spraying urine around the area deter them?
They might not react to sand like they do to dirt . Go out & dig up some dirt & put it in the box ...instead of the sand .
I ve almost always got a instant reaction from even baby chicks who have never seen dirt .

Nutty, there is a goat farm down the road from me. You can find them on facebook its Tricott dairy. If you still have those lav silkies and you do make it to the fairgrounds let me know, I will buy them!
