NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning all. Deliciously cool this morning and the sun is up. Let the silkies out to freerange this morning. Looks like a bath and pedicure for them tomorrow. Got a feeder and waterer from the young man at the feed store. He isnt using them so he passed them on to me. Have to clean them up and put them in the brats coop this morning. My little silkie chicks are looking great and are so darn cute! I have one more hatch to do from eggs Im getting next week and then I am done! Have to get my plants in the ground soon after I get some dirt. Plum tree is hanging in there so I am happy about that.

Little Master Timothy brought carrots to the cheeps yesterday. Apparently his routine every day now is to come over and visit the bawk bawks and babies after his afternoon nap. His mom or nanny brings him over every day to visit with them. He walks all around the coops and runs talking to them and trying to give them stuff (like leaves and twigs). I do believe that boy is going to be a chicken man one day! Actually its kinda nice that they come over even when Im not home because if there was ever anything wrong, I know I would be contacted right away.

Everyone have a good day today. Life is short, live it well!

Nutty! I do know someone! He has been tantalizing us all Spring with adorable pix of baby goats! He is up north, will pm you when I find his number.

Ok thanks glass now I have to get at 3-4 of them for me and the boys.

Nutty, there is a goat farm down the road from me. You can find them on facebook its Tricott dairy. If you still have those lav silkies and you do make it to the fairgrounds let me know, I will buy them!

Will call him today thank you. I don't have any silkies at the moment those and a few others went to a family with little boys that their whole flock was wiped out when they left them in a chicken tractor something ripped the wire apart and killed all the chickens.

I'll be at the show early, cause I am showing some birds......and they have to be cooped in by 9am.

Lets say, if you want to meet up, meet at 11am in the area by the auction. They usually have a few picnic tables around there.

dust bath is in a box inside their coop put fresh sand,DE in weekly never seen them take a bath, They do sleep in it event though they have a roosting bar going on three months. Raccoon problem would spraying urine around the area deter them?
Who's urine? Fox or Coyote might bring them around while keeping Racoons and other things away.

Now everyone who knows me here, knows I'm a big fan of having the men "mark" around the place. Preferably not in the day time and in places where they might be seen.

I reckon you could have them fill a special watering can and the ladies could do it.

I've only had a fox attack once, but I'm not as diligent as I should be. Nothing beats a good secure run.

Sorry all I was not trying to say ya'll only hatch for showing. In fact I know you hatch for different reasons as I do ready you posts (as many as possible anyway). I was merely trying to say I would be interested to begin with in replenishing my flock =)

Rancher - I expect my buff orphington to go broody from time to time based on the description of the breed. The rest of my chickens are less often broody. Poor roo but I am sure the ladies take good care of his when they are around right?

I wont keep a rooster out of courtesy to my neighbored and DH. So I know I can order eggs but can I also borrow "rent" a rooster? just to get some fertil eggs?

I doubt folks would "loan" you a rooster. You might have one given to you and then dispose of him when he is done doing his business. Kind a like in "Harvest Home" the book. I'll let you read it to see what I mean. I never liked the TV movie of it.

Keep in mind you could buy eggs but then you'd have to dispose of any roos chicks. Too getting a rooster would mean crowing for a time. The aren't like dogs or cats or rabbits that once the do the dance things are okay.

You could consider getting a hen who has been with a rooster and likely to lay fertile eggs.

Totally off topic of birds but I am looking for some bottle baby or young goats if anyone has or knows of someone selling goats let me know. I have wanted goats forever and I finally talked my hubby into letting me have some.

If you come to the show why not check other goat folks and see if they can meet you at the chicken show.

Good morning everyone. I finally got a pic of my chicks climbing on my broody gold laced cochin. Every time I try to take a pic they run or she gets up like she's going to try and attack me.Just though I'd share a pic. They are inside still I'm afraid to put them outside I've noticed afew of my birds are being aggressive this year and now some are limping or getting pushed away from the group and food.

They might not react to sand like they do to dirt . Go out & dig up some dirt & put it in the box ...instead of the sand .
I ve almost always got a instant reaction from even baby chicks who have never seen dirt .

I'd suggest some type of organic plant/garden soil if you have a garden. Not one of those Feed kind of things. They have that pelleted feed in it and I worry the chickens might eat it. Perhaps some composted soil or top soil. Not sense diggin a hole, though my girls a have a few around the yard. I try dumping the mower bag grass in them but they just scratch out again.

Crazy birds.

Lately I've been cleaning/digging out the Delaware run each evening and I've got to say that the stuff looks nice and decomposed and dark. I've been building it up for quite some time now. Dumping shavings, hay and straw in there. Just piling it on. I think I may be putting some top soil in there too, from now on. Planning it and working it right one may not need a compost pile.

My runs are covered and the chickens add all the moisture needed I think. I've been dumping it in areas needing filling in and into the compost pile too.

Very nice. She's much prettier than the GLW I got from the hatchery when I first started with chickens.
