NY chicken lover!!!!

Thought I'd share this with y'all. We heard 'bleating' in the woods at 430am - so at 1is light we went to investigate and found this!! She had fallen into the canal and could not get back out. She was very cold, weak and about on her last breath. We fished her out, took her home and warmed her up. no sign of mama,so we took her to the local vet's office. By the time we had got her a bit warmer, she was bleating up a storm!
Feeling very privileged to have held something so small and wild - hope the story has a happy ending....

Wow! That's awesome! What a pretty fawn! We are really close to the city and there was a deer in our backyard last week. Not sure how that happened, everyone has mostly fenced 1/4 to 1/2 acre lots here and busy road out front! Of course my son was so happy to see a "wild animal" that he got his phone out and took some pics. It seems like the deer population is increasing! They are so pretty too. Best of luck with your fawn! I hope it gets better soon! Are you going to look for the mamma deer?

I doubt it - she has probably already left the area and given the fawn up for dead. I'm sure the rehabbers will do their best to return it to the wild. What's really strange tho' is that I have been thinking of doing wildlife rehab recently - perhaps this is a 'sign' ???

Pyxis hatched out some eggs for me - in the mix are 3 of my millie flor D'uccles .....

AND just today momma Millie (I called her Miss Millie and she is the mother of the babies below) has gone broody!!! Go Miss Millie .... I'm leaving 4 LF eggs under her - but she is off the next a fes times a day - so perhaps they won't hatch -but I'm letting her go - I need a broody in the house !!!

My D'uccle is broody to. I gave her 3 of her last eggs One disappeared. Of the 2 left when I attempted my first time of candleing one looked iffy one looked pretty good. I
m going to check them in a few days and with some luck, maybe I'll get 1 to hatch!

Ok thanks glass now I have to get at 3-4 of them for me and the boys.
Will call him today thank you. I don't have any silkies at the moment those and a few others went to a family with little boys that their whole flock was wiped out when they left them in a chicken tractor something ripped the wire apart and killed all the chickens.
lalalalalalala......that is so not what I wanted to read. My chickens are in a tractor and I am afraid something will get in there. Lets hope not!!!

I doubt folks would "loan" you a rooster. You might have one given to you and then dispose of him when he is done doing his business. Kind a like in "Harvest Home" the book. I'll let you read it to see what I mean. I never liked the TV movie of it.

Keep in mind you could buy eggs but then you'd have to dispose of any roos chicks. Too getting a rooster would mean crowing for a time. The aren't like dogs or cats or rabbits that once the do the dance things are okay.

You could consider getting a hen who has been with a rooster and likely to lay fertile eggs.
Yeah i understand - I will likely buy eggs and have soup chicks (roos) I suppose. Now I just have to get the guts to butcher the chickens.....

Well Ella sat and sat and sat all day on those eggs and then got up yesterday evening and was walking around with everyone until I locked up. WTH?!? I figured until I see her sitting every single day I'm not giving them back to her. They're in the bator. Maybe if she decides to stay broody I'll give them to her right near the end. Even this morning she came out with everyone and has been out since. Wonder why she would sit all day yesterday and then not be broody today.

I'm thinking of picking up some Feather Fixer today since Gru is STILL going thru his molt and Stella is growing new feathers on her back. I'm hoping it'll help them come in a little quicker like it did last year. Plus I like the fact that it helps fight against mites. Not that my Orpingtons have ever had them, but the Silkies are more prone to them. Although I was reading about the "mite fighter" on their site yesterday and how it works and that's not really what I need it to do. LOL If they've ever gotten mites they've been in the crest feathers, not around the vents and that's basically how this helps prevent it:

How does Mite-Fighter

technology work?

  • Mite-Fighter
    2122.png
is a natural, proprietary ingredient that is not a chemical or a drug.
  • The Mite-Fighter
    2122.png
ingredient passes through the digestive system of the chicken and is excreted in the feces, making the area around the vent inhospitable for mites and helping to deter mite infestations.
  • The Mite-Fighter

ingredient has no effect on rate of lay, egg quality, egg safety for consumption, or meat quality

So who knows. Guess I'll try it out and see where it gets me this year.
I pretty much know if a hen is broody cuz she bites. Except for poor Frenchy. She lets me check and pet her. She's so sweet. Buckwheat is the same way. Get a couple of Cochin/Cochinfrizzle hens and I bet you have more than enough broodies.

Well, upon inspection I found mites on my silkies. Not a lot but I figured the wet weather would bring them on and they did. That and all the wild birds around here. Grabbed the can of dust and went to town on everyone. Plucked out any feathers that looked like they had clumps on them and dusted the crap out of vents, cushions, hackles and crests, including the sitting mommas. Dusted the insides of the coops and the runs. Watched the boys shake and be enveloped in a cloud of dust. Means an inspection every day until the war is won. I dusted inside the big run of the terrorists where they like to dig and dust. Preventative measures as my inspection proved fruitless.

Jlaw--- I suggest you put out a few feeding and watering stations. If you have some birds that are coming up injured and/or pushed out of your current stations, it means you need more so that the lowest in the pecking order can grab some grub and drink while the others are busy at their favorite eatery. I have had to do that with the terrorists from time to time because I have some girls who can be real bullys. Just a suggestion. Nice pic of momma with the babies! Nothing beats a broody for hatching and raising chicks!

Off to sling the java. Hopefully the frap brats wont be in tonight. Bawk on peeps!

Well I did have a friend recently call cuz they had a duckling that the crows were after. They live near a lake but not real close. Anyhow it was good to have a rescue. I sure wasn't about to get into it and told them to call the rescue. Duckings are cute but very messy.

If you were nearby I'd give you eggs. But I wouldn't take back any rooster chicks.
