NY chicken lover!!!!

I doubt it - she has probably already left the area and given the fawn up for dead.  I'm sure the rehabbers will do their best to return it to the wild. What's really strange tho' is that I have been thinking of doing wildlife rehab recently - perhaps this is a 'sign' ???

First of all, what an amazing thing! Bless your heart for doing all your doing for that little baby. I don't think there are any coincidences. When you say you've been thinking of doing wildlife rescue and then God(or insert your own HP here) puts this in your path....you are most definitely being given the green light and the maybe the final umph to go and pursue!!!

I'm only letting them sit for replacements and to pick the best to breed, but will I be able to care for a bunch and care for DW?  I just don't know.

If I'm going out of my mind, what must she be going through?  :barnie

Rancher, I feel qualified to answer here so forgive me if you don't. Be sure that getting rid of your hobby is what you really want to do. Caregivers are lost in the shuffle. The person with the illness is usually getting the very best care and support while we sit by and wonder what more we can do for them. Everyone In our situation stood up and said they would do whatever they could but when they were really needed, they were unavailable. Not 1 of my mothers friends stopped by the hospital to visit for the 2 mo she was in there. My point, you are the one that will need a little alone time, or someone to talk to, 1 hr to do something that you enjoy. I hated getting up an extra hour early in the cold to care for my chickens before going to sit with my mother all day but now I'm glad I did. Plus, chickens are good listeners. You have to do what you feel is best for you, today I'm sending you a huge hug. Prayers, sue

I agree with Sally8 - but maybe cut down on your numbers - have just one coop and that one not filled to the gills - meaning not only this health issue - but remember how you were growling in the winter ..... So no more chicks

and pick 5-10 of your favs and settled down with that - then add maybe 2-3 chicks per year and build up if you want - or hold steady.

But the main thing is to really take care of yourself - eat well - stay as happy as you can - really indulge yourself so that you have a reserve of energy when you need it.

Morning all. Took a nasty spill yesterday before work then worked till 930 last night and my knee isnt sure what it wants to do. Thank goodness I had a trainee last night as he ended up doing almost everything as I had to keep sitting down. Doing my best to stay off it today and see if it gets better. I was able to hobble out this morning (slowly) and let the cheeps out. The new feeder and waterer in the brats/monsters coop is working out great. Found an egg in the run in Legolas coop this morning that wasnt there last night. Looks like one that Eowyn had been sitting on as she is down to 4 now. I wonder if she kicked it out yesterday while I was gone and it got knocked out into the run. I tossed it. My other broody silkies are sitting on 5 eggs each. Hopefully they all hatch.

Rancher--I know this whole thing with DW has you stressed to the max. Its always the "what ifs" that drive us crazy. Take your ques from DW. Before you make any decisions about your birds, you should talk it over with your wife. They may be an important part of her life that is helping her to deal with what she is going through even if she isnt directly involved with them on a daily basis. It is also obvious to me that even though you complain about how hard it is to keep up with them, they are a great stress buster for you. It may cause dw more stress to know that you have given up your birds because of her. Just my two cents worth having been down this road already, though not to the extent your dw has.

Off to get the knee checked out. Enjoy the day!

So Since I finished reading posts here I started reading the facebook BYC threads. Someone there posed this video.

what are all your thoughts on this?

Doesn't seem right to me but I know too little to judge.

PS: rancher - you rule =)
I had heard of these but never seen one put to use, that is interesting. Actually I know of someone in CT who bought these for the few roosters he owns. He has neighbors close by to his farm and doesn't want the roosters to become a nuisance so he got these. I saw him post on FB however that they weren't working and his roosters were still crowing. He had asked if anyone else had the same issues. I don't think anyone else has tried them though. Maybe his wasn't placed on the rooster properly? Who knows. I don't know how I feel about them. I mean the rooster sounds like he's choking or gasping for breath when he crows so it SOUNDS a little inhumane, but on the flipside, the rooster is obviously walking about just fine, eating, drinking, breathing, still mating with the hens. So how badly can it be bothering him? I guess it all depends on how much the crowing really bothers you (and it REALLY bothers me considering I live in a valley and everything echos around here) and how much you really like your roosters.

x2 Rancher, Talk to your wife about any thoughts you are having about your birds and her health. Like Pharm said, it could stress her out even more if you got rid a good number because of her health. You have to think positive, the more you worry, the more stress is causes. They do great things now a days to treat this type of cancer. I've known many people in my life to go thru it and they all had awesome outcomes. Heck, the kids' grandmother that I used to babysit for had it TWICE in her life and made full recoveries both times AND the woman is still alive in her 90's! The stronger you both are about the situation, the better off you're both going to be. Don't make any rash decisions until you absolutely HAVE to.

Well my two sizzles are definitely boys and someone has to go. It's going to be the smooth splash since I have no one to pair him with. I caught my frizzled sizzle mating with one of the silkies this morning. I'm not purchasing anymore birds as far as this sizzle project goes. Hopefully whatever hatches from these 6 eggs in the bator will grow out nicely and I'll have some hens for next year. This year my focus will just be on the Orps and the Silkies.

Pharm ~ Hope that knee gets better and you're able to keep it easy the next few days!

I agree with Pharm and lynzi, Rancher don't forget to take care of yourself as well

Can you post a pic of the roo you are parting with? I'm not sure if my blue silkie roo is doing his job. Out of 4 eggs I put in the incubator they were all clear! I have never seen him actually breed.
