NY chicken lover!!!!

We sat with the chicks the entire time they were outside, and made sure they didn't run off. they were a week old yesterday, and today one of them jumped on to the top of their brooder, which is over a foot tall. Needless to say we put the screen on earlier than expected to keep the ladies where they are supposed to be.

Here are our stacked brooders. 21 in top and 19 in bottom. They're about 3x6.To the left is the bulk tank that runs through the wall. If we were still milking cows the milk inspector would not be pleased. We stopped in 2009 with no desire to milk again. I did know a farmer whose chickens went in the milkhouse and sat right on the bulk tank with milk in it. He didn't win any quality awards

Hi all!! New to BYC and chickens!! Always owned ducks and Geese. Last year sold all my muscovies before winter, my females were so broody we had hatchlings everywhere!! Two/three batches of 20/25 a summer per female. I was over ran by muscovies!! Lol As much as I loved them it was very overwhelming!.
This year we decided on trying our hand at chickens and a few weeks ago bought 12 chicks of varying ages and breeds.. (3) red cross (3) Australorps (3) Amercaunas and (3)!light brahmas they are all pullets 2 months and under. All growing well, quite the characters and I love watching them!
We live in Pulaski Ny between watertown and Syracuse and its great to know that there are other chicken folks in NY! Im looking forward to getting to know some of you!

Welcome to the coop.

Welcome, Hugz! I'm in Mexico! Its nice to have more Oswego County folk here!
I was so tired last night I forgot to shut my coops! Luckily everyone is still accounted for! Sold 15 guinea keets and 11 mixed chicks yesterday. Now I have lots more brooder space ;) my 2 dozen eggs from chicken stock go into lock down today so that make more room in my incubator! Just need to get my hands on a couple dozen eggs to put in it :p I'm crazy I know!!

Thank you all for the wonderful welcome!!
I will take some pictures very soon!!
I just put my first group of " older" ladies outside in the fence for the first time today and they are loving it! The other smaller girls are enjoying their bigger space to play..:) hoping in another 2 weeks they can go out too. Not sure why I didn't have chickens before now, sure do love my ladies.. :)

Wow! You have your handsful!! I thought taking on all my muscovies was alot!!

Just the run off the small coop. We should have opened the door to it and let them in and collected them that way. Wife said they went in big coop fine last night but late like ya'll said.

Man my house smells bad. I had an egg explode in the incubator. I don't know what happened to this thing it shouldn't have been more than say 13 days old at most. At first I thought a dog pooped upstairs when I couldn't find anything I went down and was walking around until I noticed it was mainly by my bator. This is not fun I cant get the smell out of the house.

Well today was another exciting day with the peeps! They are just over 2 weeks old and I can't believe how fast they are growing. Most of them are starting to like me. I've been taking them out to play in the yard and they follow me like little ducklings.

Nice to see so many upstaters here! I'm in Geneva, between Rochester and Syracuse.

My chicks flipped out over yogurt this morning!

Hi neighbor! I live in Potter/Middlesex, about 20 minutes from Geneva. My girls love yoghurt. On cold days, I mix some yoghurt in with oatmeal.....guaranteed food fight with flying oatmeal all round!

Oatmeal and yogurt, thats interesting, im adding them to my ever growing chicken food list. Who would of thought they could eat so much!! I just love this site!! Wish I found it when I had my ducks and geese.
I forgot to mention above that I have a "stray" chicken hiding out in my pines by my coop. My neighbors started with chickens last year, they buy grown already laying hens, lost some this winter so went to a poultry farm a week or so again and got 8 more. 2 flew the coop right away. They thought they both got eaten, heavy predator area. A few days ago while out tending to my ladies my daughter and I spotted one of them hiding out on a low hanging branch. We gave her some chick starter and fresh bowl of water and left her be. I let the neighbor no she was here, after a few days of feeding her I offered to keep her. They ok'd it. I put out a dog house with hay so she has someplace to go at night, I give her feed twice a day and Ive been trying to win her over with treats to gain her trust, so far no luck. She will wander by the coop getting the babies chirping away and Ive noticed her walking around the pen like she wants in but when I go out she scatters away. My chickens will not be free range because of the predators and the road we live on. It is very important to me to catch her before winter. So if anyone has any ideas i appreciate them. From what I can tell from pictures on the internet. She is either a white plymouth rock or a white giant jersey. She is a little rough looking though, she is a large brown egg layer according to my neighbor.

I hope that you guys in Delanson are okay! Hope and pray that it wasn't your house that was destroyed, or your families.
ethe tornado hit right around the corner from me. My daughters BFF lost her roof and window of her bedroom. She wasn't home. It's been a crazy couple weeks. I have lost 8 of my juvie birds to a hawk. Even whith ppl in the yard. I'm in the middle of building a covered run. Just now a hawk came after my adult SF I chased it with a rock and stick. Idk what to do. Can I shoot a hawk? Red tailed hawk. Or what are my options. This is every couple days for the past two weeks.
