this ones really got a hold of that bottle .

He says he is going to tell Dad tomorrow ..we will see ...if he does ..

Could you trim the feathers around their eyes ...I dont know how they could see a hawk ..

Oh no! These feathers are finally getting fuller there's no way I'd trim them. We don't really have a hawk problem around here with all the crows we have. I'm not really worried about these 3. When I say they are smart, I mean like they are smarter than any other chicken I own. They know their place here, they know who to stay away from and who tolerates them. They stay in the tall grass and very rarely wander in the middle of the yard. They nap up high in the afternoon, on top of coops! Lol They're just really cool birds.

Morning all. Dh and I were up till midnight with a visitor. He was big (150-200 lbs) and black and dumb. Dogs in the neighborhood were going nuts so I told dh. He went out and looked the first time and saw nothing . The second time he caught eyes with the flashlight so he came back in and got his shotgun and went back out. Sure enough, there was a big bear in the woods just beyond my silkie coops. We yelled at him and then dh walked towards him yelling at him to get out of here. The bear woofed a lot and snapped his jaws together then climbed a pine tree. Continued to woof and snap. He was clearly scared. Went back inside and when I heard him climbing back down I told dh. He went back out and made the same approach again. Bear goes back up the tree instead of running away (dummy). Heard him come back down again about half an hour later. Dh went out again and the bear had left. Hopefully his experience was negative enough that he wont be by again for a while. He got no reward and was scared enough to climb a tree twice to get away from the threat. Hadnt seen him in a while. If you have never heard a bear woof and snap its jaws together, it is something to respect, thats for sure. I looked around the coops this morning to see if there were any prints but found none. Of course the cheeps were oblivious to the whole thing. Times like this are when I miss our dog as he was always the first to let us know when a bear was around. He would chase them off as well.

Another beautiful day today. I will be wasting it at work. I hope some of you get to enjoy it!

No offense taken ...suggestions are always welcome ..

Desiree - so sorry you lost so many chicks ...
Youve got to let it know it isnt welcome .
A covered run should help
We have Hawks & Eagles ...saw some small birds chasing one of the eagles today .
I have heard of putting up things that blow in the wind ...wind socks or flags .
put mirrors out facing up ...it will reflect ..they wont be able to see as good.
only let them out when you are with them .
You might be able to fire a BB gun at the ground to scare them .
Have a rake near you for defense
you cant kill them ...only deter them ..

Technically "harrassment " (hitting them with a rake) is not allowed either. But then who is going to see what you do in your own yard? SSS, ya know.

Cass have you experimented with the bread yet and not given your birds any on Friday to see if you get eggs on Saturday & Sunday? It was you who brought the whole bread thing up right?
