NY chicken lover!!!!

Does it hurt to get bit by a full grown chicken? Do they break the skin or just leave a bruise? Just wondering because I just got my toe pecked pretty hard for them still being small. Owie.

Chicks peck because they are curious .If you let them know it hurts they usually wont do it more them once or twice .
full grown chickens generally wont peck you .
The exception is A Mean Roo or a Broody Hen ...they both can peck hard & break skin / pinch skin .

What is it about having chickens that makes you want... more chickens? I feel like my 3 girlies (and lets hope they're all girlies) aren't nearly enough...
you should definitely head over to natureberry farms, they have a website, great people, you will definitely find some more chickens! welcome to BYC

Morning all. Eight silkie eggs made it to lockdown this morning. Need lots of good hatching karma from all of you. So hoping they all hatch. This has not been a good year for me hatching silkies and I really need these for my breeding program. In other news, I went to open the pop door this morning on the brats/monsters coop and one of the mutt red brat boys grabs the back of my hand. I grabbed the back of his head so fast. He screamed bloody murder and then ran out the door when I released him. I have noticed that the mutt boys are much more aggressive. Their father, Bill, was not but I suspect that they get this trait from their mothers. I have a few terrorists (hatchery reds) that are dominate and somewhat aggressive towards their flockmates when they want to be. They dont do that with me but I have seen that behaviour towards others in their group, especially the lowest ranking hens, Thelma and Louise. No matter, they will be going to canning camp, along with their moms once the pullets start laying. I am undecided about the one rir pullet that is quite dominate. Her tail points downwards (a genetic thing I think) so I will not use her in my breeding program. Will have to wait to see how well she lays eggs.

On a happy note, my plants are all still alive although my tomato plants look a little funky. For me this is a record as I usually kill everything in short order. I am trying to do better this year and check them daily. Having no rain the last few days with sun has helped. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Kinmera--my appologies to you. I meant no offense.

The hawk is by, screetching. She comes every day looking for a free meal. Not going to happen on my watch. Off to the pharm. Enjoy the beautiful day everyone.

Oh sweety, I took no offense =)

I keep chanting that mantra in my head so I don't go too chicken crazy (or have the DH out there going crazy too). There's so many breeds and colors out there I would have some of everything if I didn't

.

The ironic part is.... I got a call from the local crop share late last night. They wanted to know if I would be willing to supply eggs for them as their current supplier is getting out of the business. So my 'fillers' may be around longer than originally intended because they want 10 doz eggs a week minimum. Time to start bribing the protesters into laying again

I wonder if I can get DH to build me 2 more 10x10 coops by winter.........

Morning all!
I got three eggs yesterday from my silkies so all 3 are laying! Woohoo!!! AND they all lay a slightly different egg so I can tell who's eggs belong to who. There were only two developing in the incubator so I removed 5 and placed 5 newer dated ones in it. When the 2 growing ones hit lockdown I'll put them in my other incubator. Hope this works. I'll have MY first generation sizzles if any hatch!!

:) thank you! I was just thinking about making a trip out there one day soon. Or, if the local farmer's market I'm volunteering for can get them, I'd love to have them come out and vend for us some weekend! (Not for purely selfish reasons, I swear...)

Got up early this morning and opened the girls' cage out on the front porch, they all hopped out to run amok while I cleaned things out and refilled their feed and water. Silly girls. Sadly, I have so much to do today that they aren't going to get much (if any) outside time - but I'll make up for it tomorrow. Can't WAIT til I get my coop built ... hopefully in the next week or two.

Dogs are fed, cats are fed, 11 year old is off to his second-to-last day of school.. laundry and coffee time for this mama, before I have to run errands.

Beautiful morning here!
Scraped my run yesterday, (will take a pic soon, sorry) today I cleaned the coop. Wanda decided to help me fluff the pine. Lovely hen she is.,:) Singing the whole time. I guess its her way of thanking me for "taking her in". She has been laying me an egg every day. :)
The other girls are getting big, not so babies anymore. The austrolorps are definitely the bullies in the flock, always needing to be first.. Reminds me of a bunch of preschoolers who have a bad case of "mines".. Im glad I only have 3.
Hope everyone has a great day.
