My goats are all doing great actually am going to get another doe which will put me up to 7 goats. Now the next thing I want is sheep.

We'll off to bed tomorrow I have to do the nurse thing so have to get up early

Morning all! Hot and humid already. Asked dh to put the ac;s in the windows as its supposed to be ugly all week. Cheeps had a nice day out yesterday. They wont be happy locked up today. Had to put a lower watt bulb in the brooder for the new babies as it was getting to warm in there. Think Im down to 60 watts now and they are 3 days old. Looks like I have a few silkie boys in the older group. Putting away my bators until next year. I finally have the sweater 99 percent done! Just have to do one round around the collar and put some buttons on it and Im done! Go me! Its been a real learning experience, teaching myself how to do this. Only had to rip out a few times and discovered I was putting the sleeve in wrong about halfway through. Who says an old dog cant learn new tricks? Back to work today. It was nice having four days off in a row. Good for the mind and body.

Sorry to hear of everyones losses. We have been very fortunate so far in the 4 years we have had chickens. No attacks yet. I say yet because it is inevitable that at some point something will try. The law of averages says so.

Have a good day everyone!

Frita: White leghorns are the leading commercial egg laying breed, they are the best egg layers there are. They rarely brood, lay like champs and don't eat alot.

Finally got a few trails hand-mowed yesterday. So hot/humid I thought I was going to die!

Weeded out some of the veggie beds, had a nice crop of Jimson weed growing there.... today is barn clean-up. At least it's cooler in there than outside. For those folks who love this heat & humidity - forgive me, but I'm dreaming of snowflakes!!

Boskelli1571 - TIMES TWO

I was stacking hay - So tired my legs are shaking and I'm wobbling .... I'd lie down in snow right now and be perfectly happy.

Thank heavens I do all the haying for the entire winter at one time (well it is 3 days of torture - but all at once)

I think I am going to loose some to a summer storm this afternoon - but can only limp so fast & then have to take a break. Then do more ....I have 2/3 of the last wagon left to unload ... and one errand I can't put off ... so it is a race this afternoon.... race, limp, rest ... repeat.

Where's my aspirin ????

Horsekeeper -I'm sorry for your loss. :(

Rancher Hicks - Can you keep all the broody's together, or will they fight? I have zero experience with broody hens... I wouldn't know what to do if I were in your shoes. Keep us posted!

I have a lead on a few free white leghorn pullets - does anyone else have these? Are they decent layers? They're about a month older than my girls, so not sure how well they'll integrate. Not picking them up 'til after I get the coop finished next weekend, maybe that will help - no one will feel like the coop is "theirs".

Also, more and more worried that Waffles is a 'roo. :/ Can't have roo's here. My son is going to be heartbroken if we have to find a place for him. I promised him an "Easter Egg" chicken if we can't keep Waffles. I guess I'd better start looking for EE pullets, and hope that it helps with the sting of losing his chick.

Tomorrow, planting a mini rosebush I received as a housewarming gift, and transplanting some sage. Cleaning, and taking my pregnant calico up to the vet for a checkup.

I hope everyone had a good weekend. :)

I have one white leghorn laying hen, age unknown.. She flew "the coop" from the neighbors and fell in love with my baby flock and has (with the neighbors blessings, we love our neighbors) been a wonderful part of our chicken family. "Wanda" lays us a large white egg every day, sings while doing it. Is mother hen to my flock, she lets them eat, drink, and go in and out of the coop first.. She even tried.."sitting on one of my red sex links" lol.. she also likes to help fluff up the fresh pine in the coop. She a great hen. :) However, she doesnt like to be handled at all, the neighbors call theirs " crazy" ( cuz they are super skittish) I think its because of where they came from. If you start handling them while young, like any animal they will be fine.

I lost my first chicken to a predator today.  Probably a fox or coyote.  There's just a pile of white feathers down by the horse paddock.  No blood or body parts and one of the pretty white EEs I got from Tab and Travis a couple of years ago is missing.  It's under the trees so I don't believe it was a hawk.  The flock has been alarming for weeks over anything they see, so I didn't pay much attention today when they started in.  Sometimes one of the hens starts screaming because her favorite nest place is taken and then they all get going.

I wondered why they panicked and darted under the bushes by the house when I walked down to check on the young ones I put outside yesterday.  On hot days like this they hang out under the bamboo beside the house and just look at me when I walk by.  Usually there is a group dust bathing or sunning along the path and a few follow along to see if there is anything good to eat.  Today they were all hidden and peeking out at me.  They didn't make a sound, just a lot of rustling as they charged deeper into the bushes.  I hope they stay freaked out and stop wandering down the hill where I can't keep an eye on them.

So sorry..:(

Cool Light We have a flood light on the back of the house I can turn on & a Motion detector on the front of the coop & the front of the shed ( they are back to back to each other )
I have seen cats & opossums walk through at night

Gotta have a light out there, or I stumble on my way to check things after dark! Flashlight is OK, but never seems to be where I thought I left it. Neat to have a motion sensor one, too, Gramma.

Well...I know it's early, but I ended up integrating my flock today............

Hopefully they continue to behave themselves!

I hope everyone adapts quickly and easily, too! Good luck!

You should post a pic, Pharm -- I'd love to see the completed project!

Poor Metlla!!!! UGH..........stacking hay in the heat: itchy, sweaty, exhausting chore! Drink tons of water.

And Boskelli....please don't mention snowflakes again until October! haha. (Although I also despise the heat and humidity. It's the worst, especially with hot flashes. Double nasty!)

Where's that ice cold gin and tonic with a twist of lime?

I bought this motion activated flood light at Home Depot. It's solar powered and works great. I don't need a flashlight to walk to the coop anymore. It only turns on dusk to dawn also
