NY chicken lover!!!!

Ok so the chicks have to go out to the coop this week. How should I get the coop ready? I haven't built the roost yet do I start them off on a low roost or just build the permanent higher roost?
Low Roost or Low Roost with gradual higher roosts behind ...depends on what you have time / supplies for .
When they get older you can give them a higher roost . I believe 18 inches is the recommended highest height .

Your 1st Picture ! WHHO HOOO ! it kind of looks like a bird statue there or a yard ornament !
Wouldnt it be cool if it put a nest there ?

It might be cool if there were 2 of them so the nest would mean little Blue Herons. But if it is just going to come into my yard and give my chickens cooties, it can move on down the road, tyvm.

We don't see that bird around here much....not much for them to eat....no fish in that pond, just frogs. LOTS of frogs, but that is going to get boring after a while, I would imagine. It does look a statue sitting there.....When it flew over I thought it was a hawk, the shadow was so big. LOL

I don't have time to catch up on the posts.

We have mulch hay (not good for animal feed, old with weed stalks) if anyone is interested come and get it its free. We have pekin ducks for sale $10 each and some free roosters. Maybe a few pullets for sale, waiting to hear back from my aunt first.

Yesterday was the state fair, today is solar panels, tomorrow play date and kindergarten open house, next weekend family reunion and a wedding then school starts. Phew what a mad dash!
Hope everyone is doing good.

Solar panels ?? sounds interesting

I'm so behind on reading threads again but this past week end realized how badly we have mites. So, started dusting, marked each leg with a zip strip, each time using a different color so know which ones to grab 7 days later. I hate mites!! Everything is so wet from frequent rains and probably doesn't help.

BTW....My mother passed away this morning. She had lymphoma and kicked that but has had several heart attacks along with difficulty in breathing. She couldn't kick the last heart attack. I will miss her so much.

I'm so sorry about your mom. I hope that it gives you comfort knowing that we are all here for you.

Been trying to read up at night before I head to bed. Have been working at the fair like crazy. Today we were SUPER busy which is good. I have managed to check out the birds on my way back to the car. They seem in much better shape then they were last year. Wish that they had a few more different breeds. The tie-died silkies are a big draw as always. They have a sign that they are for sale. I over heard a guy tell his little kid that wouldn't it be cool to have a chicken that color. And he wondered what other colors chickens came in...I had to laugh then burst his bubble when I told him that they are colored that way and after the stuff wore off that they are most likely just white..to which he told me that I was wrong, he sees them every year different colors...so I just shook my head and walked away...They are over priced anyway..I forgot how much they were, but I remember it being more then I would have thought...

Can't wait to get some time off. My feathered babies are getting jealous that I haven't had much time with them in the last week.

Hope that everyone else is well...Just skimmed to catch up...

Sally8 so sorry to hear of your Mom's death. She certainly had fought the good fight, and I bet she stayed as long as she could. Be gentle with yourself, grief is tough.

The chicks have been growing up, two have turned two months old, and the oldest gave a sort of a honk tonight instead of her usual peep. They have all been showing that they are unhappy with their lodging, so tonight I set up the lower roost and set each one on it at dusk. The big girls and Earl had all gone back to their adult roosts and only muttered a little at the invasion. The broody was giving me fits about returning to her egg after her morning break. This morning I left it to her, she is down to one egg, so it is unlikely to make it the next week to hatching day, and if it does it would be a poor lone chick. I am leaving the door open and not babysitting anymore during her extended breaks.

Sorry I'm a few days behind here been trying to catch up. But with Roller Derby tryouts/boot camp soon I've not only been running my normal 5 miles but doing a ton more exercises and relearning to skate again. In addition been doing my photography and getting my small business up and going along with my regular dog n cat grooming. We also been doing more dog training, and we have been working on another chicken farm as well.

Nothing this morning right but when we got home tonight and my son went to lock up there was chirping so he yelled for me! So far we see 5 chicks!! Not sure how many eggs she was sitting on. So we also did the math that she had been broody a week earlier than we had originally thought. Our calculations said next week was the hatch LOL. Oops she had been sitting on eggs for a little over a week without proper protection sneaky little girl.
