NY chicken lover!!!!

For my town - that means allows someone who ... for instance ... has sheep, open a fabric or yarn shop on their premises ... Or someone who grows flowers to have a florist shop on their land without having to meet other normal requirements that a stand-alone business would have to (extra curb cut, parking, lighting)

So it encourages people to use their land - and any one who uses their land in this way - can't help but be a better steward ... or so I think.

Funny - claiming talking politics - I equate that with repub or dem ... but I don't even know what the other planning commissioners are ! and we have worked together for years now ... it has never been political with my group - just looking at how to use and steward the land for everyone - not just a few.

We are zoned "agricultural restricted" or AR. That means I can't sell what I don't produce on my property. SO if I did have sheep I could sell wool. Baa, baa.

I am thinking of selling currants if I can ever get these things producing a decent crop. Even with four bushes I hope to get more than I need. I hate driving all the way to B-ville and paying $3-4 a pound. Might be more now.

You both state rubber "pans"- can you post a pic? I have the rubber bowls already and I'm thinking that's something different that what you guys are talking about...

Nvrmnd, I just googled, and the ones I have are considered to be "pans" lol. I'll just use those!

Fortex is the brand. $6.99 2 gallons. I don't put water in the coops only in the runs or under the shelter of the hoops. Most days they stay liquid most of the day. I do go out to break the ice during the day when I check on the chickens. You can get them at Tractor Supply.

Mine freeze rock solid since they're usually just sitting on a bed of straw. I just take my rubber mallet and smack the sides and the ice breaks pretty easily. Most days.

Yesterday I finally set up the heated water dish, stretching out the extension cord, but later in the day there was a little ice on top. Will see this morning very soon! May try it on the cement blocks like it was last year, but maybe they have a life that is short. Mine is the blue one with the cord protected by wire...Is that what you have, Gramma?

Maybe some leftover oatmeal for the feathered ones...too bad they don't drink coffee, that always helps me.
This was my chickies treat before bed yesterday .Warm Oatmeal with apples ...I didnt add the Cinnamon ..LOL:

I tore one apart last year they are made quite cheaply .. I found a huge one at TSC for 21.00

I wonder if a crock pot would work? I was just thinking that might work for giving them warm mush during the day.

My big, huge, Pioneer/Dixie Rainbow Roo is somehow able to get up on the roost no problem but is a big chicken when getting down--he's the last one to try getting down in the morning. He's gotten a little spoiled and now waits for me to carry him down off the roost!
YOur Roost may be too high ...? I read somewhere the roost shouldnt be any higher than 18 inches ..higher ones there is more chance of a chicken being injured

I can't believe I haven't named the chickens, to be honest with you!!! Pretty proud of myself that I've actually been treating them like chickens!!!

I have found the more chickens you have / esp of the same kind... the less likely you are to name them .
I got 5 white rocks in the spring ...impossible to tell apart I just named them the Quads

Ive used rubber pans, easy to nock ice out, but depending on how often you refill it, the girls can get really thirsty!

Mine were thirsty when I got home this eve ...I gave them water earlier but it froze up ..they were all interested in the new dish ...
Trying to drink out of it before I even put in the water ..they knew what the blue dish was for .

Glad you could use my idea ...thats why I share

it just stops it from freezing ..it doesnt make the water hot

Even if it was set on low? I mean it would be nice to give them some warm mash in the morning for breakfast. Of course then they'd probably want a cup of coffee/tea to go with it and some toast or muffins and jam.

They can be very demanding. Especially the English and Australian breeds.

I wonder if DW would get mad if I gave a try with her crock pot? Probably would huh?

Anyhow if it got too hot you could just toss a bird in and make stew.
