NY chicken lover!!!!

Am happy and chagrined to report that my blue dog bowl is working well now. An I starred vacantly at the coop and run it came to me that the extension cord was stilled coiled up. I plugged in a different line, and all the fussing with that orange cord was at the coop end. So I plugged the orange line in to the house, and Voila! Let. There be warm water. Was so inspired that I set up the rope lights, and they were on this morning! Life is good. That was a blond moment for sure.

I've run heavy duty cords to the coop and have white christmas lights around my garden and in the chicken runs. I do have some colored lights along the fence. I'll be saving money for the after christmas sales. They can last pretty long depending on the kind. If you get them for $1 or 2. It's worth it. It makes it nice to take an evening stroll or in the middle of the night when you can't sleep.

I'm happy to report that my Olive egger is back to laying.

Is anyone heating their coop tonight here in NYS? This is my first winter with chickens and I'm so afraid they'll be too cold!!! Water has a glaze of ice inside the coop tonight--I smacked it out and put fresh in.
I have a heat lamp set up, but have been virtually smacked by everyone on here when I think about turning it on!! I don't want to be a big suburban sissy in turning it on (these are the only outdoor animals I've ever owned in 37 years!!).

Supposed to get down to the teens tonight.

Sarah

As long as there aren't any draughts in the coop, plenty of bedding, they will do just fine. Last year the temp here got to -14F - the girls did just fine. They grumbled of course, but they always do

Just keep an eye on combs & wattles to make sure they don't get frostbitten,

Anyone going to the NEPC in Springfield, Ma in January? I"m looking for Toulouse goose pair and a Pekin pair or trio.
